Speaking about the joke Prince Philip played at family lunches, Prince William said: “Instead of like a mustard pot we’d have a mustard tube, a squeezy mustard tube.

“And then he’d squish your hands together to fire the mustard onto the ceiling,” he said.

He continued: “He used to get in a lot of trouble from my grandmother for covering most of the places we had lunch and things with mustard on the ceiling.”

Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, the Duke’s older grandchildren, also remembered the sloppy mustard game.

Zara said: “I can’t remember exactly what he says but he ends up slamming your hands together…. It goes all over the ceiling.”

Peter added: “I actually think the marks are still there.”

The Queen has shown she isn’t one to back down from a joke on several occasions, proving she isn’t the only royal with a sharp sense of humour.

Prince Andrew sparks outrage with his rumoured plans to attend more engagements with the Queen

Prince Andrew

Prince Andrew is said to be in talks to join the Queen to the Epsom Derby on Platinum Jubilee weekend, and a source believes the Duke “doesn’t comprehend” the “public outrage” that surrounded his last public visit.

The Duke of York accompanied the Queen, 95, at the 73-year-old Prince Philip’s memorial service last week. The queen was seen holding Andrew’s arm while also gripping a walking stick, while the mother and son arrived together and utilised a separate entrance from the other royals.

Andrew made his first public appearance since his civil dispute with his accuser Virginia Giuffre was settled out of court. He has categorically denied all allegations levelled against him.

Following their participation at the event, the Duke of York is expected to accompany his mother to the Epsom horse meet in June.

The Duke, however, “doesn’t seem to comprehend the popular anger” over his participation at the memorial, according to a source.

A source said: “He was meant to stay invisible during the Platinum Jubilee so there is no way he will be at events like Trooping the Colour.”

“But the Queen needs a chaperone on all occasions at the moment due to her mobility issues and Andrew has earmarked the Derby as the one he will accompany her at. He just doesn’t seem to understand the public outcry.”

Commentators and the general public had conflicting reactions to the Duke’s presence at the event.

Judi James, a body language expert, claimed that his position as the monarch’s right-hand man saw him shadow Prince Philip’s role as consort, while Vanity Fair’s Royal Editor Katie Nicholl believes the move signifies the monarch’s desire to be more involved in the public eye “He believes he is not guilty. She expressed her point emphatically “.
