Copa America: Messi’s Argentina will face Neymar’s Brazil in the final

Copa America

Lionel Messi will look to break his international title drought as the Argentine captain prepares to face Brazil in the Copa America Final.

Argentina will face Brazil in the much-anticipated final at Rio de Janeiro’s famous Maracana Stadium, one of football’s spiritual homes, on Sunday, and it could be Lionel Messi’s last chance to win an international trophy.

Due to health regulations, the final will be played in an empty Maracana.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner will be looking to win a major title with his country for the first time since 1993. Messi appeared in the 2007 and 2015 Copa America finals, as well as the 2014 World Cup final, which he lost to Germany at the Maracana.

“What I want the most is to win a title with the national team,” said the Argentina captain after Tuesday’s 3-2 penalty shootout victory against Colombia in the semifinal.

“We aim high, we managed to get the first objective, which was to play the final, play every match. Now we aim higher than ever,” he added.

Messi and Neymar are close friends after winning the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015. When the Catalan giants defeated Brazil’s Santos 4-0 in the Club World Cup final in 2011, they were on different sides.

Only two weeks before the start of the Copa America, Brazil was named host. It will be a fitting conclusion to a tournament marred by misfortunes and relocated at the last minute to one of the countries hardest struck by Covid-19.

Due to injuries, Neymar was ruled out of the 2019 Copa America. After Brazil’s 1-0 triumph over Peru on Monday, he stated that he wanted to play Argentina in the final.

“But Brazil wins the final,” Neymar jokingly said. After Argentina and Colombia were eliminated as co-hosts, he was one of the players who voiced his displeasure with the late decision to hold the tournament in his country.

Argentina was a major favorite to win the 2007 Copa America, but a 3-0 triumph by Brazil in the final ended Messi’s ambitions.

In the previous Copa, Brazil defeated Argentina. Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino scored in the semifinal to give the team a 2-0 win.

According to a new survey by Turkish crypto exchange Paribu (a Turkish cryptocurrency exchange website), Turkey’s cryptocurrency userbase has increased by more than 11 times in the previous year.

The “Cryptocurrency Awareness and Perception Survey 2021” was conducted by Akademetre Research, revealing the perceptions and behaviors of Turkish citizens toward Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies. The first such survey was completed in 2020.

On top of that, 84% of respondents had never heard of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies before. These results have contrasted with previous reports that claimed one-fifth of the Turkish population was exposed to cryptocurrency.

This year, the survey shows a substantial jump in terms of cryptocurrency usage in Turkey. Out of 1,400 respondents, 7.7% said they traded with Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, marking an 11-times jump in crypto users compared to last year.

According to the survey, 11% of respondents with crypto knowledge have become active cryptocurrency users. As a major cryptocurrency exchange in the country, Paribu reflects the adoption speed with its user count, which grew from 600,000 to over 4 million within a year.

Argentina employees to receive salaries in Bitcoin (BTC) payments

Argentina

Argentina: A law introduced by Congressman José Luis Ramón will allow companies to pay their employees in Bitcoin (BTC/USD).

According to the proposed bill, the service exporters and other employees will be able to get their salaries and benefits in Bitcoin, either in part or in full.

The law will not be mandatory for everyone, but it will be for those who seek to receive Bitcoin payments.

Ramon says that the main goal of the proposal is to strengthen the economy of Argentina and “preserve the purchasing power of their remuneration.”

The peso, Argentina’s national currency, has been experiencing annual inflation of over 50%.

Furthermore, the government has been developing initiatives to reduce the high rate.

According to Ramon, the current Bitcoin initiative is the result of such needs.

He claims that there is a strong desire to promote greater autonomy without jeopardizing the situation or implying a loss of rights.

Pakistan Vs England 1st ODI: England wins by 9 Wickets

England tour to Pakistan in worries due to players security concerns

Pakistan Vs England: England registered a clinical win by thumping Pakistan in the first game of the series. Everything went well for them right from the beginning.

Saqib Mahmood set the tone by striking twice in the first over of the match and from thereon, it was all England.

Pakistan failed to recover from those blows and was always playing catch-up. Fakhar Zaman did give them some hope with his fine strokes but he didn’t last long and the touring team managed only a paltry total of 141 on the board.

Pakistan needed a miracle from their bowlers but that didn’t happen. They bowled too many extra upfront and managed to pick the solitary wicket of Phillip Salt.

Playing the role of an opener, Dawid Malan showed good hands and along with debutant Zak Crawley, he formed a century stand. Their partnership didn’t allow any sniff to Pakistan as England cruised to a commanding win.

Pakistan Vs England 1st ODI: 100 up for Three Lions

Pakistan Vs England

Pakistan Vs England: England opening batsman Dawid Malan and Philip Salt started England’s chase after finishing Pakistan’s innings on 141.

Score: 100/1 (16.0)

While the measly 142-run target may not provide a challenge to England, it appears that Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has intended to give the hosts a hard time, as he has taken the team’s first wicket.

Phil Salt, who was caught in the slips and contributed seven runs to the chase, was dismissed by Afridi.

Pakistan was hoping for a miracle but that didn’t happen and they are just going through the motions, probably waiting for the game to end.

DP World agrees to buy Imperial Logistics for $890 million

DP World

KARACHI: DP World has entered into a transaction implementation agreement to acquire all outstanding shares of Imperial Logistics at a cash offer of ZA66/share, implying an equity consideration of ZAR12.7 billion ($890 million), a statement said on Thursday.

This offer represents a premium of 39.5 per cent to the Imperial’s share price as of July 7, 2021 and a 34.2 per cent premium to the 30-day volume weighted average price.

“This transaction is subject to Imperial shareholder approval and other customary completion conditions, including regulatory approvals. It is expected to close in 4Q 2021 or 1Q 2022,” it added.

Imperial is an integrated logistics and market access solutions provider with a presence across 25 countries, including a significant footprint in the high growth African market.

The group focuses on key fast-growing industries, which include healthcare, consumer, automotive, chemicals, industrial and commodities.

Imperial’s business has been built on longstanding partnerships with beneficial cargo owners with key relationships averaging more than 15 years, in addition to serving as a trusted partner to many multinational clients, principals, and customers, the statement said.

It provides two key solutions, market access and integrated logistics. The market access offers cargo owners faster access to end-consumers through complex route-to-market solutions, while integrated logistics delivers efficient end-to-end supply chain solutions, including lead logistics, contract logistics, and road freight and air and ocean freight management.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman of the group and chief executive officer of DP World, said: “We are excited to announce the acquisition of Imperial, which will add significant strategic value to DP World given its attractive footprint and strong logistics solutions capability.”

“Imperial has a market leading presence in Africa, a market where trade is expected to grow at more than 2x GDP driven by population growth, accelerated urbanisation and rising middle classes.”

He also said: “Imperial’s business strongly complements DP World’s existing footprint in Africa and Europe and will allow DP World to deliver a fully integrated end-to-end solution to cargo owners across a wider market.”

“This acquisition will be DP World’s most significant investment on the African continent, which, despite the challenging global and domestic economic environment, demonstrates our long-term confidence in the South African economy and the wider regional market,” he said.

“Further, DP World has a proven track record of contributing to the sustainability and development of the economies in which it operates.”

“Imperial also adds new capabilities and strong long-term relationships with cargo owners, which further enhances DP World’s infrastructure-led supply chain solutions offering. By leveraging our best-in-class infrastructure across inland logistics, ports and terminals, economic zones and marine logistics network, DP World aims at removing inefficiencies and providing improved connectivity in fast growing trade lanes such as Asia, the Middle East and Africa,” Bin Sulayem added.

“DP World aims at building on Imperial’s platform and accelerate its existing transformation strategy to deliver greater scale and provide compelling value-added supply chain solutions to cargo owners across a wider market, which will drive returns and value for all DP World stakeholders,” the DP World CEO said.

“The acquisition will be funded from the existing available resources. DP World continues to make positive progress on its capital recycling programmes and remains fully committed to its leverage target of below 4.0x Net Debt/EBITDA by the end of 2022,” he added.

Mohammed Akoojee, Group CEO of Imperial Logistics, said: “This transaction will be value-enhancing for Imperial as our business will benefit from DP World’s leading technology, global networks and key trade-lane volumes, while enabling us to build on our ‘Gateway to Africa’ strategic and growth ambitions.”

“Our logistics international business and operations are also aligned with DP World’s strategic expansion plans on the European continent. Combining DP World’s world-class infrastructure, specifically its investment and expertise in ports on the African and European continents, with Imperial’s logistics and market access platforms will enable us to offer integrated end-to-end solutions along key trade lanes into and out of Africa and accelerate our position in Europe, driving greater supply chain efficiencies and ultimately enhancing value for all stakeholders.”

Competition Commission of Pakistan conducts search operation at PVMA offices

CCP

ISLAMABAD: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) on Thursday carried out a search and inspection of the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) office located in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, a statement said.

The operation was conducted after alleged violations of Sections 3 and 4 of the Competition Act, 2010 in the edible oil and ghee sector, it added.

The commission impounded documents and computer-stored information relating to the suspected role of the association in anti-competitive activities. Three different teams of authorised officers entered and searched the premises of PVMA, and seized important information.

The Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association officials fully cooperated with the search teams and handed over the required documents and computer-stored information after signing the inventory details, it said.

During the investigation, the CCP’s inquiry committee observed that PVMA is an association of 125 edible oil and ghee manufacturers, and as per the media reports, it seems that they are involved in collective price-fixing of retail prices of various brands of cooking oil and ghee for different market segments.

Data available with the inquiry committee also indicates that PVMA circulates freight charges among its member mills/companies and frequently revises these charges as a result of an increase/decrease in the prices of high-speed diesel.

Such deliberations at the level of the association appear to be a prima facie, contravention of Section 4 of Competition Act, 2010, the commission said.

It appears from the suspected anti-competitive behaviour of PVMA that its platform is being used for taking collective business decisions with respect to the prices of oil/ghee and its cost components. The Competition Act prohibits such business practices, the statement said.

The impounded record with the inquiry committee may provide evidence/proof of the possible role of the association and other undertakings in the recent hike in prices of edible oil and ghee.

The CCP is mandated to ensure free competition in all spheres of commercial and economic activities to enhance economic efficiency, and to protect consumers from anti-competitive behaviour, including price-fixing of essential commodities, it added.
