What is the agenda of Boris Johnson's India visit?

When British Prime Minister Boris Johnson meets with his Indian PM, Narendra Modi, counterpart on Friday, authorities expect him to help India move away from its reliance on Russia by increasing economic and defence relations. During his meeting with Modi, Johnson is expected to bring up the situation in Ukraine.

“Our relations have never been as strong or as good between us as they are now,’’ A formal reception in the forecourt of the presidential palace in New Delhi on Friday,’ Johnson told reporters.

Johnson stated shortly after his arrival in India on Thursday that he was aware of India’s and Russia’s tight connections.

“We have to reflect that reality. But clearly, I’ll be talking about it to Narendra Modi,” he said.

According to Johnson’s tweet, the Ukraine conflict is expected to be discussed by the two leaders today.

Johnson had recently visited Ukraine and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, the country’s capital. The United Kingdom has repeatedly urged Russia to put an end to the violence.

The UK PM revealed his experience in Gujarat in a late-night tweet on Thursday, only hours after kicking off the India visit and confirming a 1 billion pound contract.

“It’s been a real pleasure to be in Gujarat today to see the fruits of the incredible partnership between the UK and our friends in India. Today we have confirmed more than £1 billion in new investments between our two great countries, creating almost 11,000 new jobs in the UK.”

Johnson is also expected to meet with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in Delhi today.

Johnson thanked India for the warm welcome in a brief address. “Thank you for the fantastic welcome…I don’t think things have ever been as strong or as good between us (India-UK) as they are now,” he said.
