Renowned fashion designer Hassan Sheharyar Yasin (HSY) recently appeared on a Ramadan transmission, sharing insights on the growing trend of the farshi shalwar. Contrary to restrictive fashion norms, HSY emphasized that this style is for everyone.

When asked who should avoid wearing it, he responded, “Everyone should wear it.” He explained that the farshi shalwar is an inclusive trend, allowing people to dress modestly while looking elegant. “Our women may come from different backgrounds, but they all have the same religion,” he said, adding that the garment does not reveal body curves.

Addressing concerns about pairing the shalwar with short shirts, he advised, “Wear it with a long shirt—it looks beautiful.” He suggested keeping the slit (chaak) just above the knee but adjusting it based on body shape.

HSY also shared practical tips, such as using georgette, chiffon, or thin silk for flowy shirts and opting for pure cotton for everyday shalwars. He even revealed a tailoring trick: “Adding a drawstring or embroidery at the hem helps it fall straight.”

Encouraging accessibility, he stated, “Fashion and looking beautiful is everyone’s right,” making it clear that style should be inclusive and tailored to individual needs.

Sheroo is designing the dresses for the Walima ceremony, and HSY is creating both the bride and groom’s outfits. I wanted to design my daughter-in-law’s bridal dress, but she declined, so she’s preparing the bridal outfits herself. Additionally, this time, I won’t be hosting as many functions as I did previously because the groom’s party will be traveling from Lahore to Karachi. I organized eleven functions last time, but now I will only have a Milad and Walima after the main wedding function, and that will be it.”

When asked about whom he would marry if forced at gunpoint, the designer mentioned actress Mehwish Hayat, emphasizing the importance of friendship as a key element in building a strong relationship.

HSY clarified that he and Mehwish were not romantically involved but shared a close bond as friends. They had previously collaborated on the telefilm ‘Ijaazat.’

Opening up about his childhood, HSY revealed that he learned fashion designing while growing up in a poor family by studying magazines during his visits to the grocery store where his mother worked. He would observe the designs and then try to replicate them on his old shirts at home. He stated, “My mother used to work at a grocery store and I use to go through old magazines over there. I would observe how did people design a look and when I went home, I’d take out my old shirts and try to make them like Calvin Klien or Donna Karan.”

HSY also shared that one of his fashion inspirations was the late Princess of Wales, Lady Diana, whose royal wedding he witnessed as an infant during his time in London when his mother was searching for a job. This experience left a lasting impression on him, sparking his passion for fashion design.

He said, “I was on her shoulders watching the wedding and I remember the excitement, and how millions of people were screaming for a carriage, I have never forgotten it…I remember when I got home I got my sister’s dolls, took some tissue papers and started making that dress because I was shocked how that one dress shocked so many people.”

HSY made an announcement in which he stressed that every woman has the right to look beautiful and that he hopes to make the dream come true. The announcement was labelled as a tribute to his mother, Rehana, and other brave women like her. Every brave lady can find something in HSY’s upcoming “cheap” holiday collection, which will undoubtedly lift the spirits of the ladies. For International Women’s Day on March 8, the collection will be available in retailers.
