Pakistani-American singer Arooj Aftab has once again made waves in the music world, securing two Grammy nominations for the upcoming 2025 ceremony.

Her song Raat Ki Rani has earned a nomination in the Best Global Music Performance category, while her album Night Reign is up for Best Alternative Jazz Album. This follows Aftab’s historic win in 2022, when she became the first Pakistani woman to take home a Grammy, winning the inaugural Best Global Music Performance award with her song Mohabbat.

“I’m beyond honored to be recognized again,” Aftab, 37, said, reflecting on her journey since moving to New York 15 years ago. She has steadily gained global acclaim for her unique blend of Sufi traditions, folk, jazz, and minimalism.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé is leading the pack with 11 nominations, bringing her career total to 99, the most in Grammy history. Her album Cowboy Carter is nominated for both Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year, marking her debut in the country and Americana categories. Should she win Album of the Year, she would become the first Black woman to win the award in the 21st century.

Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Taylor Swift are also among the top nominees, each earning multiple nods for their work this year, with Lamar achieving a career milestone by earning two nominations in the Best Rap Performance category.

Arooj Aftab collaborates with Vijay Iyer & Shahzad Ismaily for a music album

The well-known jazz pianist from New York, Vijay Iyer, is excited to collaborate with Pakistani-American singer Arooj Aftab on their next joint album, “Love in Exile.” Shahzad Ismaily, a synth player, is also a part of the collaboration, which Aftab first announced on social media last month. Aftab, a Pakistani musician who was born in Saudi Arabia, made history in 2022 when he became the first Pakistani musician to win a Grammy.

He also recently received the renowned Vilcek Award for Artistic Potential in Music. Iyer claims that he has known Aftab for a number of years and that they had previously collaborated numerous times starting around 2016. He explained that Ismaily’s electric bass and synthesizer prowess are featured on the album, along with Aftab’s soulful singing and his own acoustic grand piano performance.

Iyer underlined that the project is truly collaborative and that each team member is contributing their particular set of skills. His joy for the release of “Love in Exile” was increased when he said, “The three of us as human beings realised that we could create music together.”

Iyer, Aftab, and Ismaily’s upcoming joint album, “Love in Exile,” is scheduled to be released on March 24. Six songs make up the album, and “To Remain/To Return,” the first single, was previously published a month ago. Iyer said he was happy with the record, adding that, “it magnifies something special. It takes its time to unfold.” The music is quite calm and has a ritualistic feel to it, like a prayer.

In an effort to win consecutive wins, the Grammy-winning singer was nominated for “Best Global Music Performance.” Her song Udhero Na, however, fell short this time against Bayethe by Nomcebo Zikode, Zakes Bantwini, and Wouter Kellerman.

Nevertheless, the 29-year-old stole the show as she shared the stage with Anoushka Shankar and performed her smash song in front of the biggest names in the music business.

Arooj Aftab the first Grammy winner from Pakistan, has just submitted her latest song, Udhero Na, with Anoushka Shankar, for Grammy consideration.

She added the following caption to her Instagram image to give the update: “UDHERO NA’ FEATURING ANOUSHKA SHANKAR for your Grammy voting consideration in the Best Global Music Performance and Best Arrangement, Instrument, and Vocal categories.”

An additional quote from the song was also given by her: “… ankhon main silay hoay ho, udhero na…” and said” it is all about getting over your ex… must win for sure because we finally got over them”.

The Brooklyn-based soprano took home her first Grammy in April for the Best Global Performance category with her song Mohabbat. She was also a nominee in the Best New Artist category.

The 37-year-old has spent 15 years residing in New York and has steadily gained recognition for her work, which combines ancient Sufi traditions with folk, jazz, and minimalism influences.

She has so far released three albums: Bird Under Water (2014), Siren Islands (2018), and Vulture Prince (2021). Mohabbat was placed on former US president Barack Obama’s list of 2021 summertime songs to listen to, which increased interest in her music.

The Grammys will be held in Los Angeles on February 5, 2023, and the nominations will be revealed on November 15, 2022.
