PMD predicts rain, snowfall in western and upper parts of country

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) has predicted rain, thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills in western and Upper parts of country From February 08 to 10.

According to the PMD, a westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country on 08th (night), and likely to grip upper parts of country on 09th Feb and may persist over northern areas till 10th February.

Under the influence of this weather system, rainfall and snowfall over the hills are expected in Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Feb 08th to 10th.

Rain with isolated hailstorm is expected in Islamabad, Pothohar region, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Lahore, Faisalabad and other Punjab districts from Feb 09th to 10th.

Light to moderate rain-wind/thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected in Quetta, Zhob, Barkhan, Harnai, Qila Saifullah, Qillah Abdullah, Chamman and Pishin on 08th & 09th February, according to the weather forecast.

Moderate to isolated heavy snowfall may disrupt and cause closure of roads in Murree, Galiyat, Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Neelum valley, Bagh, Poonch and Haveli from 08th to 10th February.

Possibility of landslides in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan cannot be ruled out during the forecast period.

NABLUS – Israeli troops killed a Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian health ministry, with the Israeli army alleging he fired on soldiers.

Hamza Amjad al-Ashqar, 17, was “killed by a gunshot in the face fired by occupation (Israeli) soldiers during the onslaught on Nablus,” according to the ministry.

The Israeli army claimed troops had “responded with live fire towards an armed suspect who fired at them”.

“A hit was identified,” the army said in a statement, adding that “rocks, explosive devices, and Molotov cocktails were hurled at the soldiers” conducting the raid.

A military spokeswoman was unable to immediately identify the weapon used by the armed suspect.

According to a Palestinian security source who was not authorized to speak to the media, Ashqar was from the Askar refugee camp in Nablus.

According to the source, three persons were arrested during the Israeli raid on the city.

Ashqar was not a member of any Palestinian organization.

Separately, the official Palestinian news agency said that approximately 20 Palestinians were detained in Burqin, near the flashpoint city of Jenin.

A fresh wave of Israeli incursions in West Bank towns and cities has resulted in an increasing death toll.

After a days-long search for suspects in a shooting at a restaurant near Jericho, Israeli forces killed five suspected Palestinian gunmen in a raid on Monday.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has claimed the lives of 42 Palestinians since the beginning of the year, including assailants, terrorists, and bystanders. During the same time period, six Israeli civilians, including a child, and one Ukrainian civilian were killed.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since the 1967 Six-Day War.

Following a major 7.8-magnitude earthquake in southern Turkey, Turkish police detained four people on Tuesday for “provocative” social media posts.

The earthquake slammed the region early Monday, killing over 5000 people in Turkiye and Syria, wounding hundreds more, and leaving many more without shelter in the harsh cold.

The four people were arrested after detectives discovered accounts that published “provocative posts aimed at instilling fear and terror,” according to the police.

It also stated that a larger investigation into social media accounts was ongoing, but provided no information about the posts’ content.

People on Turkish social media have been complaining about a lack of search and rescue activities in their area, particularly in Hatay.

On Tuesday, the police appeared to address such allegations.

“The address and location information of citizens who seek help is immediately ascertained and coordination is established,” they said.

Turkish authorities have in the last few years cracked down on social media posts, especially those considered to support “terror”, but this has led to accusations that freedom of expression has been curtailed.
