Hong Kong opens 19 restaurants as catering sector struggling amidst pandemic

Hong Kong restaurants

Hong Kong authorities on Thursday opened around 19 community centres and restaurants to eat inside after a virus-induced ban on indoor dining at restaurants forced many workers to have their meals outside on pavements under sweltering heat and rain.

The restaurant ban in Hong Kong barred any outlet from allowing dine-in patrons to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Construction and office workers were seen across the city trying to find shade as they ate their noodle and rice lunch boxes in temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius.

Others opted to eat inside storerooms or even toilets, the public broadcaster said.

In a prompt reversal, the government said on Thursday it would partly relax its ban on restaurant dining, noting that it brought “inconvenience and difficulties” to many workers.

Emmy Awards 2020: Ceremony to be held online, reports

Emmy Awards 2020

The Television Academy, a day after announcing Emmy Awards nominations, has informed that the ceremony in September will be held online to avoid the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

The Emmy Awards will take place on September 20 and will be the first major awards show in Hollywood since the coronavirus crisis.

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the ceremony broadcast on ABC.

According to organizers, they were forced to make the tough decision to hold the ceremony online given the circumstances.

“Aside from NOT being able to come together in one place, we also acknowledge that our world is going through a challenging moment in many ways,” according to the letter signed by the producers of the event and Kimmel.

“We’ll be producing an event that is filled with warmth and humanity, which celebrates the power of television to bring us together and to help us shape our world,” they wrote.

The letter said that organizers would work closely with the nominees, filming them at home and other locations, to ensure they stand out on the big night.

“We’re going to make you look fabulous — we’re exploring the cutting edge of technology to allow us to use good cameras and lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique ‘on-screen’ moments,” the letter added.

As to the dress code, the letter said given the informal theme of the ceremony, nominees could decide what to wear.

“If you want to be in formal wear, we’d love that, but equally if you’re in the UK and it’s 3 a.m., perhaps you want to be in designer pajamas and record from your bed!” the letter said.

“We want to work with you to style your moments, but want you to guide us on your levels of comfort — where you want to be, who you want to be with, what you want to wear, etc.”

US to withdraw nearly 12,000 American troops from Germany

US to withdraw troops from Germany

The United States (US) has said it was withdrawing 12,000 American troops from Germany in a move which President Donald Trump described specifically to punish Germany for “not paying the bills” for the defence of Europe.

The Pentagon on Wednesday called the move to withdraw American troops “strategic” repositioning, but Trump said was to punish Berlin for its weak defence spending.

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that the Pentagon will be sending home about 6,400 of its military personnel in Germany, and move nearly 5,600 to other NATO countries, including Italy and Belgium.

Some could also be relocated to Poland and the Baltic countries if Washington can reach agreements with them, he said.

The move, which will cost the US government several billion dollars, will cut the presence of US military personnel in Germany to around 24,000.

Esper stressed that the action is part of his broader plan to reposition US military forces globally to better address the key threats from Russia and China.
