Trevor Noah slams royalists who are pressurizing people to mourn the death of Queen

Trevor Noah
  • Trevor Noah slammed royalists for pressuring individuals to grieve Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
  • The comedian claimed that some royalists were becoming angry in a very dumb way with individuals who did not share their mourning.
  • The comedian was talking about the on-going debate over the Queen’s death.

Trevor Noah lambasted royalists for pressuring individuals “oppressed by the British Crown” to grieve Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

The comedian claimed that some royalists were becoming “angry” in a “very dumb way” with individuals who did not share their level of mourning over the Queen’s death.

He stated that “you can’t ask people to show respect for something that has never respected them,” and that forcing people to do something they don’t want to do is “recolonizing.”

In a viral video clip from The Daily Show, Noah said, “What was fascinating to me was seeing how angry some people were that not everybody had the same opinion of the queen and how much they wanted other people to have that. In a really ignorant way to be honest, you know.”

“I’m shocked that people want others who were under the British Empire to share the same level of mourning,” he added. “Why would they do it? People are like ‘show some respect, this person died.’ And people are like ‘so what?’ Like everywhere, you know what I mean, all over Africa, all over India, there are so many places where people go, ‘but do you know the British Empire did to us.’”

“And people are like, ‘that’s somebody’s grandmother, show some reverence’ and I actually found it interesting because you know what it is? Most of the time, it’s not about respecting the person or what they’ve done or what they have.

“In a weird way, it’s that people have this strange reverence for fame. It’s that a famous person has gone and so everyone must respect them regardless of what the famous person is famous for.

Further talking about the on-going debate, the television show host said, “You can’t say to people who have been oppressed by the British Crown that they should not in some way shape or form say whatever they want.”

“You can’t expect people to show respect for something that never respected them,” Noah added. “You can say ‘hey, this is my queen, I still love what she represents. That’s your queen but don’t expect everybody else to now adopt.”

“Because basically what you’re doing is recolonizing the people and saying ‘this is who you support, this is who you cheer for,’” the comedian said. “No, you do your mourning and they’ll live their lives. Long live the King.”

“Us paying respect to our Queen.”

The father-of-four added: “I grew up in a household of royalists and I was brought up that way.

“Granny, while this final parting brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first meetings—from my earliest childhood memories with you, to meeting you for the first time as my Commander-in-Chief, to the first moment you met my darling wife and hugged your beloved great-grandchildren. I cherish these times shared with you, and the many other special moments in between. You are already sorely missed, not just by us, but by the world over. And as it comes to first meetings, we now honour my father in his new role as King Charles III,” he wrote.

  • Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday at the age of 96.
  • John: I’m glad she’s at rest, and she deserves it. She worked bloody hard.

Elton John paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II during his show in Toronto on Thursday.

Queen Elizabeth died on Thursday at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

“She led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace and decency and genuine caring,” John said.

“I’m 75, and she’s been with me all my life, and I feel very sad that she won’t be with me anymore, but I’m glad she’s at peace,” he said. “I’m glad she’s at rest, and she deserves it. She worked bloody hard.”

Elton John paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth during his Toronto show Thursday night after her death was publicly announced.

Following his address, John performed “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”

The show was the second of two nights in Toronto’s Rogers Centre, and it was part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which was billed as his final tour.

The queen knighted John in 1998, a year after his friend Princess Diana died. Last year, Prince Charles appointed the musician and charity patron to the Order of the Companions of Honor.

The “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” singer also shared a tribute to Queen Elizabeth on his social media account after the royal family publicly announced her death.

“Along with the rest of the nation, I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s passing.

“She was an inspiring presence to be around, and led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine caring warmth.

“Queen Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her dearly,” he concluded.

Queen Elizabeth II was predeceased by her husband, Prince Philip, who supported the monarch for more than seven decades.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Britain’s longest-serving consort, died at the age of 99 in April 2021. Elizabeth and Philip had four children during their 70-year marriage: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

Elizabeth was the most travelled British head of state and the longest-married British monarch when she died. She had reigned for the longest period of time in British history, becoming a well-loved and revered figure over her decades-long reign. She will celebrate her 70th year on the throne on February 6, 2022, with the Platinum Jubilee in June.
