Germany among nations ‘doing the most’ for Ukraine says Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz
  • Germany is one of the countries providing the most military aid to war-torn Ukraine.
  • The long delays in German weapon deliveries, compared to the quick deliveries of US arms.
  •  He also expressed concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin had the means to continue his offensive in Ukraine for a long time.

Germany is one of the countries providing the most military aid to war-torn Ukraine, according to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who defended his country’s delays in delivering weapons to Kyiv.

The long delays in German weapon deliveries, compared to the quick deliveries of US arms, are due to the need to train Ukrainian soldiers in Germany, Scholz explained on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

“We will always see that Germany is one of the countries that is doing the most, because what we are sending now is the most sophisticated technology you can use,” Scholz said in the interview conducted Thursday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid.

Since Russia invaded its eastern European neighbor on February 24, Berlin has been accused of hesitating — even being reluctant — to send weapons to Ukraine, out of concern for its relations with Moscow.

Certain US weapons were delivered less than 48 hours after President Joe Biden signed off on the transfer, CBS journalist Margaret Brennan noted during her exchange with Scholz.

But Olaf Scholz said comparing that timeframe to Germany’s weeks or months of delay is unreasonable.

“You should understand that there is a difference of a country like the United States, which spends that much for defense, which is a very big investment, and you have a lot of weapons and stocks,” said Scholz.

He explained that the rocket launchers sent by other countries were already in stock, but were not necessarily the most modern, whereas Germany will send “the most modern howitzer… on the world market.”

He also expressed concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin had the means to continue his offensive in Ukraine.

“He is really doing this brutal war, and he prepared for it,” said Scholz, noting he thinks Putin decided to invade a year or more before actually doing so.

“So he will be able to continue with the war really a long time.”

South African entrepreneur seeks to turn caterpillars into tasty snacks

South African entrepreneur
  • Edible caterpillars, also known as “mopane worms,” are gaining popularity in Western cultures.
  • A South African entrepreneur has found ways of turning them into flour that can be used in savoury biscuits and protein bars.
  • When steamed and sliced, mopane pieces can also be used as pizza toppings.

A South African entrepreneur wants to change the way edible caterpillars, also known as “mopane worms,” are viewed and consumed.

Many people, particularly those from Western European backgrounds, still have reservations about eating insects.

They can, however, be a valuable source of nutrition, and farming them is not harmful to the environment.

South African chemical engineer Wendy Vesela has found ways of turning the spiky green and black caterpillars — which are packed with protein and iron — into a flour that can be used in savoury biscuits, sweet chocolate protein bars, cereals or smoothies.

When steamed and sliced, mopane pieces can also be used as pizza toppings.

Vesela says she has found domestic and international customers for her organic products.

Edible insects and worms may indeed be gaining popularity in Western cultures.

But food anthropologist Anna Trapido insists that the trend should not be seen as just another dietary fad, a “kind of adventure tourism, where you get a badge” for eating them.

“Mopane need to be treated with respect because they are part of people’s emotional, spiritual, culinary genres,” she said.

In Vesela’s home province of Limpopo, where she grew up in a town not far from the world-famous Kruger National Park, mopane is a staple food, cooked in a sauce of onions and tomatoes.

The caterpillars are “a healthier option of protein”, she said. And it’s “not a worm. So people have just to get over that fear.”

Vesela tried to woo reluctant customers with biscuits and protein bars at a recent food fair in Johannesburg’s upmarket Sandton district.

British Grand Prix: F1 talent Alex Albon flown to hospital following terrible collision

British Grand Prix
  • Driver Alex Albon was injured in the first crash of the British Grand Prix.
  • He was one of five drivers involved in the horrific incident at the start of the race.
  • Russell stopped his car following the red flag to check on Zhou Albon.

After being hurt in the horrific incident at the start of the 2022 British Grand Prix, Alex Albon was flown to the hospital.

Albon was one of five drivers who were directly impacted by the severe collision that sent Alfa Romeo star Zhou Guanyu crashing into the barrier upside down in the first few seconds of the first lap.

Immediately after the race began, a string of unsettling incidents began when George Russell made a terrible start.

The Mercedes driver eventually got into a positional battle with Zhou and Pierre Gasly, and as he swerved left to get some room on the track, he collided with the latter’s Alpha Tauri.

As a result, he struck Zhou’s right rear wheel hard and quickly, causing the Alfa Romeo to veer off the track and crash into a barrier. Due to the incident, Albon had to brake quickly, which caused Sebastian Vettel to crash into the back of him. Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon were also hit.

Following the collision, Williams tweeted to confirm Albon’s condition. An tweet states: “Following the incident on the first lap, Alex was flown by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for preventative examinations. When they become accessible, we will update you.”

His status has also received an update from the FIA. Posted on the official Twitter account: “Albon, the driver of Car 23, will be flown by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for preventative examinations. Russell, the driver of Car 63, underwent a health examination and was found to be in good health.”

Albon and Zhou were, as expected, absent from the race restart, but Ocon and Tsunoda were allowed to take part. Due to an FIA regulation, Russell was also unable to rejoin the field after stopping his car following the red flag to hastily check on Zhou.

In an interview, Russell said, “I jumped out of the car to see whether Zhou was okay.” “I immediately noticed that it was red-flagged. I ran back to the team to check when I got to the car and for some reason, I couldn’t quite get it to start. When I returned after telling the marshals to get out of the automobile, it was positioned on the flatbed. You cannot restart after you receive assistance.”

Mercedes attempted to challenge the FIA’s ruling, but Russell said they were “quite adamant” about standing their stance. The British Grand Prix got off to a chaotic start that saw protesters running onto the track in addition to the incident and its aftermath.
