Sindh to launch special polio drive in high-risk UCs of Karachi from tomorrow

Raises concern over rising polio cases in Sindh

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh, in collaboration with its partners, is launching a targeted polio vaccination campaign, the first phase of which is in 27 high-risk union councils of Karachi from February 22nd, to strengthen children’s immunity and curb the transmission of the poliovirus.

This first phase of the campaign aims to vaccinate 562,163 children under the age of five with Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) and administer Fractional Inactivated Polio Vaccine (fIPV) to 521,953 children aged 4 months to under 5 years using painless jet injector technology.

As Pakistan’s largest and most densely populated city, Karachi remains a crucial battleground in the fight against polio. The city’s frequent population movement contributes to the persistent presence of poliovirus in environmental samples.

Despite repeated vaccination efforts, transmission risks remain high, making targeted campaigns essential to closing immunity gaps and protecting children from lifelong paralysis.

The use of painless jet injector technology for fIPV administration ensures a needle-free, stress-free experience for children. The combination of OPV and fIPV further strengthens immunity, offering additional protection in areas where the virus continues to circulate. Recently, in August 2024, an f-IPV campaign was successfully conducted in Karachi.

Speaking about the urgency of this campaign, Irshad Ali Sodhar, Provincial Coordinator of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Sindh, stated:

“Karachi remains one of the most critical areas for polio eradication due to continuous virus detection in environmental samples.

This campaign is a crucial step in boosting children’s immunity and ensuring no child is left vulnerable. We urge all parents to cooperate with vaccinators and ensure their children receive both OPV and fIPV doses. Every vaccination brings us closer to a polio-free future.”

The Government of Sindh remains committed to protecting every child from polio. Parents and caregivers are strongly urged to cooperate with polio teams and ensure their children receive the vaccine during this lifesaving campaign.

Japan sees surge in Chinese tourists for this unusual reason

Japan
  • An unexpected winter activity is gaining popularity in Japan.
  • Snow shoveling turned into an exciting attraction for tourists.
  • During the Spring Festival holiday, Japan saw a surge in tourists.

Japan continues to be a favorite destination for global travelers, and an unexpected winter activity is gaining popularity—snow shoveling. What locals consider a chore has turned into an unusual but exciting attraction for tourists, particularly visitors from China.

During the Spring Festival holiday in January and February, Japan saw a surge in Chinese tourists, with 7.7 million entry-exit trips recorded, according to Xinhua News. While shopping sprees, or bakugai (“explosive buying”), remain popular, more travelers are opting for immersive experiences. Among these, snow shoveling has become a surprising trend, reported the South China Morning Post.

In Sapporo, Hokkaido—one of the world’s snowiest cities—a local tour agency, Tobu Top Tours, has introduced a snow-shoveling package. For 250,000 yen (₹1.4 lakh), groups of up to six can ride in a snow removal vehicle and participate in clearing snow.

Online reactions have been mixed. A Japanese user on X praised the idea, calling its creator “a genius.” Others pointed out that “experiencing snow shoveling is entirely different from being paid to remove snow.” Meanwhile, a Chinese tourist remarked, “Many people from southern China have hardly seen snow. This experience is refreshing and enjoyable, and it can also serve as a good workout.”

‘Unnecessary Gossip:’ Kashaf Ali breaks silence on her dating rumors with Saim Ayub

Kashaf Ali
  • Kashaf Ali has responded to speculation linking her with Saim Ayub.
  • She called the rumors “baseless” and “unnecessary gossip.”
  • It began after a video of the two went viral.

Instagram influencer Kashaf Ali has responded to speculation linking her with cricketer Saim Ayub, dismissing the rumors as “baseless” and “unnecessary gossip.”

The rumors began after a video of the two spending time together in London went viral. The clip, which showed them chatting and taking selfies at a bowling alley, led to widespread speculation about their relationship.

Addressing the controversy on Instagram, Kashaf criticized the media and the public for focusing on trivial matters. “There are so many real issues in our country, yet people choose to talk about things that don’t even matter,” she remarked, adding that the video was being blown out of proportion.

She further expressed frustration over the assumptions made about her and Saim. “You don’t even know the person in the video, just like you don’t know me. It’s crazy how people create stories based on assumptions,” she said.

Shutting down the gossip, she urged people to focus on more significant matters. “There’s really nothing to talk about. People should focus on real issues instead of making drama out of nothing,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Saim Ayub, 22, is currently in London recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out of the ICC Champions Trophy. His presence in the UK, combined with Kashaf’s social media activity, fueled further speculation.

This isn’t the first time Saim has been in the spotlight for non-cricketing reasons. Earlier, he faced backlash for ignoring a journalist at a charity event in London, sparking debate online.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West reunite for sake of their children

Kim Kardashian
  • The ex-celebrity couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reunited.
  • She also recalled her conversation with West.
  • She expressed their desire to see the kids have ‘the best’ in life.

The Hollywood ex-celebrity couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reunited to back their daughter, North, who performed at the Lion King concert event. North’s performance was captured on the episode of The Kardashians, which aired on February 20.

Kim revealed that West was with her in the dressing room when North was preparing for her performance, saying, “Her dad has been involved and he came to rehearsal.”

Kim almost had a heart attack backstage the moment her daughter sang “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” at the event due to her concerns for North.

She also recalled her conversation with West when he asked her whether it was possible to “change the graphics.” In response, Kim said, “Of course, of course. And I just look at them and I’m like, ‘It will be a better production [if you take his notes].”

She expressed her and her ex-husband’s desire to see the kids have ‘the best’ in life. “Kanye and I want the best for the kids and so anytime we’re here supporting our child, it’s always good vibes.”

North held the hands of her parents while she was standing between them, forming a prayer circle shortly before she went to the stage.

After North’s performance, Kim and West applauded her when she admitted that she was praying every second to hit the correct notes. West told her that she did “so good.”

Kim and West’s other children were also present backstage to laud North as she concluded her performance.

Kim called it a proud moment, stating, “It’s such a proud moment as a mom to see your child have so much fun and not be nervous at all.”

Earlier, Kim spoke about the discussions of her and West on social media in an episode of The Kardashians. “I think at this point, I just assume everything I text Kanye is gonna be put on the internet,” she asserted.

She added, “Even through all of the craziness of everything that Kanye says about us, I never comment, I never post.”

“We stay silent, we stay silent through all the lies. Even how he looks so down on me for my [sex] tape, brings it up all over town, all over the media. Like, thanks for reminding people once again,” she revealed.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian parted ways after seven years of marriage, filing for divorce in 2021.

Sean Diddy seeks dismissal of charge, citing racial bias in law

Sean Diddy
  • Sean Diddy is seeking to have one of the charges against him dismissed.
  • He argued that the law used in the indictment unfairly targets black men.
  • The Mann Act has a very long history.

Sean “Diddy” Combs is seeking to have one of the charges against him dismissed, with his attorneys arguing that the law used in the indictment unfairly targets black men.

In a September indictment, Combs was charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. His legal team is working to have the third charge—based on the Mann Act of 1910—dropped.

The Mann Act, originally called the White-Slave Traffic Act, has a controversial history. Combs’ lawyers argue that it has “racist origins”, citing past cases involving boxer Jack Johnson and musician Chuck Berry. “Mr. Combs has been singled out because he is a powerful Black man, and he is being prosecuted for conduct that regularly goes unpunished,” his attorneys wrote in their motion, obtained by PEOPLE.

Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after being denied bail by three different federal judges. His indictment revolves around alleged “freak offs”, which authorities claim were orchestrated events where women were coerced into sex acts.

Combs has also been named in multiple lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct, all of which he has denied. His criminal trial is set for May.

Pakistan urges well-defined plan to address Libya’s political deadlock

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has urged UN’s diplomatic officials in Libya to formulate a “well-defined” peace building and reconciliation strategy aimed at overcoming the political impasse that would put the country back on the path to long-awaited presidential elections and unifying institutions.

“We encourage all Libyan stakeholders to constructively address all outstanding issues through meaningful dialogue, paving the way for the unification of all institutions,” Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, told the United Nations Security Council on the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Fourteen years after the overthrow of Qaddafi regime, the North African country has remained split between two rival administrations for over a decade, with the internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) based in the northwest while the Government of National Stability (GNS) is in the east.

Landmark elections scheduled for December 2021 were cancelled, including due to disputes over the eligibility of candidates.

At the outset of his remarks, Ambassador Akram welcomed the appointment of Hanna Tetteh, a Ghanian barrister and diplomat, as the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) for Libya, and hoped that, given her rich experience, especially in the region, she will help to deliver concrete results for peace and stability in the strife-torn country.

“A Libyan-led and Libyan-owned process is the only path towards sustainable peace and stability,” the Pakistani envoy told delegates.

“The political reconciliation process should offer peace dividends to all citizens and focus on securing an equitable distribution of national resources”.

In this regard, he highlighted the reported agreement between Eastern and Western security institutions to establish a joint centre for communication and information exchange.

Noting that these are preliminary steps, he added “This will need a well-defined comprehensive peace building and reconciliation strategy to fast-track the transition towards inclusive elections and sustainable peace.”

When Karan Johar told SOTY crew to treat film cast as ‘megastars’

Karan Johar
  • Karan Johar has introduced several new faces to Bollywood.
  • Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra are among them.
  • Karan shared how he ensured the debutants exuded confidence.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has introduced several new faces to Bollywood, but his most notable discoveries remain the Student of the Year trio—Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra. Recently, on Komal Nahta’s podcast Game Changers, Karan shared how he ensured the debutants exuded confidence on set.

Karan recalled his first interactions with the three and revealed that he never treated them as newcomers. “I won’t lie. For me, it was just that I told my team—Sidharth and Varun, these two were my assistants, and I met Alia for the first time when she came from school. And when I launched them, I told everyone on the set, the choreographer, the production, the designer, to treat these three like megastars,” he said.

When the crew questioned his reasoning, Karan explained, “They asked what it meant. I said, ‘If you give them that confidence, they will face the camera like stars. If you treat them like newcomers, they will give you the performance of newcomers.’ And they performed like stars.”

Student of the Year (2012) was a box-office hit, earning over ₹100 crore. The film catapulted Alia, Varun, and Sidharth to stardom. A sequel featuring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday, and Tara Sutaria followed in 2019.
