Severe flooding in Sialkot claims 26 lives; Flight operations suspended at Sialkot International Airport

Severe flooding in Sialkot claims 26 lives; Flight operations suspended at Sialkot International Airport

Sialkot: A severe flood struck Sialkot and surrounding areas yesterday, causing widespread destruction at eight different locations and claiming the lives of 26 people.

The floodwaters of Nala Plakho swept away two individuals, while the breach of the Chenab river embankment led to the drowning of six people in Majra Kalan. Among the victims in Majra Kalan was a single family, including a couple and their children, who tragically lost their lives in the flood.

In Dogranwala, two youths drowned in the floodwaters of the nala, and one person died due to electric current in the floodwaters at Askari Town. Shani, who had gone to rescue relatives in Majra Kalan, also fell victim to the raging waters.

Due to the intensity of the flooding, flight operations at Sialkot International Airport have been temporarily suspended. The airport spokesperson issued an official NOTAM stating that flight operations will remain closed from 10 AM to 10 PM until the floodwaters are fully drained.

Sialkot administration has mobilized all available personnel and machinery to tackle the situation. Dewatering pumps and other resources are being used to ensure the timely removal of floodwater. The main terminal building, parking area, and runway of Sialkot Airport remain safe; however, floodwaters have breached the protective embankment on the southern side of the airport and entered the premises.

U.S. kicks off 50% tariff on India over Russian oil purchases

U.S. kicks off 50% tariff on India over Russian oil purchases

Washington: The United States has officially imposed a 50% import tariff on Indian goods, marking a strong economic response by the Trump administration against what it has called India’s “double standards.”

According to a statement issued by the White House, India’s continued purchase of discounted oil from Russia not only violates global sanctions but also financially supports Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump made it clear that countries buying oil from Russia will face consequences, reaffirming America’s firm stance on the matter.

He criticized nations like India, which on one hand claim close ties with the U.S. while on the other continue to support Russia indirectly. “They must now pay the price for their double-dealing policies,” he said.

Flood devastation in Punjab: Villages submerged, Millions displaced, 7 dead

Flood devastation in Punjab: Villages submerged, Millions displaced, 7 dead

Lahore: Widespread destruction has been caused in Punjab due to severe flooding in the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers, following the release of water from India. Several villages have been submerged, with millions displaced, seven people confirmed dead, and three reported missing.

High Alert as Rivers Swell Beyond Capacity:

The River Ravi is witnessing high-level flooding at Shahdara, with a water flow of 145,160 cusecs, expected to rise to 160,000 cusecs. Although this remains below the river’s total capacity of 250,000 cusecs, authorities remain on high alert. At Jassar, the water flow has started to decrease slightly, now recorded at 152,000 cusecs.

The River Chenab has also begun to show slight signs of relief. At Head Khanki, water flow has reduced from 1.05 million cusecs to 859,000 cusecs, and at Head Qadirabad, it stands at 996,000 cusecs—still a dangerously high level.

Meanwhile, the Sutlej River is experiencing unusual and severe flooding. At Ganda Singh Wala, the river is flowing at 261,000 cusecs. Head Marala is also reporting high flood levels of 191,000 cusecs. Medium-level flooding is ongoing at Balloki and Sulemanki.

In Gujranwala Division, seven deaths have been confirmed: three in Gujrat, two in Sialkot, and one each in Narowal and Gujranwala. Additionally, three people are missing in Sambrial (Sialkot), feared swept away by the rising waters.

Several villages in Narowal have been completely submerged, destroying thousands of acres of crops. The Shakargarh–Narowal road is now underwater, and railway service through Qila Ahmadabad has been suspended due to track damage.

At Kot Nainan in Shakargarh, the Ravi River is at extreme flood levels, sweeping away roads and bridges, isolating many communities.

Widespread Damage Across the Province:

Floodwaters have reached dangerously close to the GT Road in suburban Sahiwal due to river erosion. In Wazirabad, the Palkhu Nala has overflowed, inundating several low-lying villages.

In Hafizabad’s village Sajjadah, floodwaters destroyed a key bridge, while in Gujranwala, 4–5 acres of agricultural land are submerged, forcing residents to flee on their own as rescue teams struggle to reach them.

Muzaffargarh is bracing for a major flood wave expected in the next 2–3 days, with many villages already underwater. In Bahawalnagar, cotton and rice crops have suffered extensive damage, and key connecting roads have been washed away.

In Mailsi (Vehari), a breach in a protective embankment has submerged villages and fields. In Multan’s Jalalpur Pirwala area, Sutlej floodwaters have entered residential zones, prompting ongoing rescue efforts.

Evacuations and Rescue Challenges:

Despite repeated warnings from authorities, many residents are unwilling to evacuate, reluctant to leave behind homes and livestock. Emergency response teams continue to work around the clock, but rising water levels and broken infrastructure are hindering relief operations.

India’s heavy rain trigger floods and landslides, 30 killed

India's heavy rain trigger floods and landslides, 30 killed

New Delhi: Torrential rainfall in northern India has unleashed deadly floods and triggered a landslide along the popular Hindu pilgrimage route to shrine in Jammu, killing at least 30 people, news agency ANI reported on Wednesday.

The disaster struck on Tuesday near the revered shrine, one of India’s most visited pilgrimage sites, as heavy downpours destabilized the mountainous terrain.

The landslide is part of a wider crisis across the Himalayan region, where intense monsoon rains have claimed at least 60 lives over the past week. Another 200 people remain missing after devastating flash floods in Kishtwar, Indian-administered Kashmir.

The situation has been worsened by severe damage to infrastructure and communications. Telecom networks in the affected regions are nearly non-functional. “Communication is almost nonexistent,” said Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

In addition to the fatalities, the flooding has caused widespread disruption. Authorities ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Jammu after the city was inundated with a staggering 368 mm (14.5 inches) of rainfall on Tuesday alone.

Several rivers—including the Tawi, Chenab, and Basantar—have risen dangerously above alert levels, flooding low-lying areas. Jammu district official Rakesh Kumar confirmed that key highways linking Jammu to the rest of India have been damaged, and a major bridge on the Tawi river collapsed, swallowing multiple vehicles.

Officials are urging residents to remain indoors at night and stay away from riverbanks, as weather forecasts predict continued rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, particularly across the union territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Rescue operations are ongoing, but treacherous conditions and communication breakdowns have hindered relief efforts.

Pakistan has been struggling with intense monsoon rains in recent weeks.

Hamas disputes Israeli account of deadly strike on Gaza’s Nasser hospital

Hamas disputes Israeli account of deadly strike on Gaza’s Nasser hospital

Gaza City: Hamas has publicly challenged the Israeli military’s account of a deadly airstrike on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza, which killed 21 people, including journalists, medics, and rescue workers.

The group says none of the victims were affiliated with the Palestinian movement, contradicting Israel’s claim that six Hamas operatives were among the dead.

The Israeli military stated the strike targeted a Hamas-operated surveillance camera monitoring Israeli troop movements, asserting that six Hamas fighters were killed in the operation. However, Hamas claims at least two of the individuals named by Israel were killed at different times and locations — one reportedly in al-Mawasi, far from the hospital in Khan Younis.

The attack occurred Monday and was captured in part by a live Reuters feed, which abruptly cut out as Israeli forces launched the first strike. Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri was killed instantly.

A second strike hit minutes later, killing rescue workers and four more journalists who had rushed to the scene: Ahmed Abu Aziz, Mariam Abu Daqqa, Mohammad Salama, and Moaz Abu Taha.

Human rights organizations have condemned the incident as a “double-tap” strike — a tactic involving an initial attack followed by a second targeting first responders — which they argue amounts to a war crime. Global criticism has mounted over what many see as Israel’s increasing use of indiscriminate force in Gaza.

Trump’s 50% tariff come into effect

Trump's 50% tariff come into effect

India faces a 50% tariff on goods exported to the US, effective today, as imposed by the Donald Trump administration. The tariffs will impact Rs 4,00,060 crore worth of Indian export merchandise to America.

Meanwhile, as trade talks between the two nations continue to stall, the govt is exploring multiple ways to minimise the effects of the punitive tariffs. Discussions are ongoing between India and the US regarding a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). The US delegation’s visit to India, planned for August 25, has been deferred.

The calculation behind the tariff math is 25 per cent taxes plus a 25 per cent penalty that has been imposed in response to “threats to the United States by the government of the Russian Federation”, and penalises India for buying Russian oil directly or indirectly.

Nearly half of India’s exports, worth $87.3 billion, will be hit by the 50 per cent tariffs. The sectors that will be affected include textiles, apparel, gems and jewellery, seafood, leather goods, steel, aluminium, copper, organic chemicals and handicrafts.

Massive Tax Bonanza:

Facing the economic turbulence triggered by recent tariff hikes, the Indian government has gone into damage control. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged tax relief measures to soften the blow, promising a significant cut aimed at supporting both everyday citizens and the backbone of the economy—India’s small businesses.

In a symbolic and impassioned speech from the ramparts of Delhi’s Red Fort on Independence Day, Modi—sporting a vivid saffron turban—announced what he called a “Massive Tax Bonanza” coming as a Diwali gift. He also renewed his call for economic self-reliance, urging shopkeepers and entrepreneurs to proudly display signs reading “Swadeshi” or “Made in India” at their storefronts.

Indian water release triggers major flood crisis in Punjab

Indian water release triggers major flood crisis in Punjab

Lahore: A flood emergency has been declared in parts of Punjab following India’s release of excess water from its eastern dams, which has inundated major rivers across the province.

In response to the worsening situation, the Pakistan Army has been deployed in the flood-hit districts of Kasur, Sialkot, and Narowal to assist in relief and rescue operations.

According to the Punjab Home Department, army troops are being mobilized to support civil administration in safeguarding lives and managing large-scale evacuations. While Rescue 1122, Civil Defense, and Police units are actively engaged in ongoing efforts, the magnitude of the flooding has necessitated military intervention.

Both India and Pakistan have been facing relentless monsoon rains, but Pakistan’s eastern Punjab region — considered the country’s agricultural heartland — is under increased threat due to the unilateral release of water by India into transboundary rivers.

Rivers Swell to Dangerous Levels:

Floodwaters have surged through the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers, causing significant breaches in Narowal, Sialkot, and Shakargarh.

Reports confirm that in Zafarwal, a portion of the Hanjli Bridge collapsed due to intense water flow from Nullah Dek, severing road access to dozens of nearby villages.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in its early Wednesday advisory, termed the situation “extreme” and warned that vulnerable areas are already under threat of inundation.

The Ravi River at Jassar is currently carrying a flow of 170,000 cusecs, but forecasts suggest that this volume could rise significantly to 250,000 cusecs. This increase poses a serious risk, as such levels are likely to breach embankments and result in flooding of nearby settlements.

Authorities and residents in the surrounding areas are on high alert, preparing for potential evacuation and emergency response efforts.

Meanwhile, the Chenab River at Marala is projected to reach an alarming 690,000 cusecs. This staggering volume of water raises severe concerns about widespread flooding across the region. If the forecast holds, extensive damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and homes could occur, affecting thousands of people along the river’s path.

The Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala is already flowing at 245,000 cusecs, and further increases are expected in the coming days. This high flow, coupled with additional water entering the river system, could worsen the situation and heighten the risk of flooding in adjacent low-lying areas.

Emergency services are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for possible flood mitigation and relief operations.

High Alert and Evacuations Underway:

Low-lying areas along the rivers have been placed on high alert, especially in regions like Shahdara and along Motorway-2, where the Ravi continues to rise steadily. Authorities have urged residents in at-risk zones to immediately evacuate and cooperate with rescue teams.

The NDMA has emphasized that delayed evacuation could result in loss of life, and families are being relocated to safer ground where relief camps are being established.

Army Joins the Relief Effort:

The Pakistan Army’s deployment will be coordinated with district administrations, and Army Aviation units may be engaged for airlifts and aerial surveillance where needed.

All relevant departments of the Punjab government are on emergency footing, monitoring the situation 24/7 and mobilizing resources to prevent loss of life and property.

India alerts Pakistan on flash floods for third time in two days

India alerts Pakistan on flash floods for third time in two days

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI: In a rare moment of cross-border cooperation, India has issued its third flood alert to Pakistan within just two days, warning of high water levels and potential flash floods in the Sutlej and Tawi rivers.

The alerts come in the wake of intense rainfall in Jammu & Kashmir, prompting India’s Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for the region. As a consequence, Indian authorities formally notified Pakistan of rising water levels likely to affect downstream areas across the border.

On Sunday, India communicated a warning at 10 a.m. via its High Commission in Islamabad, alerting Pakistan to a high flood in the Tawi River.

The next day, two separate alerts were issued — first at 10 a.m. regarding high water levels at Harike Barrage on the Sutlej River, and a second at 6 p.m., pointing to high flood conditions below Ferozepur.

These warnings were conveyed through diplomatic channels and not via the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) mechanisms, as India had suspended treaty communications following the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

Nevertheless, the alerts mark a rare moment of cooperation and timely coordination during a humanitarian crisis.

Following India’s warning, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed receiving the alerts and passed the information to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Pakistan Meteorological Department to initiate preventive measures.

In Pakistan, the situation continues to worsen as a high flood has been declared at Guddu Barrage. The recorded upstream flow stands at 543,184 cusecs, while the downstream flow is at 507,853 cusecs, indicating a dangerous volume of water surging through the region.

The floodwaters have inundated multiple villages and large stretches of agricultural land across Sindh and South Punjab. Hundreds of families have been displaced, and standing crops  particularly sugarcane  have been submerged, causing significant damage to livelihoods in these rural areas.

Villages such as Bakhshan Shah, Abdul Rehman Wagon, Sajan Wagon, and Murad Chachar are among the most severely affected. Homes have been flooded, and local infrastructure has been overwhelmed, adding to the suffering of residents.

Despite the growing emergency, the response from local administrations has been slow and inadequate. Residents report a lack of organized evacuations, absence of medical camps, and no provision of shelters. As a result, many have been forced to flee on their own, carrying their livestock and belongings in search of safety.

Concerns have also been raised over illegal water pipe installations in key irrigation feeders — Begari Sindh Feeder, Desert Pat Feeder, and Ghotki Feeder — which may compromise the integrity of protective dykes. Authorities are yet to act decisively on this issue.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, flash floods have cut off over 3,000 residents in the Dain area of Ghizer district, where an old bridge was washed away. Emergency boats are being used to ferry people and supplies, while the reconstruction of an RCC bridge is pending federal assistance.

“Temporary boats are helping affected residents, but we need federal government support to restore full connectivity,” said GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq.

Meanwhile, relief operations continue in Talidas, where hundreds of families have been displaced.

Elon Musk sues Apple and OpenAI, Alleges ‘Monopolistic’ AI partnership

Elon Musk sues Apple and OpenAI, Alleges ‘Monopolistic’ AI partnership

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, alleging that the two tech giants have conspired to suppress competition in the AI chatbot market.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in a Texas federal court, accuses Apple of giving OpenAI’s ChatGPT preferential treatment in the App Store, while sidelining competitors like Musk’s own chatbot, Grok.

Apple and OpenAI have locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing, the lawsuit states.

Musk, who launched xAI in March 2023 following the rapid rise of ChatGPT, has positioned Grok as a direct competitor. He alleges that Grok’s app — despite boasting “a million reviews with a 4.9 average rating” — has been systematically excluded from Apple’s featured lists and promotional space, reducing its visibility to users.

Apple has integrated ChatGPT into its iPhones, iPads, and Macs, while rejecting Musk’s claims of bias in the App Store. “This latest filing is consistent with Mr. Musk’s ongoing pattern of harassment,” an OpenAI spokesperson said.

Musk launched xAI in March 2023, shortly after ChatGPT’s explosive debut, and has sought to leverage his $33 billion acquisition of X to train Grok. The lawsuit argues that Apple’s 65% share of the U.S. smartphone market, combined with OpenAI’s dominance in AI chatbots, creates a de facto monopoly.

Palestinian journalists among 14 killed in Israeli attack on hospital

Palestinian journalists among 14 killed in Israeli attack on hospital

Gaza: At least 14 people, including three Palestinian journalists, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a hospital in southern Gaza, according to local health authorities.

The latest attack comes amid Israel’s intensified military campaign to seize full control of Gaza City, prompting a mass displacement of nearly one million Palestinians toward the south.

Medical workers at the targeted facility reported overwhelming casualties and warned of worsening conditions, particularly for children suffering from starvation. Doctors say they are powerless to treat the growing number of malnourished patients, blaming an Israeli-imposed blockade that has resulted in what they call a “man-made famine.”

Escalation in Zeitoun and Sabra:

The Israeli army has significantly escalated its ground and aerial offensive in the Zeitoun and Sabra neighborhoods of Gaza City since August 6. According to the Palestinian Civil Defence, more than 1,000 buildings have been completely destroyed in the area, with hundreds of civilians feared trapped under the rubble.

“The ongoing shelling and blocked access routes are preventing many rescue and aid operations,” the Civil Defence said in a statement on Sunday. “There are grave concerns about the continued incursion of Israeli forces into Gaza City, at a time when field crews lack the capacity to deal with the intensity of the ongoing Israeli attacks.”

Emergency responders say they are receiving continuous reports of missing persons but are unable to respond due to the security situation. Hospitals, already operating beyond capacity, are struggling to handle the influx of injured civilians.

No Safe Haven:

“There is no safe area in the Gaza Strip, whether in the north or south, where shelling continues to target civilians in their homes, shelters, and even in their displacement camps,” the Civil Defence statement added.

Israeli tanks have entered the Sabra neighborhood in recent days, part of a broader strategy to fully occupy Gaza City. The military push is driving a massive internal displacement, with close to 1 million people forced to flee toward the southern regions of the besieged enclave.

Cross-Border Escalation in Yemen:

In a related development, Houthi forces in Yemen reported that Israeli airstrikes on the capital, Sanaa, killed at least six people and wounded 86 others. The strikes reportedly targeted the presidential palace and multiple energy facilities.
