Queen Elizabeth celebrates 96th birthday

Elizabeth II is Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York. the abdication of her brother, King Edward VIII, in 1936, her father ascended to the throne, making Elizabeth the heir presumptive.

On Thursday Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 96th birthday in the same year that marks her 70 years on the throne.

The Queen has taken a quiet break in Sandringham, her estate in Norfolk, eastern England, according to Buckingham Palace.

The queen is seen in a picture produced to commemorate the occasion, standing between two fall ponies named Bybeck Nightingale and Bybeck Katie. According to the royal family’s Twitter feed, the photo was taken in the grounds of Windsor Castle in March.

“Wishing Her Majesty The Queen a very happy 96th birthday today!” reads the tweet. “An inspiration to so many across the UK, the Commonwealth and the world, it’s particularly special to be celebrating in this #PlatinumJubilee year.”
