PTA announces new deadline for VPN registration

PTA announces new deadline for VPN registration
  • Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are used to mask users’ online identities and encrypt internet communications.
  • PTA has instructed internet users to register VPNs by June 30, 2020.
  • The telecom regulator stated that the exercise was being carried out to support legitimate ICT services in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has reiterated its warning that it is against PTA rules to use any kind of communication, including Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that make communication secret or encrypted.

The regulator announced that it had streamlined the registration process in a public notice.

It stated that in order to prevent interruption, governmental and commercial sector companies, foreign missions, and independent contractors must register their VPNs by October 31.

Applications for registration will only be accepted online, according to the announcement.

VPNs are used to mask users’ online identities and encrypt internet communications.

This makes it more challenging for other parties to monitor a user’s online activities or steal data, claims cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab.

PTA has instructed internet users to register VPNs by June 30, 2020, back in 2020.

The telecom regulator stated at the time that the exercise was being carried out to support legitimate ICT services in Pakistan and to guarantee the security of telecom consumers.

PTA claims that the procedure for registering VPNs is not brand-new and has been popular since 2010.

Jan-Jul 2022: Pakistan produced about 14 MN mobile phones

Pakistan produced about 14 MN mobile phones
  • Local manufacturing facilities produced 14.94 million mobile phone handsets during the first seven months of 2022.
  • 16 million phones were commercially imported.
  • According to PTA data, 46% of mobile devices on the Pakistani network are 2G and 54% are smartphones.

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), local manufacturing facilities produced/assembled 14.94 million mobile phone handsets during the first seven months (January-July) of 2022 as opposed to 1.16 million ones that were commercially imported.

In July 2022, local factories produced or assembled 0.86 million handsets.

In comparison to the 13.05 million produced or assembled in 2020, this amount was 24.66 million in 2021, an increase of 88 percent.

According to the PTA’s official figures, commercial imports of mobile phone handsets decreased to 10.26 million in 2021 from 24.51 million in 2020.

8.6 million 2G and 6.33 million smartphone handsets are among the 14.94 million mobile phones that were produced or built locally.

According to PTA data, 46% of mobile devices on the Pakistani network are 2G and 54% are smartphones.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $38.804 million in July 2022, up 20.43 percent on a month-over-month (MoM) basis from $32.221 million in June 2022.

This was done despite an increase in local mobile phone production (PBS). Mobile phone imports had negative growth of $67.46 on a year-over-year (YoY) basis from $119.237 million in July 2021, according to its monthly data.

A favorable environment for the production of mobile devices has been developed in Pakistan thanks to the successful implementation of the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) and supportive government regulations, such as the mobile manufacturing strategy.

It has also improved Pakistan’s mobile ecosystem by eradicating the market for fake devices and establishing an even playing field for businesses.

As a result of the development of uniform legal channels for all types of gadget imports, it has fostered trust among consumers.

PTA to delete fake Supreme Court social media accounts

PTA to delete fake Supreme Court social media accounts
  • The Supreme Court has discovered that a number of fake accounts have been created in its name.
  • PTA and FIA have been given orders to pursue legal action against anyone using a false Supreme Court account.
  • A stunning 1.6 billion false accounts on Facebook were removed earlier this year.

A spokesperson said earlier today that although the Supreme Court does not have an official social media account, there are still a dozen fictitious accounts of it on various social media platforms.

The court has informed the appropriate authorities to remove all bogus accounts created in its name after discovering a number of them.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) have been given orders to pursue legal action against anyone using a false Supreme Court account.

The representative made it abundantly apparent that because the Supreme Court does not have a legitimate social media account, all online profiles using its name are false.

Fake accounts on social media have always been a concern. These accounts frequently propagate fake information, overstuff their feeds with memes, stock photographs, and repeated images, or they exist purely to troll others.

Even while some phoney accounts are only there for amusement and not necessarily harm, the fact that millions of individuals are adopting false identities is nevertheless a matter of concern.

A stunning 1.6 billion false accounts on Facebook’s network were removed earlier this year, down from 1.7 billion the year before.

2.2 billion false accounts, a record number, were deleted from Facebook alone in the first quarter of 2019. This illustrates how widespread phoney profiles are on the internet.

Pakistan to experience more Internet outages

Pakistan to experience more Internet outages
  • The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom has requested technical reports from PTA.
  • According to PTA, these internet outages were brought on by trenches being dug in various locations to channel surplus water.
  • PTCL shared a technical study on the subject with the Information Ministry.

It seems like internet disruptions will always happen. More disruptions are anticipated in Pakistan over the coming days as a result of flooding brought on by the heavy rain.

In the upper Sindh region, cable cuts and fibre optic cable damage have been brought on by the floods.

On Wednesday, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) shared a technical study on the subject with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom.

In the Sukkur division, where fiber-optic connections were primarily damaged by the heavy gear used to clear water from the area, it is claimed that repeated internet disruptions are primarily caused by flood relief efforts.

After becoming aware of the frequent internet failures, the Ministry also requested technical reports from the telecom regulator Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

According to PTA, these internet outages were not brought on by sabotage or criminal activities but rather by trenches being dug in various locations to channel surplus water.

According to sources, multiple cuts in the districts of Ghotki, Khairpur, and Sukkur were to blame for the most recent outages earlier this week, while tehsil Ranipur in Khairpur reported the most significant damage.

The Minister for IT and Telecom, Syed Aminul Haque, stated that the situation was critical and that such events should be anticipated in the future.

Most underground cable channels have been drowned as a result of heavy flooding, despite relief workers’ or villagers’ efforts to redirect floodwater by constructing trenches on roads and footpaths.

The ministry has instructed PTCL to declare an emergency whenever such an occurrence is reported in the system so that repair work can begin while PTA continuously evaluates the level of service.

Only 70% of the 6.5 terabytes of the capacity of PTCL’s network cables are actually in use, allowing for the transfer of traffic to alternative connections in an emergency.

PTA specifies minimum broadband speed

PTA specifies minimum broadband speed
  • PTA decided adjustment in the country’s broadband internet regulations.
  • The minimum broadband internet speed should be 4Mbps.
  • You can formally complain to PTA about it if it falls below that level.

Many Pakistanis may soon see faster internet speeds as a result of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) adjustment of the country’s broadband internet regulations.

The telecom regulator discussed internet speeds in Pakistan among other topics while at the Consumer Conference this year.

In Pakistan, the minimum broadband internet speed should be 4Mbps (up from 256 kbps), and you should receive 80% of the promised internet speeds, according to PTA.

For example, if you have a 10Mbps connection, you should always receive at least 8Mbps speed. You may formally complain to PTA about it if it falls below that level.

Many portions of the nation should benefit from faster internet connections as a result, particularly isolated locations with slow download rates.

You can now complain to PTA if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides you with anything less than 4Mbps if your ISP labels itself a “broadband” internet provider.

Additionally, users who only receive 80% of their intended internet connection speeds will benefit from this breakthrough.

It’s unclear whether this solely pertains to download speeds or to upload and download speeds as well.

There may finally be some hope for those PTCL customers who frequently experience speeds that are lower than those that are advertised.

Ways to Complain

Going to PTA’s website and selecting “Consumer Complaints” will allow you to file a complaint.

Here, you can submit your online complaint form, which includes questions about your contact information and the kind of complaint you want to file. Calling PTA’s customer care line at 0800-55055 will also allow you to file a complaint. Every day from 9 am to 9 pm, it is accessible.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has asked TikToK to block vulgar, indecent and immoral content for viewership in Pakistan.

“Keeping in view the growing concerns in the society with respect to content on the platform, the PTA chairman had an online meeting with senior management of TikTok,” according to an official statement issued by PTA.

The PTA chairman Major General (retd) Amir Azeem Bajwa asked the platform to put in place stronger content monitoring and moderation mechanism so that the unlawful material is not accessible or viewed within Pakistan.

Earlier in July, the PTA had issued a ‘final warning‘ to the video-sharing app to clamp down on what it called “immoral, obscene and vulgar” content on the platform.

In its response, TikTok shared a content moderation mechanism for removing any potentially harmful or inappropriate content from its platform, saying that Pakistan is one of the five markets with the largest volume of removed videos.

The company said content moderation is performed by deploying a combination of policies, technologies, and moderation strategies to detect and review problematic content, accounts and implement appropriate penalties.

TikTok has become a global sensation with its 15 to 60-second video clips and is hugely popular among young Pakistanis, with some users building up millions of followers.
