Federal Govt terminates contracts with five IPPs: PM

Federal Govt

ISLAMABAD: The government announced the termination of the power purchase agreement with five Independent Power Producers (IPPs) which Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said would provide Rs60 billion annual relief to the electricity consumers and cumulatively save Rs411 billion to the national exchequer.

The prime minister, in his remarks at the meeting of the federal cabinet he chaired, said the termination of agreements, signed between the Task Force on Power Sector Reforms and IPPs owners, was part of the efforts to reduce the burden of capacity payments being borne by the consumers and that it would also reduce the electricity prices.

“The owners of five IPPs agreed to terminate the contracts preferring the national interest to their own. This is the first raindrop. This will follow the rain to green the whole region,” he remarked and thanked his team members including the task force on power sector reforms, President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of the Army Staff for their efforts and PML-N president Nawaz Sharif for constant push.

He told the cabinet members that the power tariff would be reduced after a gradual review of contracts with other IPPs.

Under the agreement, the IPPs whose contracts had been terminated including Rousch Power, Saba Power, LALPIR, HUBCO and Atlas Power, would be liable to receive their arrears sans mark-up.

It was told that the Rousch Power unit was established under the Build, Own and Operate (BOP) basis, so its ownership would be transferred to the government for its onward privatisation by the Privatisation Commission. The ownership of the rest four IPPs would remain with their respective owners and after the contract termination, the government would not be liable to pay any charges.

Expressing gratitude to the people who faced the inflation with patience, said the time had come to address their woes and mentioned the reduced inflation from 30% to 6.9% – a target achieved within seven months, far before the commitment for 2025.

He said the economy was improving fast and the government had made untiring efforts to fulfill its manifesto of public relief.

He also mentioned the federal government’s Rs50 billion subsidy for power consumers using up to 200 units and the other announced by Punjab government to support those using 201 to 500 units during the summer.

Deepika Padukone on how negative comments she received motivated her

Deepika Padukone
  • Deepika Padukone opened up about the criticism she faced.
  • Her accent and diction were the target of public criticism.
  • She revealed how public backlash motivated her.

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who made her acting debut alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om (2007), recently opened up about the criticism she faced for her accent and diction during her early career.

Despite the film’s success, Deepika was judged for her voice and language skills. Reflecting on that period, she spoke about dealing with “negativity” when she first entered the industry, particularly after the release of the Singham Again trailer, where similar comments have resurfaced.

Farah Khan, the director of Om Shanti Om, also shared insights about Deepika’s initial challenges. In a previous interview with Komal Nahta, Farah admitted that Deepika’s voice was “really bad then,” noting that the actress’ diction needed improvement. However, she praised Deepika’s on-screen presence, saying, “Her face would light up when she used to do songs,” emphasizing how expressive the actress was during musical sequences.

Farah also revealed that Deepika’s voice in the film was dubbed by another artist due to her diction issues, even though the rest of the film used sync sound. “She was doing diction classes, not very seriously. But she was doing dance class, diction class, Anupam Kher’s acting school. I enrolled her in everything,” Farah said, adding, “We were properly training her.”

On the professional front, Deepika will next appear in Singham Again, set to release on November 1, 2024, alongside Ajay Devgn.

Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan, known for his box office hits and versatility, is facing unexpected backlash with his upcoming film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.

As the sequel to his successful 2022 horror-comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, fans were eagerly awaiting the new installment. However, many moviegoers expressed their dissatisfaction and criticized Aaryan’s performance as well as the overall caliber of the film when the trailer dropped online.

Returning to the role of Rooh Baba in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Aaryan has come under fire from several internet users for allegedly “cringe overacting.” The excitement fans had hoped for was not even sparked by Vidya Balan’s return as Manjulika. Along with Triptii Dimri, who plays Aaryan’s love interest, the trailer also introduced Madhuri Dixit as another Manjulika, performing a rendition of the famous Dola Re Dola from Devdas (2002).

Many netizens voiced their concerns on social media. One user shared, “Sorry @TheAaryanKartik I m ur big fan But this time I think director Anees want to finish ur career. #BhoolBhulaiyaa3 will be disaster. • He frequently started getting up in the middle of the night.
  • He faced the anxiety consistently which forced him to seek help.

Actor Imran Khan, known for his roles in hit rom-com movies, opened up about his unexpected struggle with anxiety and depression.

Khan revealed that the problem began when he frequently started to wake up in the middle of the night without knowing the reason behind it. “I didn’t consider seeking help then,” Khan admits.

Moreover, he was forced to seek guidance from a mental health expert due to the anxiety he was facing consistently.

Last seen in Katti Batti (2015), Khan took a break from acting to focus on his mental health. He recalls that a decade ago, discussing mental health was still taboo. “People, in general, didn’t have an attitude of acceptance. Today’s generation has embraced the idea of mental health care. Their sympathy is mind-blowing,” Khan says, adding that conversations about therapy are now more open and supportive, compared to the judgment that used to prevail.

Khan feels lucky, especially because no one in his close circle has ever stigmatized his journey with mental health. “My mother is a practising psychoanalyst, so I had a very clear perspective about mental health. Khan concluded, “Happiness is a strange word… the question is, do you feel like getting out of bed in the morning and doing stuff?” He concludes that while not always happy, he is in a much healthier emotional and psychological state now.

Fawad Khan
  • Mishi Khan disapproved of Fawad Khan working with Vaani Kapoor.
  • Mishi took to Instagram to express her outrage.
  • She criticized him for accepting an Indian project.

Mishi Khan, a former Pakistani actress, has expressed her strong disapproval of superstar Fawad Khan’s choice to work with actress Vaani Kapoor from India in their upcoming film, Abir Gulal.

Mishi took to Instagram to express her outrage at Fawad for taking on a role with a lesser-known Indian actress while declining to collaborate with well-known Pakistani actresses.

Here is what she said:

Fawad last starred in an Indian movie in 2016’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. He rose to fame in Bollywood with his 2014 breakthrough performance in Khoobsurat. Pakistani artists have since been prohibited from performing in Bollywood due to the growing tensions between India and Pakistan.

In October, shooting of the eagerly awaited film Abir Gulal started in London and the surrounding areas. Production is scheduled to last through November. The movie will be released either in early 2026 or late 2025.

The film explores “the journey of two individuals who unintentionally help each other heal, with love blossoming as an unexpected consequence,” according to director Aarti S. Bagdi. Producers expressed excitement, stating, “Fawad has a massive global fan base, and we anticipate that audiences will wholeheartedly embrace this film.”

Malaika Arora and Ridhi Dogra are two other cast members that have been rumored to be joining the production next month.
