“Quibi was founded to create the next generation of storytelling,” founder and board Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg said in the statement.

“The world has changed dramatically since Quibi launched and our standalone business model is no longer viable.”

The developing Quibi, reportedly raising almost $2 billion with former HP CEO Meg Whitman onboard as its CEO.

“While we have enough capital to continue operating for a significant period of time, we made the difficult decision to wind down the business, return cash to our shareholders and say goodbye to our talented colleagues with grace,” Whitman added in the statement.

In an open letter to “employees, investors and partners” posted online, Katzenberg and Whitman wrote, “Quibi was a big idea and there was no one who wanted to make a success of it more than we did. Our failure was not for lack of trying; we’ve considered and exhausted every option available to us.”

The service launched in April just as COVID-19 was starting to upend the world. Its meltdown has set tongues wagging in the ultra-competitive Hollywood and tech trenches, as Quibi ranks among the priciest misfires of any entertainment-related startup.

However, its failure will put about 200 employees out of work, punctuating an already grueling time for the entertainment sector.

Tesla breaks revenue record despite the pandemic

The Electric-Car maker Tesla has recorded a major profit spike of a fifth quarter in a row despite the pandemic.

Tesla said it made $8.7 billion revenue in the three months to September, as deliveries rose 54%.

The firm said it still hoped to meet its goal of delivering more than 500,000 vehicles this year but warned this had “become more difficult”. Analysts also warned the firm faced mounting competition.

So far, Tesla has delivered fewer than 32,000 cars to customers this year – but nearly half of those – 139,593 – came in the three months ended 30 September.

That was up 54% from the prior quarter and 44% year-on-year.

However, the carmaker automatically rose to a profit of $311 million – more than double what it made during the same period last year.

The firm’s successful streak has not gone unnoticed by investors who spent years lamenting the firm’s lack of profits.

Shares in the firm have more than quadrupled in value since the start of the year – and climbed higher in after-hours trade on Wednesday.

“Yeh cheez toh hai, but fortunately it didn’t happen with Serious Men. People are liking it here. The validation is needed, especially from the West, and it hasn’t changed.”

He further revealed how he has received offers from Hollywood but nothing has worked out till now.

“Offers do come, but it’s just not materializing. Aisa nahi hai ki mara jaa raha hoon, ya thappa laega unka tab jaake actor kehlaunga. I am not dependent on that, and neither do I want to be. I want my films to go to the West and tell them that we are no less.”
