Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s legacy continues to resonate across the globe, leaving an indelible impact on international artists alike.

In a recent conversation, actor and comedian Sohail Ahmed shared how deeply the music legend’s name affected Indian Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh.

“Whenever I mentioned the name of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, by God, his eyes would lower. He would say, ‘I have listened to music from all over the world, but Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is from this land and I cannot understand who he was… I still can’t figure it out. He was beyond anyone’s comprehension,'” said Sohail.

Sohail also highlighted the respect that Pakistan’s rich musical heritage commands, especially in India. “People from India greatly admire our poetry, which is unmatched. They love our actors and singers, and they give respect to our musicians,” Sohail noted.

The comedian further raised a pertinent question about the recognition of Pakistani artists: “So why do we think that a star has to go international to be recognised in Pakistan? Why can’t we respect our own artists when they perform here?”

Sohail fondly recalled a conversation with Master Manzoor Sahib, who praised Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s distinct voice, saying, “His voice didn’t have the same quality as others; he was unique. He didn’t believe in anyone else.”

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s lost album ‘Chain of Light’ set for release

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
  • Unreleased recordings by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan are set to debut.
  • The album titled Chain of Light has surfaced from the tape archives.
  • Chain of Light features four traditional qawwali tracks.

A collection of previously unreleased recordings by the iconic qawwali maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is set to debut on September 20, more than 27 years after his passing. According to Rolling Stone, this “lost” album titled Chain of Light has surfaced from the tape archives of Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records. The label, which signed Nusrat in 1989, produced several acclaimed albums with him during the 1990s.

Chain of Light features four traditional qawwali tracks, including a newly discovered gem. Recorded at Real World Studios in April 1990, around the time Khan was working on Mustt Mustt with Canadian producer Michael Brook, these recordings showcase him at the peak of his vocal abilities.

Renowned for his extensive vocal range spanning six octaves, Khan gained global fame and garnered admiration from western rock and pop icons such as The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. His voice also graced soundtracks for films by Hollywood directors like Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, and Tim Robbins.

Uncovered during an archive relocation in 2021 at Real World Studios, the April 1990 tapes capture Khan just before his international breakthrough. Restored meticulously from the original analogue tapes, Chain of Light includes pristine renditions of classics like Ya Allah Ya Rehman and the rare performance of Ya Gaus Ya Meeran.

Reflecting on Khan’s significance, producer Michael Brook remarked, “There is an amazing clarity to these performances. They are more harmonically adventurous than the other songs that Nusrat was recording at the time and the whole group is firing on all cylinders.”

Longtime manager Rashid Ahmed-Din noted 1990 as pivotal in Khan’s career, marking his expansion into western audiences. Peter Gabriel also shared his admiration, saying, “I’ve had the privilege to work with a tonne of different musicians from all over the world in my time, but perhaps the greatest singer of them all was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan… It was a real delight when we found out this tape had been in our library. This album really shows him at his peak. It’s a wonderful record.”

In addition to the album release, a definitive documentary on Khan’s life titled Ustad is scheduled for release by Islamabad-based Saiyna Bashir Studios by late 2025. Supported by a grant from the British Council, the studio aims to promote Chain of Light in collaboration with Real World Records.

Mustansar Hussain Tarrar calls Javed Akhtar’s words irrelevant

Javed Akhtar
  • The renowned Indian author had expressed admiration for Pakistan’s legendary vocalists.
  • Javed Akhtar blamed Pakistan for the horrific attacks.
  • Pakistani lost its sense of tolerance.

Renowned novelist Mustansar Hussain Tarar, an actor and columnist, has categorically denounced the anti-Pakistan sentiments made by Indian artist and poet Javed Akhtar.

The renowned Indian author had expressed admiration for Pakistan’s legendary vocalists during a recent event in Lahore, but the feeling was not returned. He claimed that while large-scale concerts were planned for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mehdi Hassan in India, no similar concert was planned for the great Indian vocalist Lata Mangeshkar in Pakistan.

Akhtar blamed Pakistan for the horrific attacks on Mumbai and claimed that those responsible were still free to traverse the country. In response to Akhtar’s words, other Pakistani celebrities expressed their indignation.

Speaking at the Lahore Literary Festival (LLF), Tarrar criticised Akhtar’s remarks and claimed that after hearing them, he felt embarrassed of himself. Nonetheless, he didn’t think Akhtar’s comments merited criticism. But he asserted that as a country, Pakistan had lost its sense of tolerance.

The show-stealing remarks came from “Bahao” author, who is known for his audacious pronouncements. He voiced the opinion that, in order to be awarded the Nobel Prize, a writer must employ forceful language to critique the culture in which he lives. But, he lacked the talent.

He claimed that the Pride of Performance and Kamal-e-Fan honours given in Pakistan were equivalent to winning a Nobel Prize.

Kangana Ranaut
  • Javed Akhtar recently stirred a new controversy.
  • Kangna Ranaut took to Twitter in support of Javed Akhtar’s comments.
  • Mishi Khan criticised the Dhaakad actress for her insulting comments against Pakistan.

As a video of his terrorist remark at the Faiz Mela in Lahore went viral online, Bollywood veteran Javed Akhtar recently stirred a new controversy. He stated his opinion that although Indians appreciate Pakistan’s outstanding singers, they do not feel the same way about them. He questioned the idea of formality and claimed that while sizable events were planned for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mehdi Hassan, Lata Mangeshkar was not given the same treatment in Pakistan. Several Pakistani artists were outraged by the statement, yet their peers in the neighbouring nation praised the Indian veteran for it. One of them was the Indian actress Kangna Ranaut, who took to Twitter in support of Javed Akhtar’s comments regarding Pakistanis made during his speech at a public event.

In response, She remarked, “Jab main Javed saab ki poetry sunti hoon toh lagta tha yeh kaise Maa Swarsati ji ki in pe itni kripa hai, lekin dekho kuch toh sachchai hoti hai insaan mein tabhi toh khudai hoti hai unke saath mein … Jai Hind @Javedakhtarjadu.”

“saab… Ghar mein ghuss ke maara .. ha ha.”

A well-known actress in the Pakistani film business named Mishi Khan used her Instagram account to criticise the Dhaakad actress for her insulting and ominous comments against Pakistan. Khan strongly scolded the actress in her message and told her to “behave herself.”

Naeem Abbas Rufi reveals alcohol use of Pakistani singers

Naeem Abbas Rufi
  • Naeem Abbas Rufi is a well-known classical singer from Pakistan.
  • He recently made an appearance on Nadir Ali’s podcast.
  • He discussed how singers used to utilize hash and alcohol to enhance their voices.

Naeem Abbas Rufi is a well-known classical singer from Pakistan who gained popularity by performing well-known songs by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He performs at events all around the world and puts in lengthy live performances. His most well-known Coke Studio song was Ayaa Laariye.

He recently made an appearance on Nadir Ali’s podcast, where he discussed how singers used to utilize hash and alcohol to enhance their voices. He compared alcohol to water. He went on to say that performers frequently drink water (alcohol).

See the video!

Speaking of Pakistani singers who use drugs to bolster their voices, he said, “Some singers are using drugs (hash) for bolstering voices, but it’s their misconception that it helps bolster the throat; those singers are imitating a few big singers (from the past) who used to have a hash, but those big singers had a proper diet regimen. They didn’t utilize drugs without eating a healthy diet, after all. The hash is also bad since it dries out the throat. The other tool used by singers is healthy for the voice and throat; it’s acceptable for singers to consume alcohol (water), as it enhances the voice. Now, a lot of actors also drink water, but a lot of singers as well.”

No one applauded after Javed Akhtar’s anti-Pakistan comment at Faiz Festival

Javed Akhtar
  • The Indian media is congratulating Javed Akhtar.
  • They remarked on his statement as “dushman kay ghar mein ja kar usko marna.”
  • Akhtar claimed that Pakistanis had applauded when he made the statement.

Following the widespread circulation of his comments blaming Pakistan for not taking strong action against the terrorists responsible for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Javed Akhtar and the Indian media are congratulating themselves for “dushman kay ghar mein ja kar usko marna.”

Akhtar claimed in an interview with Hindustan Times that Pakistanis had applauded when he made the statement and agreed with him.

“They all clapped. They agreed with me. There are many people who admire India, want to have a relationship with us. We tend to think of countries as monolith. That is not the case. How do we connect with millions of people, who want to connect with India,” he said.

The full video is available on social media, thus the claim is false. After Akhtar’s remark regarding the Mumbai attacks, nobody applauded.

Another remark by the Indian poet was well-received by the audience. “We [India] have organised concerts for persons like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mehdi Hassan, but your country has not held a concert for Lata,” Javed Akhtar had said in reference to Pakistan’s lack of appreciation for Indian singers.
This claim is untrue as well, as Indian performers and artists have received some of the greatest honours from the Pakistani government and, in particular, have been invited to speak in Pakistani cities.
Pictures of the Bollywood stars and singers who had won awards in Pakistan were provided by journalist Yusra Askari.

The 7th annual International Faiz Festival was held in Lahore over the weekend in honour of poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. The event aims to promote Urdu poetry, music, literature, and drama as well as national human rights problems.
