China Hits Alibaba Group with a record Fine of $2.8 Billion

Alibaba Group fined by Chinese

Renowned tech titan Alibaba Group has been slapped a record $2.8 billion fine by China after it found abusing its powerful market status for many years.

According to regulators in China, Alibaba had abused its dominant market position for several years.

However, in a statement, the company said it affirmed the ruling and would “ensure its compliance”.

Alibaba used its platform rules and technical methods “to maintain and strengthen its own market power and obtain an improper competitive advantage,” the State Administration for Market Regulation reasoned in its investigation.

“The high fine puts the regulator in the media spotlight and sends a strong signal to the tech sector that such types of exclusionary conduct will no longer be tolerated,” said the director of Centre for Chinese Law at the University of Hong Kong.

“It’s a stone that kills two birds,” she added.

According to the statement, “Alibaba’s practice of imposing a pick one from two choices on merchants shuts out and restricts competition in the domestic online retail market.”

Earlier, a strategic partnership had been announced between Saudi Telecom Company (STC) and Alibaba Cloud, a major technology company in China.

Under the partnership, the Chinese company would have offer high-performance computing services in Saudi Arabia.

In addition, the Saudi capital, Riyadh, would be the regional centre for the Chinese group’s administrative and training affairs.

Mureed Abbas Murder Case: Court To Record Statements of eyewitnesses On April 29

Mureed Abbas Murder Case

The additional district and session judge South has adjourned the case hearing of BOL News’ anchor Mureed Abbas till April 29.

The court has on Saturday directed to fix the schedule of recording the statements of the eyewitnesses in the next hearing in Mureed Abbas’s murder case.

Three eyewitnesses namely Umar Rehan, Osama and Ilyas in the murder case of the anchor presented before the court today.

The police also presented the accused Atif Zaman in court while his counsel did not appear there.

Earlier, the Supreme Court (SC) had cancelled the bail of Adil Zaman, a suspect in Mureed Abbas murder case, and ordered his re-arrest. The suspect fled the court’s Karachi Registry after the verdict was announced.

Adil is the brother of Atif Zaman, the man accused of killing anchor Abbas. The Sindh High Court’s order releasing him on bail had been cancelled.

The court had ordered the police to re-arrest him and send him to jail.

The high court did not take into account important evidence when approving his bail, the top court noted. Four witnesses and evidence against him proves he was there at the time of the murder, it said.

Previously, on July 9, 2019, Atif gunned down BOL News Anchor Mureed Abbas and Khizar Hayat over a monetary dispute in Defence Housing Authority (DHA).

An anti-terrorism court had on September 30 dropped terrorism charges in the case and had sent the case back to a session’s court to conduct the trial of accused Atif Zaman on charges of killing his two business partners.

Atif Zaman also sought pardon from Mureed Abbas’s wife Zara Abbas while appearing before the court.
