China to resume all travel with Hong Kong and Macau

China
  • China announced on Friday that cross-border travel between the mainland, and Hong Kong.
  • Macau would fully resume on February 6.
  • Three border crossings in Hong Kong have not yet been reopened.

China announced on Friday that cross-border travel between the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau would fully resume on February 6, eliminating current quotas and doing away with the requirement to take the COVID-19 test in order to travel.

The number of customs checkpoints open will increase to pre-pandemic levels, and group travel between China and its two special administrative areas of Hong Kong and Macau will resume, according to a statement on the website of China’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office.

There is still a COVID-19 testing requirement and a quota system in place for travellers between the mainland and Hong Kong even after China reopened its borders to the outside world on January 8. Three border crossings in Hong Kong have not yet been reopened.

China made its decision a day after Hong Kong began a promotion push with 500,000 free flights to entice travellers, companies, and investors back to the financial centre following more than three years of strict COVID controls.

In an effort to fend off COVID, Hong Kong was largely closed off behind closed borders for much of the past three years, with required quarantine of up to three weeks for visitors as well as stringent testing and screening.

The ex-colony of Britain adhered strictly to China’s zero-COVID policy until the middle of 2022, at which point it started to progressively relax its regulations.

The majority of Hong Kong’s COVID regulations remained in place until December, however mask use is still required when exercising and students are required to perform daily quick antigen testing.

CBD is prohibited in Hong Kong, where it ranks with heroin and cocaine

Hong Kong
  • Importing, exporting, or producing CBD is forbidden in Hong Kong now.
  • Possession or consumption might result in a seven-year prison sentence.
  • CBD is legal in the United States, sections of Europe, and certain Asian countries, including Japan and Thailand.

HONG KONG – A new law in Hong Kong that criminalizes the possession, consumption, and sale of cannabidiol (CBD) went into force on Wednesday, putting the substance on par with heroin in terms of legal classification.

Users of CBD, a non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, claim that it relieves pain, tension, anxiety, and inflammation.

Hong Kong officials, on the other hand, have stated that the claims “lack authoritative scientific support” and have justified their ban by claiming that the items might be transformed into the psychoactive component THC, which is already outlawed in the city.

Importing, exporting, or producing CBD, which joins more than 200 other “dangerous medicines” forbidden in the territory, is punishable by life imprisonment and a fine of up to HK$5 million ($638,000).

Possession or consumption might result in a seven-year prison sentence and a HK$1 million ($128,000) fine.

CBD-infused goods have grown in popularity in recent years, with gummies, coffee, beers, and cosmetic creams all contributing to a sector that is estimated to be worth $47 billion by 2028, up from $4.9 billion in 2021.

CBD is legal in the United States, sections of Europe, and certain Asian countries, including Japan and Thailand.

Authorities in Hong Kong gave businesses and residents three months to dispose of any possible contraband before the stringent penalties went into force on Wednesday.

Take a step back

According to official data, around 77,400 things have been offloaded at government bins as of Sunday.

Customs officials warned shoppers last week to be wary of products emblazoned with hemp leaves, and on Wednesday, full-page newspaper advertisements stated: “Is there anything with CBD in it? No way!”

The new laws have had an impact on vendors in the recession-hit financial hub, pushing some to close completely.

“We had to cease selling a best-selling beer, and we still receive customers phoning to ask about the product on a regular basis,” said Chris Wong, co-founder of the HK Brewcraft store.

When it launched in 2020, Cafe Found advertised itself as the first in the city to provide a variety of CBD-infused dishes and drinks, while Yardley Brothers Craft Brewery stated it was compelled to discontinue a popular line.

“It feels like a step backward for HK,” the company’s founder, Luke Yardley, told.

While many countries have legalized the substance, mainland China will outlaw it in 2021.

Billionaire Jack Ma to give up control of China’s Ant group

Jack Ma
  • Jack Ma indirectly owned 53.46% of his shares.
  • he will only possess 6.2% of the voting rights after the adjustment.
  • The adjustment will not change the economic interests of any shareholders.

BEIJING: In response to a Communist Party assault on the country’s internet sector that singled out the flamboyant billionaire, Jack Ma will cede leadership of Chinese fintech behemoth Ant Group, the business announced on Saturday.

Ma, one of China‘s most well-known businessmen, once exemplified a generation of Chinese technology moguls with his rags-to-riches personal story and fondness for public spectacle.

However, the former English teacher has withdrawn from the public eye after Beijing destroyed Ant’s anticipated IPO in Hong Kong in 2020 as a result of his scathing remarks about government regulators.

In a statement released on Saturday, his business announced changes to its ownership structure that would prevent “any shareholder, acting alone or in concert with other parties, from exercising control over Ant Group.”

The notice outlined the company’s previous complicated organizational structure and stated that Ant was the “control person” because Ma indirectly owned 53.46% of his shares.

Based on the information in the statement, he will only possess 6.2% of the voting rights after the adjustment.

The Ant statement stated that the modification was made to further improve the stability of the company’s corporate structure and the sustainability of its long-term growth.

Ten individuals — including the founder, management, and staff — will “exercise their voting rights independently”, it said.

The adjustment will not change the economic interests of any shareholders.
