• Some 2,000 Congolese or descendants of people from Congo joined the pope in Mass.
• They clapped when Francis spoke a few words in their languages.
• The pope’s planned trip was called off last month due to persistent knee pain.

During a particularly lively event on Sunday at St. Peter’s Basilica; Pope Francis greeted members of the Congolese community in Rome; by using phrases from their own tongues to wish them happiness and peace.

Francis, 85, was scheduled to visit Congo and South Sudan from July 2–7; as part of his journey. But owing to the pope’s ongoing knee problems; which has recently forced him to use a wheelchair or a cane; the trip was cancelled last month.

On the now-cancelled trip, Francis was scheduled to arrive in the Democratic Republic; of the Congo on Sunday and celebrate Mass at the airport in Kinshasa.

Instead, some 2,000 Congolese or those who are descended from Congolese people; attended the pope at the Vatican for Mass. They applauded as Francis said a few words; in the languages of Congo to start his sermon.

The nation’s four official languages, Swahili, Lingala, Tshiluba, and Kikongo; were used by the devout to say prayers.

Francis stated, “A Christian always brings peace,” reflecting the idea of reconciliation; he intended to carry throughout his African tour.

In stark contrast to the sometimes solemn apparel and chants of clergy, nuns; and rank-and-file believers at many basilica events; the congregation’s bright garb and lively singing stood out.

Francis urged the people and leaders of South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; to establish fresh paths toward peace, reconciliation, and prosperity in a video message; that was delivered to them a day earlier. Even though he was disappointed not to be able to visit this month; he pledged to do so as soon as possible.
