With Shah Rukh Khan’s newest film Pathaan, Hollywood star Rachel Ann Mullins made her Bollywood debut; nevertheless, she was unaware of Shah Rukh Khan before to working on the movie. Rachel discusses how she began her trip in India and her work on Pathaa in an exclusive conversation.

The League and Happy Endings are two of Rachel’s best-known appearances. She has also contributed to Hollywood productions like The Entourage Movie and Neighbours. In Pathaan, she portrays Alice, a Russian agent.

When Rachel first joined the project, she claimed she had no idea of the film’s scope and had only been able to speculate about it after learning that Deepika Padukone was involved. “When I made my reservation, I knew nothing about Pathaan. The moment I spotted Deepika Padukone’s name on wardrobe trunks when I was filming at the Yash Raj studio in Mumbai, not even the title. I anticipated that this movie would be tremendously successful. She is very stunning.

Asked about Shah Rukh Khan, she added, “I’m going to catch some ire for this but I didn’t know who he was until we worked together. One of the assistant directors explained that he was a big deal. We had a nice day together and it turns out we share the same birthday.”

Recalling how it all began, Rachel said, “My incredible agent, Ravi Ahuja had me audition for the part. I was in the Maldives when I got the call that I booked it and immediately went to Mumbai for costume fitting.”

She also talked about the response that she has received since the release of Pathaan: “I’ve gotten so much love because of it. Watching the response from fans the world over has left me with my jaw on the floor.”

Speaking on how Hollywood and Bollywood operate differently, she said that there are some aspects that are extremely similar. However, she continued, “The production value and degree of talent in individual actors is the fundamental difference between Hollywood and Bollywood. In Bollywood, everyone has an equal ability to act, sing, and dance. That is incredibly uncommon in Hollywood. Hollywood, a union town, has a tonne of labour restrictions, but Bollywood doesn’t have the same stringent regulations. Bollywood today resembles old Hollywood more.

“I learned that following my instincts and changing myself when the world changes is never a bad decision. I’m so happy I refused to stop working even when Hollywood shut down. I’m a big believer in the idea of going where you’re treated best and I love that Bollywood is really accepting of me,” she said.

Elaborating on how the switch to Indian entertainment happened for her, Rachel said, “After I shot part of my documentary that I directed and produced in India, back in 2016. I spoke to an agent on LinkedIn. We talked about Bollywood projects for years and I was very busy in Hollywood. However, when coronavirus lockdown imploded the entertainment business in Los Angeles I thought it was time to make the jump. At the height of India’s lockdown I was admitted and immediately started auditioning for projects the day after I landed.”

Talking about her first Indian project, Rachel Ann Mullins says, “The first time I went to India was for a documentary which I was producing and directing. Interviewing girls living in an acid attack survivor house in New Delhi changed my career and me as a person.”

A quick #AskSRK for fun.” While many fans rushed to drop their questions for the actor, a user tried trolling Shah Rukh and commented on his female avatar from an award show.

Replying to a post shared by Yash Raj Films on the micro-blogging site, the troll wrote to Shah Rukh, “Femme fatale” with laughing emojis alongside a photo of the actor, dressed as a woman. Responding to the user, Shah Rukh wrote back, “Arre no no this is me dressed as a lady. I know I am attractive in all avatars, but u will have to find yourself a better muse my friend!! Apologies for misleading you.”

Meanwhile, the original post shared by YRF who is backing Pathaan, read, “She is a total femme fatale in #Pathaan as she transforms into a spy with a license to kill! Shah Rukh recently talked about working with John when there were rumours about their actual fight. He discussed how John stood his ground during the filming and referred to him as a “national treasure.”

Shah Rukh plays the soldier Pathaan in Siddharth Anand’s film Pathaan. Pathaan ends his “hiatus” after he receives a call to fight for a terrorist group led by John Abraham. Shah Rukh is joined by Deepika Padukone on his journey.

Speaking of the movie, Shah Rukh discussed his thoughts on John playing a negative part in a conversation session that was posted on the Yash Raj Film YouTube channel. He recounted how they had become friends and had known John ever since he moved to Mumbai. Shah Rukh called John “shy, very quiet, and repulsive,” yet he was eager to watch him in Pathaan.

 

“I met him many times when he was doing a film or we wanting to do a film together and this happened per chance. I was very keen he does it and he was kind enough to do a role where he is really a bad guy. He is a top star. He has his own franchises happening and he has got these really cool action films happening and to decide to take on a film where he is a bad guy, you know, so takes a lot of guts,” he added. Shah Rukh also shared while most actors refuse to play antagonists in films, John is different. “Takes a lot of confidence in your own self, especially when I see in the Hindi film scenario. Heroes don’t play bad guys. I’d love to play a bad guy. I gained deep respect for him.”

 

It was nice working with him and all so I realised he is a gentle giant. You know when we were doing action and everything. He says…he called me a national treasure and said, ‘I will not hurt you.’ I said you can, it’s ok. He is very shy and I had to do a lot of convincing to tell him it’s ok, you can punch me and I won’t get hurt. I think he is so proficient in action. He really helped me look nice you know, in body language. It was very kind of him. I think when you are doing a film with a co-star like John, there is a lot to learn from him. Being the star that he is and the respect that he has for me,” said the superstar. He signed off with these words: “I hope when Pathaan comes out, one of the most liked characters, genuinely is John’s. I really wish it because it takes a lot of guts to do what he has done as an actor and as a star,” Shah Rukh shared his work experience with John in their first film together.

 

Prior reports stated that John and Shah Rukh’s relationship was not going well. According to rumours, John was unhappy with the way Pathaan turned out, which might have affected his relationship with Shah Rukh. John’s attendance at an event where he sidestepped a query about Shah Rukh Khan’s body in Pathaan fueled the rumours. John afterwards wrote a note about Pathaan.

The movie Pathaan will debut on January 25.

Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” gets a UA certificate from CBFC

The CBFC has officially granted the UA certificate to Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which caused controversy shortly after the release of its first song Besharam Rang (Central Board of Film Certification).

Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst, broke the good news. He also disclosed how long the movie was.

Shah Rukh Khan tweeted: “Pathaan run time… #Pathaan certified by #CBFC on 2 Jan 2023. Duration: 146. 16 min: sec (2 hours 26 min 16 sec). Theatrical release date: Wednesday 25 Jan 2023.”

Prior to the film’s release, the CBFC had mandated that adjustments be made. Besharam Rang has undergone three alterations, according to the reports. The alterations have been swapped out for appropriate movie shots.

Additionally, some dialogue in the movie has been modified, such as Langda Lulle becoming Toote Phoote, ex-KGB becoming ex-SBU, Mrs. Bharatmata becoming Hamari Bharatmata, and Ashok Chakta becoming Veer Puraskar. Although several scenes needed to be changed, the Film Certification Board approved the movie without making any changes to the costume or the song.

The fourth instalment in the Yash Raj Films spy series, Pathaan, is directed by Siddharth Anand and stars Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham. The movie is scheduled to premiere on January 25.
