US President-elect Donald Trump calls Russian President Putin amid Ukraine war tensions

Donald Trump

Donald Trump, the newly elected president of the United States, has reportedly held a private phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The Washington Post, in a report on November 10, 2024, revealed that Trump reached out to Putin on November 7, a day after his election victory, urging the Russian leader not to escalate the war.

According to France 24, Donald Trump, who was speaking from Florida, reminded Putin of “Washington’s sizeable military presence in Europe” and expressed his interest in pursuing further talks aimed at resolving the war in Ukraine.

The call reflects Trump’s longstanding stance on the need for direct diplomacy in ending the conflict. During his election campaign, he had promised to find a solution to the war “within a day” of taking office.

However, Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, did not confirm the details of the phone call, stating, “We do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders.”

Cheung also emphasized Trump’s decisive election win, saying, “Leaders from around the world know America will return to prominence on the world stage… [and] that is why leaders have begun the process of developing stronger relationships with the 45th and 47th presidents.”

Trump’s relationship with Putin has been notably warmer than that of his predecessor, President Joe Biden, who has not spoken with the Russian president since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
