Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer and actor. Dubbed the “King of Rock and Roll”, he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century.
Grease Features a reference to Elvis Presley, filmed on the day he died. The producers’ original choice for an iconic role in the John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John classic was the King of Rock and Roll, but he turned it down, unaware that the Hollywood smash would go on to become one of the most successful musicals of all time.
Grease, and especially Travolta’s Danny, is full of homages to The King’s style and song, but it also has several all-girl moments. Rizzo’s sarcastic wit is scattered throughout the legendary Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee moment in Grease would not be complete without his sarcastic wit. When the Pink Lady leader, played by Stockard Channing, calls out Elvis Presley, it is one of the most well-known lines in the song.
As she sings, she makes a humorous reference to the King of Rock and Roll: “Allow me to be, Elvis. Please keep your pelvis away from me.” Later, while they filmed the scene, the cast confessed their horror, and sad news spread around the world. Even more distressing, Elvis’ name had been substituted for another great star who had died in the song.
Kleiser said: “It was very eerie. It was all over the news, so everyone knew. We did this number, and everybody kind of looked at each other like: ‘Yeah, this is creepy.'”
