Man who slapped Macron gets four-month jail sentence

France accuses Australia and US of ‘lying’ over cancelled submarine contract

Damien Tarel, the man who slapped Macron in the face has been sentenced to four months in prison by a French court.

The 28-year-old man was quickly arrested after slapping the French President on Tuesday.

After the incident, Tarel acknowledged hitting the president with a “rather violent” slap. “When I saw his friendly, lying look, I felt disgusted, and I had a violent reaction,” he told the court. “It was an impulsive reaction … I was surprised myself by the violence.”

He insisted that the slap was not premeditated and that he and his friends had considered bringing a cream pie or an egg to throw at the French leader.

“I think that Emmanuel Macron represents the decline of our country,” he said, without explaining what he meant.

A second suspect who recorded the incident is facing prosecution for illegal possession of weapons after local authorities searched his home. He comes from the same town as Damien Tarel.

Macron did not comment on the trial but said: “Nothing justifies violence in a democratic society, never.”

“It’s not such a big deal to get a slap when you go toward a crowd to say hello to some people who were waiting for a long time,” he said in an interview with broadcaster BFM-TV. “We must not make that stupid and violent act more important than it is.”

The French president further added, “We must not make it banal, because anyone with public authority is entitled to respect.”

Mufti Sardar Ali Haqqani, a religious leader, was arrested by KP police on Wednesday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s district of Lakki Marwat after a video of him allegedly threatening to kill the noble laureate went viral on social media.

In the video, Haqqani threatens to target Malala with a suicide attack when she comes back to Pakistan, allegedly because of her recent comments to Vogue magazine about marriage that he claims insulted him.

In the interview with the British Vogue magazine, when asked about her view on marriage, Malala had said, “I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?”

Mufti Sardar Ali Haqqani was arrested after an FIR was registered against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act. KP Police Office confirmed that the arrest had taken place on Wednesday.

The complainant in the case is SHO Wasim Sajjad Khan.

The FIR said that Haqqani was also armed when the arrest took place. The FIR quoted him saying “When Malala comes to Pakistan I will be the first to attempt a suicide attack on her,”

Malala’s father, Ziauddin Yousafzai defended his daughter on Twitter saying that her remarks were taken out of context.

Yuvraj Singh opened up about his desire to become Team India captain

Yuvraj Singh

“I was expecting to captain India but then MS Dhoni’s name was announced,” says Yuvraj Singh.

The all-rounder opened up about his earlier desire to captain India. Speaking during a podcast, Yuvraj Singh also revealed why many senior cricketers didn’t play in the 2007 T20 World Cup.

Due to his multiple match-winning performances for the country, Yuvraj Singh is considered to be one of the greatest cricketers from India. The left-hander was a fan favorite and many fans expected him to become the national team captain.

But the explosive left-hander was overlooked by the cricket board for the role of captaincy, and it was given to MS Dhoni.

Yuvraj stated in the 22 Yarns podcast that he expected to captain his national team in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup before Dhoni was named captain.

“So probably the seniors thought that they need a break and obviously nobody took the T20 World Cup seriously. I was expecting to captain India in the T20 World Cup and then it was announced MS Dhoni will be the captain,” he said.

When asked if his relationship with Dhoni survived the issue, Yuvraj stated, “Obviously. Whoever becomes captain you got to support the guy whether it was Rahul, whether it was Sourav Ganguly, whoever in the future. End of the day you want to be a team man and that’s how I was.”

Yuvraj played a crucial role in winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, helping his national team win the inaugural tournament.
