‘Halo’ devices protect drivers in two consecutive accidents in F1 & F2

Halo
  • Today’s Formula One and Formula Two races at Silverstone saw two horrific crashes that might have ended in tragedy.
  • Both drivers walked away from their cars unharmed thanks to the “Halo” device.
  • Halo is a cockpit-fixed safety feature that was introduced to Formula 1 and Formula 2 in 2018.

Today’s Formula One and Formula Two races at Silverstone saw two horrific incidents, both of which, according to experts, should have been fatal if not for a “Halo” device that saved lives.

On Sunday morning’s opening lap at Silverstone, Formula 2 drivers Dennis Hauger and Roy Nissany crashed after Hauger’s car was propelled over the “sausage” kerb and sent flying in Nissany’s direction.

Before both cars came to a stop in the gravel, Hauger’s car ploughed with his adversary at high speed.

Amazingly, both drivers walked away from the incident unharmed, and television replays revealed that Nissany’s life was saved thanks to the Halo, a cockpit-fixed safety feature that was introduced to Formula 1 and Formula 2 in 2018.

Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu was involved in a second first-lap crash in the subsequent Formula One race that was also held at Silverstone. His car flipped many times at high speeds and skidded upside-down across the gravel on top of its Halo device.

After going over a tire barrier once more, Zhou’s vehicle eventually became stuck between a fence and a barrier at the first corner, delaying rescue efforts.

George Russell, one of the drivers involved in the collision, raced to check on the Chinese driver as the race was red-flagged.

Russell was prevented from rejoining the race because his Mercedes was brought back to pit lane while he was attending to Zhou. Russell called it “one of the scariest crashes I’ve ever seen.”

Mercedes objected to the decision, but the FIA stood its ground.

Valtteri Bottas, Zhou’s teammate, originally attested to the fact that his friend was speaking, awake, and free of fractures.

Alfa Romeo reported that after examinations, he had been discharged from the circuit’s medical facility.

Later, Zhou expressed gratitude to the supporters.

He stated: “I’m fine, no problems. Today, Halo saved me. We appreciate all of your wonderful words, everyone!”

After Nissany and Hauger’s collision, F1 journalist Chris Medland tweeted: “Nissany’s life was definitely saved by the Halo. 100 percent.”

Tom Gaymor, an F1 commentator, said: “Thank goodness for the Halo, unmistakably the savior yet again.”

The Halo is a safety shield that helps keep big things and other debris out of the cockpit of a single-seat racing car.

It has drawn criticism for allegedly destroying the “purity” of a single-seat, open-cockpit racing vehicle.

Others have argued that it can obstruct a driver’s ability to rapidly exit the vehicle. This hasn’t been a problem in practice.

After he and bitter rival Max Verstappen collided during the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton said the Halo saved his life.

The rear-right wheel of Verstappen’s Red Bull car crashed with the top of Hamilton’s Mercedes after it veered out of control and into his path.

Later, Hamilton stated: “Today, I feel incredibly blessed. God is good because the Halo rescued my neck and myself.”

British Grand Prix: F1 talent Alex Albon flown to hospital following terrible collision

British Grand Prix
  • Driver Alex Albon was injured in the first crash of the British Grand Prix.
  • He was one of five drivers involved in the horrific incident at the start of the race.
  • Russell stopped his car following the red flag to check on Zhou Albon.

After being hurt in the horrific incident at the start of the 2022 British Grand Prix, Alex Albon was flown to the hospital.

Albon was one of five drivers who were directly impacted by the severe collision that sent Alfa Romeo star Zhou Guanyu crashing into the barrier upside down in the first few seconds of the first lap.

Immediately after the race began, a string of unsettling incidents began when George Russell made a terrible start.

The Mercedes driver eventually got into a positional battle with Zhou and Pierre Gasly, and as he swerved left to get some room on the track, he collided with the latter’s Alpha Tauri.

As a result, he struck Zhou’s right rear wheel hard and quickly, causing the Alfa Romeo to veer off the track and crash into a barrier. Due to the incident, Albon had to brake quickly, which caused Sebastian Vettel to crash into the back of him. Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon were also hit.

Following the collision, Williams tweeted to confirm Albon’s condition. An tweet states: “Following the incident on the first lap, Alex was flown by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for preventative examinations. When they become accessible, we will update you.”

His status has also received an update from the FIA. Posted on the official Twitter account: “Albon, the driver of Car 23, will be flown by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for preventative examinations. Russell, the driver of Car 63, underwent a health examination and was found to be in good health.”

Albon and Zhou were, as expected, absent from the race restart, but Ocon and Tsunoda were allowed to take part. Due to an FIA regulation, Russell was also unable to rejoin the field after stopping his car following the red flag to hastily check on Zhou.

In an interview, Russell said, “I jumped out of the car to see whether Zhou was okay.” “I immediately noticed that it was red-flagged. I ran back to the team to check when I got to the car and for some reason, I couldn’t quite get it to start. When I returned after telling the marshals to get out of the automobile, it was positioned on the flatbed. You cannot restart after you receive assistance.”

Mercedes attempted to challenge the FIA’s ruling, but Russell said they were “quite adamant” about standing their stance. The British Grand Prix got off to a chaotic start that saw protesters running onto the track in addition to the incident and its aftermath.

Formula 1 reveals car built to 2022 rules at Silverstone

Formula 1

Formula 1 has unveiled the 2022 F1 car ahead of the British Grand Prix in an attempt to envision what the next generation of cars might look like.

The next generation of car was originally scheduled to debut in 2021, but was postponed to 2022 as a cost-cutting measure due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s also the first time the car’s full-scale model has been shown.

Formula 1

The new Formula 1 car is designed to improve wheel-to-wheel racing and drivers’ ability to track each other in stale air. The new design has reduced the return to ground effect and the removal of aerodynamic components such as complex bargeboards and extra front winglets.

To eliminate the need for aerodynamic devices and the unfavorable impacts of following another car in turbulent air, a new front wing form, reduced suspension design, revised rear-end layout, and underfloor tunnels have been introduced.

Formula 1

Engine efficiency and fuel sustainability are two major concerns with the next set of standards on the future, while gasoline tanks, halo, and crash structures have also garnered attention and have been made safer.
