Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: PlayStation 5 Game’s Pixelated Playground Steals The Show

Spider-Man 2
  • The city in Spider-Man 2 offers players a vast playground.
  • The open world is designed to feel organic.
  • The game brings improvements to web swinging and aerial manoeuvres.

“While the cinematic story delivers some impressive spectacle, it’s the city of Spider-Man 2 that steals the show. Twice the size of the original’s recreation of New York, this new pixelated playground gives web-happy players all of Manhattan, Miles Morales’ Brooklyn, and the all-new Queens to seamlessly swing across, adding some welcome variety to the original’s one-note blocks. “A big thing for us was the organic nature of the open world,” says creative director Bryan Intihar. “You can be on a rooftop and look out and, without any UI, you can see visual cues in the world. If you see something happening down on the street, when you do engage there is now a narrative wrapped around what’s happening. So, hopefully [these side activities] don’t feel just like a checklist.”

It is a welcome change, with the original’s bizarre obsession with chasing down pigeons feeling closer to an RSPCA interview than a Spider-Man-worthy endeavour. What really sold players on the Spidey fantasy was the endlessly satisfying web-swinging, and there has been a nice aerial upgrade. Building on the original’s sense of momentum, webbed wings sewn into our boys’ suits turn these spiders into flying squirrels, allowing for some gleefully sustained soaring as you glide perilously close to shrieking pedestrians.

While the demo’s story threads prohibit me from doing so, Intihar also informs me that players can seamlessly swap between Peter and Miles as they zip across their respective corners of the big Apple – a feat that would feel more impressive if Grand Theft Auto V hadn’t already achieved this on PS3 a decade earlier. Thankfully, when you come down to street level, the PS5 difference becomes immediately apparent. Where in 2018, shopfronts and buildings felt like little more than cardboard cutouts, this time, you can peer inside individual shopfronts, each with authentically different exteriors and interiors. From a dimly lit game DVD shop – complete with authentically indecisive customers – to a homeless man swaying drunkenly outside a hipster furniture store, this Marvel-ready Manhattan feels impressively lived-in.

“It’s not 1-1, but things are where you expect them to be. Obviously we want [our New York] to be familiar, but at the end of the day, this is Marvel’s New York – there’s the Avengers tower here – so we just want to make the city fun to traverse.”

Yet Spider-Man isn’t the only superhero that Marvel has allowed Insomniac to play with; its sister studio is working on a secretive Wolverine game. While Intihar has nothing to say about Logan’s antics, he does reveal: “There will be more Marvel Easter eggs in [Spider-Man 2] than in the first one or in Miles Morales.”

As my demo’s crescendo builds, it seems Insomniac has been paying attention to its PlayStation peers. After an Uncharted-worthy river chase where Spidey leaps between dinghies mounted with machine guns before being dragged across the water by a raging Connors, I’m thrust into a truly epic three-stage boss battle. After tracking the lumpy lizard across an eerily abandoned fish market, complete with a PG-13-ready jumpscare, a building-levelling brawl sees spider and lizard slug it out in a tense sewer showdown.

Despite my suit of symbiote abilities, I die several times before eventually toppling the brute, causing an increasingly enraged, kaiju-sized Connors to return to the surface, wreaking havoc across Manhattan. As I eventually catch up with Connors and pin him to a building, I at last stop his rampage, pummeling him as he clings to a crumbling skyscraper. While PS4’s Spider-Man was no stranger to spectacle, each individual boss fight felt singular and neatly contained. It’s this gleeful sense of escalation from one jaw-dropping encounter to the next that makes Spider-Man 2 feel like a fully fledged sequel.

“We really wanted to push the boss fights to take advantage of what the PS5 can do, going seamlessly between buildings above and below ground. Not only to increase the scale of these showdowns, but changing up the phases of the fight to rack up the difficulty. So, you may have mastered phase one, but now for phase two something else gets introduced. I think here we really have that sense of challenge.”

In many ways, Spider-Man 2 feels like the PS5 itself. At first glance, it appears to be merely a bigger and shinier version of what came before, but over time, its smorgasbord of small changes add up to something more substantial. It’s the iteration rather than innovation approach, a bigger and better successor that quietly impresses rather than blows your socks off. Yet when the result is a blockbuster this well-made, it is hard to walk away unimpressed.

“Jusant” Redefines Climbing Games With Exciting Innovations

Jusant
  • Jusant features some of the most captivating rock-climbing mechanics.
  • Uncharted 4’s frequent climbing segments left the players dissatisfied.
  • The world of Jusant is exceptionally serene, marked by a profound stillness.

One of the significant gripes about Uncharted 4 was the frequent demand for climbing as Nathan Drake, the international thief and treasure hunter. The climbing segments, which could hardly be considered puzzles, often lacked intrigue or challenge.

Uncharted’s strengths appeared to lie in its storytelling, characters, and the overall adventure. The puzzles, including those in dungeons, seemed rather uninteresting and the climbing soon lost its appeal.

If only Uncharted had climbing mechanics as engaging as those in Jusant. Developed by French video game developer DON’T NOD, this upcoming platformer features some of the most captivating rock-climbing mechanics ever seen in a video game. However, Jusant’s appeal will likely differ from Naughty Dog’s more action-oriented games. It doesn’t involve shooting, combat, or high-speed pursuits. Characters don’t play a central role, at least not in the initial hours. It’s a solitary and quiet game.

The world of Jusant is exceptionally serene, marked by a profound stillness. The towering monolith you ascend was evidently submerged underwater in the past. Traces of a bygone ocean’s presence are scattered throughout, but like the sea, the humanity that once inhabited these sandstone vistas has vanished. Only remnants of this rugged civilization endure, dispersed among long-abandoned chambers, in the form of notes and diaries.

Early in the game, you encounter a companion named Ballast, a peculiar spirit composed of the rarest substance: water. Ballast will unlock new routes, activating desert flora to provide fresh footholds for scaling previously inaccessible heights.

Beyond its captivating world, what truly distinguishes Jusant is its intricate climbing mechanics. Climbing necessitates the use of the left and right triggers to grasp and release handholds. You are fully equipped with mountaineering gear, attaching a rope to an anchor before each ascent. You can add new anchor points as needed, allowing changes in direction, rope swings to distant walls, or rappelling in new directions.

As you ascend surfaces, a stamina bar gradually depletes, but it can be effortlessly replenished by halting to catch your breath. This is a remarkably tranquil game. While it presents puzzles and challenges that require thought, it isn’t punishing. The combination of its immersive atmosphere, blending ancient nautical remnants with desert landscapes, and precise climbing mechanics make Jusant one of the most atmospheric platformers I’ve encountered recently. The concealed paths meandering through the desert, revealing clues, add layers of mystery.

Jusant possesses a haunting simplicity, a striking minimalism hinting at a world ravaged by a catastrophic climate apocalypse. It’s a beautiful, tranquil, and equally somber gaming experience.

Jusant is set to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S this Halloween, and it will be available on Game Pass on the release day.

Sony’s latest PS5 beta firmware supports 1440p

Sony's latest PS5 beta firmware
  • Sony released a beta firmware update for the PlayStation 5 that includes two much-desired features.
  • Sony’s televisions have also gained support for VRR, and the PS5 follows suit.
  • Participants can now view their friends’ profiles after accepting a friend request.

Sony released a beta firmware update for the PlayStation 5 that includes two much-desired features: a 1440p output and game folders.

The 1440p output function is quite simple. Along with 720p, 1080p, and 2160p, the PlayStation 5 console can now also output in 2560×1440 resolution. Since the launch of the PlayStation 4 Pro, this feature has been demanded, but it has just recently become available on Sony gaming consoles. Since the Xbox One X, Microsoft has had this choice.

The games would function largely as predicted. While games rendering at 2160p will be downscaled to 1440p, those rendering at 1440p or lower will output natively.

The fact that the PlayStation now supports 1440p is perhaps not all that unexpected. One of the 1440p-resolution INZONE gaming monitors from Sony’s most current lineup was just released. This is not the first time Sony has delayed introducing a feature to its platform in order to coordinate with its other devices; early this year, Sony’s televisions gained support for VRR, and the PS5 followed suit.

The inclusion of folders, or gamelists as Sony refers to them, is the second significant improvement. Now, you may make gamelists to organize the installed games on your computer into custom folders. There can be up to 15 gamelists, each of which can include 100 games.

This was a much-needed feature since all of your downloaded games are presently just thrown together in a single location with no ability to organise them. It is unclear why Sony waited so long to include this feature in the PS5, considering it was available on PlayStation 4 consoles as well.

The beta also includes the following new features:

  • Compare 3D Audio and Stereo Audio

You can now compare the differences between 3D and stereo audio on the same screen and select the setting that best suits your needs.

  • Simpler Access to Activities That Are In Progress

To make it as simple and quick as possible for you to pick up where you left off when you resume a game, in-progress activities are frequently shown prominently at the top of the game area.

  • Request Share Screen

To monitor your party members’ gameplay, you can now ask them to start Share Screen. Select [Request Share Screen] from the voice chat card, then choose the party member you want to submit the request to.

  • Joinable Game Notification

You will now get a notification when you join a party and a party member is playing a game you can join. Direct access to the game is available from the notice.

  • Read New Friends’ Profiles

You may now view your new friend’s profile in [Accepted Requests] after accepting a friend request from the [Received] list.

  • Send Stickers and Voice Messages in Game Base

You can now send stickers and voice messages to your groups from the Game Base card.

Participants in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France are now receiving the beta.
