According to the National Assembly Secretariat, Dr Farooq Sattar became the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Privatization and Amin ul Haq became the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) .

The Secretariat said that Javed Hanif will be the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Commerce and Hafizuddin Awan Advocate will lead the Standing Committee on Industries and Production.

ISLAMABAD: Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam on Saturday condemned the United States (US) Congress for passing a resolution concerning Pakistan’s elections.

In a statement, he criticized the US, saying, “Among the wonders of modern ignorance is that a country prevents ceasefire resolutions by veto and supports the genocide of the people of Gaza by providing all kinds of lethal weapons to the Zionist regime. Yet, the Congress of this country passes a resolution questioning the nationwide election in an independent member of the United Nations (UN).”

He further described the US Congress resolution as an interference in the domestic affairs of an independent UN member, calling it “a sort of extortion under the guise of supporting democracy.”

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed his appreciation for the recognition given to Cyberknife, a Radiation Oncology service at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Karachi by the Royal College of Radiologists, United Kingdom.

He sees this award as a testament to the hard work and commitment of his government to the health sector as well as to the people of the province.

The Cyberknife- Radiation Oncology services at JPMC Karachi have been honoured by “The Royal College of Radiologists” in the United Kingdom.

This recognition is a matter of great pride for the province of Sindh and Pakistan, as it signifies the acknowledgement of free cancer treatment facility provided through a public-private partnership between the Government of Sindh and the Patients Aid Foundation at JPMC Karachi by The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) UK.

The RCR was established in 1897 with the invention of X-ray radiation and the establishment of the Roentgen Society. It has the largest number of fellows worldwide, serving as Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists.

The Honorary Fellowship by the RCR is the most prestigious award given to a non-Fellow of the College. Only 78 individuals worldwide have been honoured with this award.

On Friday, 28th June 2024, it was awarded to Prof. Dr Tariq Mahmood at Central Hall Westminster, London. The citation highlighted his work in the field of radiology and radiation oncology in Pakistan.

Dr. Tariq Mahmood, Professor Emeritus, Radiation Oncology, JPMC, is the first Pakistani and first Muslim Professor in the world to receive this most prestigious award.

Prof. Mahmood extended his gratitude to the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah and Minister of Health Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho for the donation of a new top-of-the-line Cyberknife S7 unit and to the donors of Patients Aid Foundation for another Tomotherapy X9 unit.”

Since 2012, JPMC has been the only centre in the world to offer free treatment of cancer with Cyberknife and Tomotherapy, regardless of nationality, religion, or ethnicity.

Pakistani researchers win prestigious UK Award for outstanding team impact

ISLAMABAD: A team of researchers from the University of Karachi (UoK) has been honoured with the prestigious “Outstanding Team Impact Prize” by the UK’s Medical Research Council (MRC).

The award recognized the team’s collaborative approach to medical research, which has made a significant impact in the field.

Led by Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, a Mustafa (pbuh) Prize Laureate, and Prof. Dr. Sammer Yousuf, the team from the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry and Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, ICCBs, UoK, was recognised for their research outcomes from the “A Global Network of Tropical Neglected Diseases (NTD)” project.

This international project, funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) from the MRC and led by Durham University, UK, brings together leading scientists from the UK, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Pakistan to combat protozoan NTDs, specifically leishmaniasis and Chagas disease.

The award highlighted the team’s success in integrating diverse expertise from various scientific backgrounds, exemplified by Prof. Choudhary’s leadership.

This achievement not only recognised the team’s contributions but also brought pride to Pakistan’s academic and scientific community.

Sindh Govt imposes ban on pillion riding from 9 to 10 Muharram

KARACHI: Sindh Home Department has imposed Section 144 from 1st Muharram to 10th Muharram in the province.

The Provincial Home Department has imposed Section 144 throughout the province during Muharram, the notification of which has also been issued.

According to the notification, taking out processions and rallies without permission will be prohibited during Muharram and the ban will be applied from 1st Muharram to 10th Muharram, while pillion riding of motorcycles will be prohibited on 9th and 10th Muharram.

However, the ban shall not be applicable on women, children below the age of 12 years, senior citizens, differently abled persons, journalists, personnel of law enforcement agencies and private security agencies in uniform, and employees of essential services.

The Home Department said that during Muharram, display of weapons and flying of drones will also be banned.

LHC issues SOPs to stop interference of agencies in judiciary

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC)  has directed the PM Office to instruct all the civil and military agencies including the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to not contact any member of the judiciary.

Lahore High Court Justice Shahid Karim issued a 4-page written interim order in the case of harassment of an Anti-Terrorism (ATC) judge.

Justice Shahid Karim has issued 5-point SOPs to prevent interference in the Judiciary. It has been said that the Prime Minister’s Office should issue instructions to all civil and military agencies, including the Inter-Services Intelligence(ISI)  and Intelligence Bureau(IB). The agencies should not contact any judge of the superior or subordinate judiciary or their staff in future.

In the judgment, it has been said that the IG Punjab should also issue instructions to stop the subordinate officers from interfering in the judiciary. He remarked that for the security of the ATC courts and a decision should be taken by consultation and consensus with the concerned judge.

In the verdict of the Lahore High Court, it has been said that the ATC judges should record every call in their mobile phones, and the special anti-terrorism courts of Punjab should decide the May 9 cases on priority basis.

Justice Shahid Karim appointed Hina Hafeezullah as judicial assistant and ordered the judicial staff to fully cooperate in the investigation on the case of ATC judge Sargodha and also asked the investigating court staff to record the video of the investigation and provide to high court.
