India’s Bumrah stars as England’s Broad concedes costliest over in Test history

India
  • Jasprit Bumrahm hits Stuart Broad for 29 runs in an over that also features five wides and a no-ball.
  • India all out for 416 in first innings of fifth Test at Edgbaston.
  • England slump to 84-5 at stumps on day one, facing a deficit of 332 runs.

India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah starred with both bat and ball as England’s Stuart Broad conceded the most expensive over in Test history, giving up 35 runs at Edgbaston on Saturday.

India were all out for a breathtaking 416 in their first innings of the Covid-delayed fifth Test, with the tourists 2-1 up in a five-match series.

Bumrah, who hit Broad for 29 runs in an over that also featured five wides and a no-ball he struck for six, then led from the front in his primary role of strike bowler.

He took the first three wickets to fall amid several rain breaks during an excellent return of 3-35 in 11 overs, with England slumping to 84-5 at stumps — a deficit of 332 runs.

When play resumed in bright sunshine, the in-form pair of former England captain Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow briefly kept India at bay.

But the Yorkshire duo were separated when Root, the world’s top-ranked Test batsman, was caught behind for 31 trying to cut a Mohammad Siraj delivery that was too close to him.

At 78-4, for all their aggressive play under a new leadership duo of captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum in a 3-0 whitewash of Test world champions New Zealand, England now sent in Jack Leach as a nightwatchman.

Leach, however, was out for a five-ball duck when caught behind off Mohammad Shami, with Bairstow 12 not out and skipper Stokes unbeaten on nought at stumps.

Broad had become just the sixth bowler to take 550 Test wickets when he lost his composure by repeatedly bowling too short at Bumrah, deputising as captain for the Covid-hit Rohit Sharma.

But the tailender, who had responded to a similar England bouncer barrage by smashing an unbeaten 34 during India’s 151-run win in the second Test at Lord’s last year, was anything but intimidated.

Bumrah batting at No. 10 and facing the new ball, dismantled Broad’s figures during eight remarkable deliveries. The six legitimate balls were thrashed for 23 runs, including four fours and a six.

Broad, 36, also sent down a wide that sailed over the head of wicketkeeper Sam Billings for four and a no-ball Bumrah top-edged for six.

The previous record of 28 runs in a Test over had been achieved on three occasions in the format’s 145-year history, with Broad’s team-mates James Anderson and Root two of the bowlers on the receiving end.

Broad did not get a chance to make amends with the ball, although he did end the innings by catching last man Siraj.

Ton-up Jadeja

India, 338-7 overnight, smashed 78 runs in 11.5 overs.

Stokes set the tone for what followed with a ragged opening spell as Ravindra Jadeja, resuming on 83 not out, completed the third century of his 60-Test career and first overseas.

Jadeja had been the junior partner in a stand of 222 with Rishabh Pant, who hit a rapid 146, that rescued India from the depths of 98-5 after they had been sent into bat.

Matthew Potts could have had Jadeja out for 92 but a thick edge off the shoulder of the bat split slips Zak Crawley and Root before heading to the boundary.

But one ball after his reprieve, he commandingly cut Potts for four to complete a 183-ball century including 13 boundaries.

Broad then achieved his landmark wicket when Leach caught Shami.

Anderson bowled Jadeja for 104 and then ended the innings when Siraj holed out to finish with 5-60 in 21.5 overs.

Bumrah followed his 31 not out by bowling opener Alex Lees between bat and pad for six, with fellow opener Crawley’s poor run of form continuing when he nicked the captain to third slip on nine.

Bumrah completed his removal of England’s top three when Ollie Pope exited for 10 when an edged drive was caught in the slips by Shreyas Iyer at the second attempt.

This decider should have been played in Manchester last September only to be postponed just hours before the start because of coronavirus concerns within the India camp.

Uzbekistan U-turn on constitution after rare protest

Uzbekistan
  • President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Karakalpakstan after rare protests over constitutional reform proposals.
  • Proposals would have removed autonomous republic’s right to self-determination and brought it further under central control.
  • Uzbekistan’s neighbour Kazakhstan has barred the passage of “people, vehicles and goods” through its border with Uzbekistan.

The president of Uzbekistan arrived in a protest-rocked autonomous republic on Saturday and promised that proposed constitutional amendments that would have weakened the territory’s status would be scrapped.

Authorities earlier said on Saturday that they had arrested “mass riot organisers” who wanted to seize administrative buildings in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, which saw rare protests over constitutional reform proposals.

A Friday demonstration brought thousands onto the streets of the regional capital and followed the publication of draft amendments to the Uzbek constitution that would have removed the republic’s right to self-determination and brought it further under central control.

The tightly controlled government has made no mention of casualties, although Telegram accounts have circulated footage that suggests fatalities occurred during the police crackdown.

Internet access has been restricted in the territory during the last week and at least one private media outlet deleted an article about the changes to Karakalpakstan’s status shortly after publishing it.

Spontaneous demonstrations are illegal in the authoritarian ex-Soviet republic and police said Friday that “order had been restored” in the area taken over by the protest.

Nevertheless, the demonstration marked arguably the biggest challenge yet to the rule of authoritarian President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The Uzbek leader styles himself as a reformer but has seen the economic opening of his reign undermined by successive global crises — the coronavirus pandemic and key trade partner Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Mirziyoyev’s press service on Saturday said he had held a meeting with lawmakers of Karakalpakstan’s parliament and that the articles of the constitution concerning the region would remain unchanged “on the basis of… the opinions stated by residents of Karakalpakstan”.

The proposed changes that had angered residents included one that removed the republic’s constitutional right to secede from Uzbekistan via referendum.

The article dates back to 1993 after the republic’s leadership made a push for greater separation from Uzbekistan on the eve of the fall of the Soviet Union.

Derby’s future secured by David Clowes takeover

David Clowes
  • Derby City’s future secured after local property developer David Clowes completes takeover.
  • The Rams have been in administration since September of last year.
  • American businessman Chris Kirchner withdrew his offer to purchase the club last week.

Derby City’s future has been secured after local property developer David Clowes completed his takeover of the struggling League One club on Friday.

The Rams have been in administration since September of last year, and fears that they will go bankrupt grew last week when American businessman Chris Kirchner withdrew his offer to purchase the club.

Derby, whose debts have been reported to be in the region of £60 million ($72 million), were docked a combined 21 points last season after entering administration and admitting breaches of Football League financial regulations.

They were relegated in April and will compete in English football’s third-tier for the first time since 1986.

Former Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney quit as manager last week as the uncertainty over a new owner dragged on.

But advisory firm Quantuma have confirmed the deal with Clowes Developments has been finalised, allowing Derby to exit administration in time for the 2022-23 season, which starts on July 30.

“Quantuma joint administrators, Andrew Hosking, Carl Jackson and Andrew Andronikou are delighted to confirm the completion of the sale of the business and assets of Derby County Football Club (“The Club”) to Derbyshire based property group, Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd (“Clowes”) for an undisclosed amount,” Quantuma said in a statement.

“The transaction sees the Club exit from administration and be brought under the same ownership structure as its stadium, Pride Park.”

On Sunday, Quantuma announced that it had formally accepted Clowes’ bid, which had already agreed to purchase Pride Park and provide the club with an interim loan.

Android spyware can sign up for premium services without notifying users

Android Spyware
  • Spyware that can sign you up for a premium subscription without your knowledge is becoming more common.
  • Malware-containing apps are typically categorized as “toll frauds” and use “dynamic code loading” to execute the attack.
  • Some virus variants disable your Wi-Fi or just wait till you leave the range.

According to Microsoft’s 365 Defender Team, spyware that can sign you up for a premium subscription without your knowledge is becoming more and more common.

However, the attack is rather complex, and the malware must complete a number of steps.

To begin with, the malware-containing apps are typically categorized as “toll frauds” and use “dynamic code loading” to execute the attack.

In essence, spyware uses your monthly telecom bill to sign you up for a premium service. Then you are made to pay.

The so-called WAP (wireless application protocol), used by cellular networks, is the only method through which the malware functions.

Because of this, some virus variants disable your Wi-Fi or just wait till you leave the range of your Wi-Fi. This is where the dynamic code loading stated before comes into play.

After reading an OTP (one-time-password) you might have received before subscribing, the malicious program reads it, fills out the OTP form on your behalf, and also hides the message to mask its tracks.

The good news is that because Google limits the usage of dynamic code loading by apps, the malware is primarily disseminated outside of Google Play.

Therefore, use caution and refrain from side-loading Android apps.
