IHC, LHC serve notices to PEMRA on court reporting ban

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) and Lahore High Court (LHC) served a notices to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) over ban on court coverage.

Islamabad High Court Journalists Association had challenged PEMRA notification, Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq issued a written hearing order on the petition against PEMRA notification of not reporting court proceedings.

The Islamabad High Court has issued a notice to PEMRA on a plea against ban on reporting of court proceedings and restrained PEMRA from taking disciplinary action against TV channels.

The court has adjourned further hearing on the petition against the PEMRA notification till May 28.

It should be noted that the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists(PFUJ) has also challenged the PEMRA notification in the Islamabad High Court.

On the other hand, a notice has been issued asking PEMRA to respond on May 29 to the petition against the ban on media coverage of court proceedings in the Lahore High Court.

ISLAMABAD: As the country observed the first International Day of the Markhor on Friday (May 24), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for the efforts to protect the national animal of Pakistan and other species which enrich the planet’s biodiversity

The prime minister, in his message to the nation said, “Let us work together to protect not only the Markhor but all species that enrich our planet’s biodiversity. By doing so, we secure a sustainable future for generations to come.”

He called upon all Pakistanis and the international community to reaffirm their commitment to environmental conservation. “Today, as we celebrate the first International Day of the Markhor, the national animal of Pakistan, we take pride in the majestic creature that symbolizes our rich natural heritage,” he remarked.

The prime minister said that the Markhor, with its unique corkscrew-shaped horns, represented Pakistan’s commitment to preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. He said the day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on May 2nd, 2024, acknowledged the nation’s efforts and successes in wildlife conservation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said that the significant increase in the Markhor population over the past decade was a testament to Pakistan’s dedication to protecting its natural environment. He said that the country’s conservation programs, supported by local communities and guided by scientific research, had shown that with collective effort, the decline of endangered species can be reversed.

“Pakistan, as a committed signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), proudly announced its significant elevation to CITES Category I. This elevation is a testament to the nation’s unwavering dedication to wildlife conservation and the sustainable management of our natural resources.”

43 Pakistani prisoners in Sri Lanka to return home

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s success on the diplomatic front will bring 43 Pakistani citizens back to their homes from Siri Lankan jails.

In a high-level meeting on Friday with the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Admiral (Retd) Ravindra Chandra Srivijay Gunaratne, it was agreed to immediately repatriate 43 Pakistani citizens imprisoned in Sri Lanka.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had been working with the Sri Lankan authorities for the past month to bring back these prisoners.

The Sri Lankan High Commissioner assured all possible cooperation in this regard. Interior Minister Monsin Naqvi thanked the Sri Lankan High Commissioner for his support for the repatriation of the prisoners.

The arrangements for the return of Pakistani prisoners will be finalised in a few days, Mohsin Naqvi said in his statement.

The minister said that relations between Sri Lanka and Pakistan have been going from strength to strength over the past seven decades. He said that Pakistan wants to further develop mutual relations in various fields with Siri Lanka.

In the meeting, it was agreed to take immediate steps to return the prisoners of both countries to their country. Issues of mutual interest and the development of bilateral relations were also discussed in the meeting.

Both sides agreed to increase cooperation in the field of security and counter-narcotics.
