Cabinet’s energy conservation to provide relief to common man: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the energy conservation plan of the federal cabinet would provide relief to the common man and save precious foreign exchange.

The prime minister in a tweet said the coalition government was diversifying the energy mix by pivoting to renewables, which he termed as key to energy security.

“The idea is to gradually but surely increase our dependence on indigenous resources,” he said.

He mentioned that the federal cabinet had given serious consideration to an energy conservation plan. The plan will be approved after taking provinces on board, he added.

“Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures,” he said. “Its effective implementation will save precious resources and help address energy crisis”.

On other hand, PM Shehbaz Sharif launched a plan of action named ‘Resilient, Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Framework’ (4RF), which will be carried out in the flood-affected areas of the country.

The copy of the 4RF report was presented to the prime minister by Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Planning Development and Special Initiatives (MoPD&SI) here in a meeting.

Ahsan Iqbal apprised the prime minister that the document was based on the loss and damage estimated in the Post Disaster Needs Assessment report, which was launched in late October this year.

The 4RF document contained short- medium- and long-term climate resilient strategy.The prime minister appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Planning Development & Special Initiatives, Development Partners, line ministries, National Disaster Management Authority, and the provincial governments for adopting a whole of Pakistan and inclusive approach in bringing out this important framework.

He congratulated the Minister and his team for their hard work.

Petition filed in LHC against nominal decrease in POL products

LAHORE: A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the slight reduction in petroleum prices and requesting the court to order the government to further decrease the prices of POL products as per the international market.

Head of the Judicial Activism Panel, Azhar Siddique, has filed a plea and stated that prices of petroleum products in the global market fell.

The petitioner said the government nominally reduced the rates of petrol and other POL products whereas the prices in the global oil market have drastically decreased recently.

He submitted that the prices of petroleum products should be reduced by 30 to 50 rupees as per the global market.

Petitioner requested the court to order the government to further reduce the prices of petroleum products.

On the other hand, Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Ishaq Dar announced that the price of petrol has been decreased by Rs10 to  reach Rs214.80 per liter for the next fortnight effective from December 16.

In a video address, the finance minister said the price reduction was made in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s aspirations of “providing maximum” relief to the masses.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that deeper engagement with the Central Asian Republics was the central plank of the government’s aims to rebuild and strengthen foreign policy that was damaged by his predecessor Imran Khan.

Shehbaz Sharif, who returned home yesterday after concluding his visit to Kazakhstan where he participated in Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), said his meetings highlighted Pakistan as a credible partner.

 

“In all my interactions with world leaders, I am forcefully presenting Pakistan as a credible partner ready to do business,” he said in a tweet.

The prime minister said after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting last month, the day-long CICA Summit in Astana helped bring Pakistan’s focus back on energy, trade, and regional connectivity.

“South and Central Asia have distinct advantages that we plan to leverage for win-win outcomes,” he said.

During his stay in Astana, the prime minister addressed the world leaders at the plenary meeting of CICA, where he elaborated on the significance of the forum aimed at promoting interaction, understanding, and collaboration amongst countries across Asia.

The prime minister in his speech highlighted Pakistan’s perspective on regional and global issues.

PM Sharif said, “Flood-affected 33 million people including 1,600 dead and inflicting a huge loss of $30 billion to the national economy.

“The government had disbursed Rs 42 billion to the flood-affected people as part of relief and rehabilitation activities,” he mentioned.

The prime minister said, “Pakistan alone could not overcome the challenge of massive floods and called upon the world to amplify its assistance to Pakistan.”

He expressed gratitude to the philanthropists for providing relief assistance to Pakistan in the hour of need. He assured the flood-hit people that the government would leave no stone unturned in extending help to them.

Flanked by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and senior officials of the provincial government, the prime minister visited the tent city where he was given a detailed briefing on the damage caused by floods.

PM Sharif was apprised that floods affected all areas of district Dadu, leaving 37 persons dead while damaging its infrastructure and crops.

During his interaction with patients at the medical camp, the prime minister inquired about their health and assured them of the best possible treatment. He directed the authorities concerned to ensure the availability of necessary medicine at the camp to cope with the emerging challenge of malaria, diarrhea, and other epidemics and breakouts.

The prime minister also visited a makeshift school set up on the premises of the tent city aimed at preventing the loss of education of the students after the floods swept away their schools.

He announced the occasion construction of a smart school for the children of the area equipped with latest technological facilities.

According to the details, the historic meeting between the heads of the states will be held in Samarkand on September 15 and 16. During the summit, the members of SCO will discuss the strategic problems of the region, climate change and challenges faced by the countries, and energy reforms for the members of SCO.

During the SCO Summit Samarkand, agreements between the SCO members will be approved, which will determine the direction of the future of the region. Moreover, the Premier of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to meet the heads of the states, including the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

PM Shehbaz will attend the meeting at the invitation of the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev,

Furthermore, the most awaited meeting of Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin is also expected during the Summit.

During the briefing at Mardan Bridge, the authorities concerned apprised him of the ongoing rescue and relief operations as well as other facilities being provided to the displaced people at the relief camps.

Sewerage system has collapsed, and the infrastructure has been damaged.” Shireen Rehman ensured that, after sending recommendations to the PM, a special relief package will be announced soon for the victims.

During her visit to Thatta, she further expressed that the crop fields and bridges were also damaged by torrential rains. According to the details, the Climate Change Minister told the media that after the complete inspection, a complete report would be sent to the PM about the devastation that emerged from the floods.

GILGIT: Former chief minister of Gilgit Baltistan Hafizur Rehman had a telephonic talk with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the situation of Gilgit Baltistan and the road blockage by the protesters, BOL News reports.

According to the report, the people in Gilgit Baltistan are out of their homes for the past ten days for 14 people who are accused of assisting terrorism in the province. The former GB CM told the prime minister that the current government is not helping the people in this matter.

“Thousands of tourists are worried about the closure of roads throughout the province and the Gilgit-Skardu Road and Hunza Road are also blocked. The selected government has failed to listen to the concerns of the protesters and come out with a solution.” Hafiz ur Rehman told PM.
