U.S. kicks off 50% tariff on India over Russian oil purchases

Washington: The United States has officially imposed a 50% import tariff on Indian goods, marking a strong economic response by the Trump administration against what it has called India’s “double standards.”

According to a statement issued by the White House, India’s continued purchase of discounted oil from Russia not only violates global sanctions but also financially supports Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump made it clear that countries buying oil from Russia will face consequences, reaffirming America’s firm stance on the matter.

He criticized nations like India, which on one hand claim close ties with the U.S. while on the other continue to support Russia indirectly. “They must now pay the price for their double-dealing policies,” he said.

Experts believe the tariff hike will significantly impact India’s exports to the U.S., potentially leading to job losses and a slowdown in the country’s economic growth.

According to an economic report, India exported goods worth $87 billion to the U.S. last year, with key sectors including textiles, pharmaceuticals, auto parts, and technology.
