French man on trial after admitting student’s killing

French
  • Sophie Le Tan went missing on her 20th birthday in September 2018.
  • Her dismembered body was found by hikers in a forest in October 2019.
  • Jean-Marc Reiser, claims he accidentally killed her but investigators believe she was lured to her death.

A convicted French rapist went on trial in France on Monday for the murder of a student whom he claims he accidentally killed but whom investigators believe was lured to her death.

Sophie Le Tan went missing on September 8, 2018, on her 20th birthday, after failing to return from a visit to a rental apartment outside the eastern city of Strasbourg.

She was described by those close to her as a serious and likable young woman.

Her dismembered body was found by hikers in a forest in October 2019.

Jean-Marc Reiser, now 61, was arrested a week after she disappeared and was tracked down by police through phone records. He faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

After speaking to other students who responded to the same property advert only to be stood up, investigators believe Reiser used it to lure young women, observing the agreed meeting spot to see if they came alone.

A search of his apartment uncovered large bloodstains that had been carefully cleaned up, as well as Le Tan’s DNA on a saw in the cellar, according to court documents.

‘Shoot them dead’: Philippine president Duterte in his own words

Philippine president
  • Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was known for his foul-mouthed tirades, vulgar jokes, and threats to kill people.
  • His remarks were directed at everyone from drug users and critics to world leaders and even God.
  •  Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte endorses the killing of corrupt journalists.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who step down on Thursday, was notorious for his foul-mouthed tirades, vulgar jokes, and threats to kill people.

His unfiltered remarks were directed at everyone from drug users and critics to world leaders and even God, but he remained popular among Filipinos fed up with out-of-touch politicians and corruption.

Here are some of his quotes since taking power in 2016:

“Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now there are three million drug addicts (in the Philippines). I’d be happy to slaughter them.”

On September 30, 2016, Duterte likens his deadly crackdown on drug users to Hitler’s efforts to exterminate Jews, although vastly underestimating the number of people killed in the Holocaust by the Nazi leader’s regime.

“If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.”

Hours after being sworn into office on June 30, 2016, Duterte visits a dockside slum and urges Filipinos to kill drug users.

“Who is this stupid God? This son of a whore is really stupid in that sense. You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work.”

Taking aim at the biblical creation story, Duterte questions why God would create Adam and Eve and then expose them to temptation on June 22, 2018.

Shoot them dead

“My orders are to the police and military, also village officials, that if there is trouble or the situation arises that people fight and your lives are on the line, shoot them dead.”

On April 1, 2020, Duterte issues a shoot-to-kill order against coronavirus lockdown troublemakers after a protest over food aid.

Duterte’s legacy as Philippines president

Philippines president
  • His six-year tenure included a bloody drug war, devastating pandemic, and worst economic crisis in decades.
  • The son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, he was elected in 2016 on a promise to get rid of the Philippines’ drug problem.
  • He launched an 8-9 trillion peso ($147 billion to $165 billion) “build, build, build” campaign.

Rodrigo Duterte will step down as president on Thursday, ending a six-year tenure that included a bloody drug war, a devastating pandemic, and the worst economic crisis in decades.

The son and namesake of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who was swept to victory in a landslide last month, has succeeded the 77-year-old authoritarian firebrand.

Here are the key elements of Duterte’s legacy:

Duterte was elected in 2016 on a promise to get rid of the Philippines’ drug problem, openly ordering police to kill drug suspects if officers’ lives were in danger.

At least 6,248 people died in police anti-drug operations, official government figures show. But rights groups estimate tens of thousands have been slain by police and shadowy vigilantes, even without proof they were linked to drugs.

The campaign was widely condemned and sparked a probe by the International Criminal Court, but it did little to dent Duterte’s popularity among many Filipinos who welcomed his swift brand of justice.

Violence has persisted on the restive southern island of Mindanao despite a 2014 peace deal with former rebels from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Under Duterte, efforts to decommission the MILF’s 40,000 fighters and distribute economic aid have sputtered, raising fears that disillusioned Muslim youths could turn towards more hardline Islamist groups in the poor region.

In May 2017, hundreds of pro-Islamic State foreign and local gunmen seized Marawi, the country’s largest Muslim city.

But in what is seen by some analysts as Duterte’s biggest achievement, he signed a law in 2018 granting greater autonomy to the region — the crucial missing element to the languishing peace pact.
Millions of people were lifted out of poverty in the first few years of Duterte’s term as economic reforms by his predecessor Benigno Aquino bore fruit.

The poverty rate fell from 23.5 percent of the population in 2015 to 16.7 percent in 2018, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.

But as the pandemic choked the economy, the financial misery of the poor worsened.

The poverty rate shot back up to 23.7 percent last year in the country of 110 million people.

In the first three months of 2022, 43 percent of Filipino families reported feeling poor, while 34 percent felt they were on the “borderline”.

Financed by taxpayer money and foreign loans, Duterte went on a spending spree with an 8-9 trillion peso ($147 billion to $165 billion) “build, build, build” campaign to improve the sorry state of the country’s infrastructure.

Thousands of bridges, dikes, classrooms, evacuation centres and roads were built in a flurry of development.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said that in the first four years of Duterte’s term, the government was able to “accomplish” 2.5 trillion pesos’ worth of public infrastructure projects.

That compared with 820.4 billion pesos over the same number of years in the previous administration, it said.

But many key projects hit potholes.

The DPWH said recently that 12 out of 119 “infrastructure flagship projects” — which account for more than half of the overall cost of the campaign — have been completed.
