Major parts of Karachi still brave power outage

Major parts
  • More than 35 percent of Karachi is without electricity.
  • Electricity has been restored only on 1,300 feeders.
  • Gas and water crisis has also occurred in many areas of city.

KARACHI: The major parts of Karachi are still deprived of electricity despite the passage of 26 hours of power break down.

Sources said that electricity has been restored only on 1,300 feeders out of 2,000 feeders that supply electricity to Karachi. In the name of load management, load shedding of one and a half to two hours is being done to balance the load on restored feeders.

Citizens and school-going children are facing difficulties due to power outages. Gas and water crisis has also occurred in many areas due to power outages. The power supply has been suspended again shortly after the restoration in various areas.

The power was restored in Bahadurabad, Dhoraji, Askari 4, Gulistan e Johar, Orangi Town, and Liaquatabad after 20 hours and it went off again in the morning.

FB Area, North Nazimabad, Mehmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, Defense View, Qayyumabad, Korangi, Landhi, and various sectors of Scheme 33 are still without power despite the passage of 26 hours.

Sources said even after 26 hours, more than 35 percent of Karachi is without electricity.

Earlier,Ministry of Energy claimed that all 1,112 grid stations of the country’s national grid have been restored after a major 24-hour power breakdown.

“All 1,112 grid stations restored within 24 hours nationwide,” tweeted the ministry.

According to the Ministry of Energy, 48 to 72 hours are usually required to re-link power plants of about 9500 megawatts to the transmission system after any power breakdown.

On other hand, Minister for Energy (Power Division) Engineer Khurram Dastgir expressed confidence that the electricity system which was affected due to a major breakdown, would be restored in phases.

He said technical teams of the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) and other experts were busy rectifying the fault, which occurred in the North-South system.

He said electricity was being restored in parts of the country in phases and hopefully it will be completed soon.

The minister said the transmission system tripped due to unusual fluctuation in the voltage of the national grid.

Khurram Dastgir said that the entire transmission system was safe and there was no disruption in it despite the power breakdown. A power plant located in the Uch area was running and power supply to some areas of Balochistan and Southern Punjab has been restored, he said.

He said partial power supply to Karachi has also been started through Thar Coal Power plants and he was personally supervising the restoration operation from NPCC.
