Ukrainian conflict: Russian air attacks target cities across Ukraine

Ukrainian conflict
  • Russia has attacked residential buildings and infrastructure.
  • Power outages have been reported in various places.
  • Residential areas were also impacted, but no casualties were reported.

Russia has carried out a series of missile strikes across Ukraine, hitting residential buildings and infrastructure in Kharkiv and Odesa, Ukrainian officials say.

Power outages have been reported in various places as a result of the strikes, according to regional officials.

According to the governor of Odesa, Maksym Marchenko, a mass missile attack hit an energy facility, causing power outages.

Residential areas were also impacted, but no casualties were reported, he added.

Oleg Synegubov, chairman of Kharkiv’s regional administration, said “about 15” strikes had hit the city and area, with “critical infrastructure facilities” and a residential building targeted.

Additional strikes were reported in the eastern city of Dnipro and other areas.

Sobbing American Marine portrays Afghanistan’s “catastrophe”

American
  • He described a moment of turmoil and unpreparedness following the Taliban’s seizure of Kabul.
  • Others described experiencing trauma and moral harm in the aftermath.
  • Thirteen US soldiers and 170 Afghan civilians were killed in the bombing.

A veteran US Marine seriously injured in Afghanistan has described the pullout in 2021 as a “catastrophe” in testimony before Congress.

Tyler Vargas-Andrews testified during the first of a series of Republican-led hearings on the Biden administration’s handling of the withdrawal.

He described a moment of turmoil and unpreparedness following the Taliban’s seizure of Kabul.

Others described experiencing trauma and moral harm in the aftermath.

On August 26, 2021, Sgt Vargas-Andrews, 25, was one of numerous US military personnel charged with securing Kabul’s airport when two suicide bombers targeted crowds of Afghans fleeing the Taliban during the US retreat.

Thirteen US soldiers and 170 Afghan civilians were killed in the bombing.

Sgt Vargas-Andrews stated that he and another US Marine received intelligence about the attack before it happened and that he saw the suspect in the crowd.

‘Plain and simple’

He stated that he had notified his superiors and requested permission to act, but had not gotten it.

“Plain and simple, we were ignored,” Sgt Vargas-Andrews said.

He described being flung in the air during the blast and opening his eyes to find his colleagues dead or asleep around him in emotional testimony.

“My body was overwhelmed by the trauma of the blast. My abdomen had been ripped open. Every inch of my exposed body took ball bearings and shrapnel,” he said.

Sgt Vargas-Andrews called the withdrawal a “catastrophe”, adding: “There was an inexcusable lack of accountability and negligence.”

“I see the faces of all of those we could not save, those we left behind,” he said.

Several US servicemen and veterans spoke before the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing into the disengagement from Afghanistan about the mental health toll that the drawdown has taken on them.

Gutting

Former Lt Col David Scott Mann, who helped to evacuate Afghans at the time, stated that the experience trying to get comrades out had been “gutting”.

He said that calls to the Veteran Affairs hotline increased 81% after the pullout from Afghanistan, and he warned that the US was on the “front end of a mental health tsunami”.

In the aftermath, he added, a friend he had served with committed suicide.

“He just couldn’t find his way out of the darkness of that moral injury,” Lt Col Mann said.

The majority of witnesses, from George W. Bush to Joe Biden, blamed every presidential administration since US forces were initially deployed to Afghanistan.

Witnesses also urged rapid action to assist Afghan allies who are still in limbo in both Afghanistan and the United States.

“America is building a nasty reputation for multi-generational systemic abandonment of our allies where we leave a smoldering human refuse, from the Montagnards of Vietnam to the Kurds in Syria,” Lt Col Mann said.

Conservatives who have long advocated for an investigation blamed the Biden administration.

The withdrawal was a “total collapse of the federal government at every level,” said panel chairman Michael McCaul, a House Republican from Texas.

Democrats spoke out in support of President Biden in response.

Congressman Gregory Meeks from New York said that Mr. Biden had “made the right decision to bring all our troops home”.

“I can’t in good conscience imagine sending more American men and women to fight in Afghanistan.”

Mr. Biden had previously said that he bore “responsibility for fundamentally all that has happened”, but he also blamed former President Donald Trump for overseeing the withdrawal deal with the Taliban.

‘It’s a catastrophe’: PAD holds donation drive for flood victims

PAD
  • Pakistan has received unprecedented rainfall, causing floods that have affected 33 million people.
  • PAD organization shipped over 42 tonnes of relief aid to the South Asian country over the weekend.
  • Relief efforts by the Pakistan Association Dubai are currently focusing largely on accruing tents.

The Pakistan Association Dubai is organizing a fundraising campaign to assist millions of people affected by the country’s devastating floods.

Despite the fact that the organization shipped over 42 tonnes of relief aid to the South Asian country over the weekend, hundreds of UAE citizens continue to give to the cause.

Donations will be gathered and packed at the Pakistan Association Dubai offices in the Oud Metha district, in collaboration with the Dar Al Ber Society.

Over the last few weeks, Pakistan has received unprecedented rainfall, causing floods that have affected 33 million people and killed over 1,300 people. With one-third of the country already submerged, half a million people are at risk.

Relief efforts by the Pakistan Association Dubai are currently focusing largely on accruing tents, dry food items, hygiene kits, blankets, towels, and bedsheets.

“We’ve had a great response from the community so far. Lots of schools and corporations have reached out to us and want to join the campaign,” Faisal Ikram, president of the Pakistan Association Dubai, told The National.

“I was in Pakistan in the 2010 floods and I know the experience of these floods.

“I think this is a much bigger catastrophe than the 2010 floods. One-third of the country is underwater and a lot of these areas are where people depend on crops or cattle for livelihood. It’s going to be a massive effort required to rebuild them.”

Dr. Ikram expects that the donation drive will continue for another two or three months.

More than 200 residents across the UAE have volunteered to help with the campaign, including delivering and packing the relief items.

Abdulla Osama, 21, is one of the volunteers who has been turning up almost daily to pack clothes.

“I feel it’s my duty. What is happening in Pakistan right now is terrible. I want to help as much as I can,” he said.

“I’m happy to come every day and help where it is needed. I’m also very happy to see how many people are volunteering and donating. It’s a great community effort.”

The Pakistan Association Dubai is accepting donations from 9 am to 9 pm, and people have been coming in throughout the day, bringing in boxes filled with relief items.

Dhruv Bhatt is an Indian businessman who brought donations on Monday.

“I’ve brought non-perishables like rice and lentils. We’re trying to do as much as we can by collecting from families and friends,” he said.

“It’s really sad seeing the kind of events that are unfolding there. People are really struggling.”

Pupils from schools across the UAE have created their own packages for the victims, with handwritten notes and small stationary items.

The next step of the program, according to Dr. Ikram, will seek to reconstruct communities.

He also stated that they are collecting cash donations, which would be handled through the Dar Al Ber charity and utilized mostly to restore infrastructure.

“Phase two will include reconstructing people’s homes, villages, schools, tiny hospitals or clinics, and mosques,” he explained.

Since the floods, the UAE has been offering aid to Pakistan.

Hundreds of volunteers assisted in the packing of thousands of essential relief children and food supplies on Saturday.

The “We Stand Together” national community event was hosted at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Dubai Expo City, and the Expo Centre in Sharjah.

By the end of the day, volunteers packed 1.2 tonnes of supplies into 30,000 boxes.

The food supplies included flour, rice, lentils, tomato paste, and oil, while relief kits consisted of essential toiletries for women and children, such as diapers, sanitary pads, and soaps.

The UAE is operating an air bridge to transport humanitarian aid.

On August 27, President Sheikh Mohamed ordered urgent aid to be sent to Pakistan.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, also ordered aid worth Dh50 million ($13.6m) be delivered to the country.

Floods in Pakistan: A Dubai expat group sends 300 tonnes of aid

Pakistan
  • Around Dh1.7 million in aid and seven containers have been distributed across Pakistan.
  • The Association launched an emergency appeal for donations to flood victims.
  • The death toll from the devastating floods is expected to exceed 1,600.

Around Dh1.7 million in aid and seven containers have been distributed across Pakistan to assist millions of people affected by heavy rains and floods in recent months.

On September 5, the Association launched an emergency appeal for donations to flood victims in collaboration with the Dar Al Ber Society and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities.

The Association is also taking part in the UAE‘s national aid initiative, “We Stand Together,” and has mobilised the community to support its countrymen.

The death toll from the devastating floods is expected to exceed 1,600, with over 13,000 people injured. Authorities in Pakistan estimate that over 33 million people have been directly affected by the unprecedented floods that have submerged vast swaths of the country, forcing many to live in makeshift tents. The heavy rains and floods have killed over 1.1 million cattle and domestic animals.

The United Nations and the government have blamed unprecedented floods on global climate change following record-breaking summer temperatures.

The Pakistan Association Dubai has also delivered over 3,575 food packages, 3,400 kg of clothing, 7,200 kg of dry ration, over 1,300 tents and tarpaulins, 2,500 kg of dates, 350 kg of hygiene items, 750 blankets, 200 kg shoes, 520 kg of crockery, and much more.

Relief efforts are underway in Sukkur (Sindh), Bela (Balochistan), and Charsada (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). Hundreds of patients were treated in medical camps, and rations containing all basic items such as rice, flour, oil, tea, milk, and spices were distributed to thousands of families. While the kitchen has fed thousands of people and families affected by the rains.

The Association has raised Dh656,000 and hopes to raise Dh1 million for flood victims.

The United Arab Emirates and neighbouring Gulf countries have been the primary sources of aid for flood victims in Pakistan. Over 40 aid flights have landed in the UAE, making it the largest supplier of aid to flood-affected areas, followed by the United States, Turkey, Oman, China, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

A large number of volunteers from across the UAE recently helped pack food and hygiene kits into cardboard boxes for flood victims in Pakistan at Expo City Dubai.

Pakistan Association Dubai will construct a model community

Pakistan Association Dubai
  • The hamlet will include 64 residences, a medical clinic, a mosque, a school, a playground, and a park.
  • It will consist of 16 clusters, each with four houses.
  • Construction will begin on January 1, 2023, and will be completed by the end of March.

Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD), in partnership with Al Khidmat Foundation, will construct a model hamlet for flood victims in Pakistan’s Balochistan province’s Lasbela district.

The hamlet will include 64 residences, a medical clinic, a mosque, a school, a playground, and a park. It will consist of 16 clusters, each with four houses, and will serve approximately 600 people from the Lasbela district, which was one of the most impacted places in the recent floods.

Solar energy will be used to power the project, which will supply communities with clean water, sanitation, and sewage services.

Construction will begin on January 1, 2023, and will be completed by the end of March.

“Earlier, when we launched this campaign, we envisioned building this model village. There were several paperwork and logistics which we had to ensure were well-aligned to help this project materialize. We remain grateful to Community Development Authority (CDA), the Dar Al Ber Society, and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities for their continuous efforts to facilitate our relief work. For donations, I request you to be a part of this noble cause,” said Dr. Ikram.

Al Khidmat Pakistan, which assisted PAD with flood relief efforts, will also assist in the development and completion of this multi-component project.

Pakistan has experienced the greatest floods in its history, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes and damaging many public health facilities, water systems, and infrastructure.

This year’s high monsoon rains in Pakistan affected over 33 million people, including approximately 16 million children, destroying key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and public health facilities.

Previously, Pakistan Association Dubai contributed 435 tonnes of aid and 15 containers to flood relief efforts.

According to the Organization, the mosque, dispensary, and solar-powered water project have already been funded.

“I was waiting for PAD to announce this because I wanted to build a mosque there,” said the anonymous donor who supported the mosque. We know that floods have destroyed homes and villages. This is my and my family’s way of contributing to the rehabilitation of our Balochistani brothers and sisters.”

Each house in the model town will cost Dh6,000 to build (Rs366,000).

PAD said the material being used is low-cost but without compromising on the quality. The substructure will be built using cement, sand, and crushed. Masonry work will be done using blocks, cement, and sand. For the superstructure, blocks, cement and sand will be used. Internal and external plaster work will be carried out using cement and sand. The floor is to be made with hilly sand and the roof precast will be girder with slab, and cement for filling the door and window.

“After thorough monitoring and evaluation, the project status will be communicated to the donor as per the agreed reporting schedule,” the Association said.

UK’s Sunak pledges to halt cross-channel migration

Rishi Sunak
  • British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged on Tuesday to remove illegal migrants within weeks.
  • Last year, over 45,000 migrants arrived on the shores of southeast England on small boats.
  • According to Sunak, anyone arriving illegally in the UK will be unable to claim asylum under the draught law.

In a controversial new plan to stop people crossing the Channel illegally on small boats, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged on Tuesday to remove illegal migrants within weeks.

Sunak was speaking after his Conservative government unveiled its proposals, which it admitted stretched international law, sparking a backlash from rights activists.

Last year, over 45,000 migrants arrived on the shores of southeast England on small boats, a 60% increase on a perilous route that has grown in popularity every year since 2018.

According to Sunak, anyone arriving illegally in the UK will be unable to claim asylum under the draught law, which will take effect on Tuesday.

“If you come here illegally, you can’t claim asylum. You can’t benefit from our modern slavery protections. You can’t make spurious human rights claims and you can’t stay,” he said.

“We will detain those who come here illegally and then remove them in weeks, either to their own country if it is safe to do so. Or to a Safe Third Country like Rwanda and once you are removed, you will be banned as you are in America and Australia from ever re-entering our country.”

Sunak earlier Tuesday pledged in The Sun newspaper to “reclaim control of our borders once and for all,” reiterating a popular pledge made by campaigners like him who supported Britain’s Brexit from the European Union (EU).

Interior Minister Suella Braverman will be given a new legal duty to deport all migrants entering illegally, such as across the Channel, under the draught law, superseding their other rights under UK and European human rights law.

“The current situation is neither moral nor sustainable. It cannot go on,” Sunak added.

“And it’s devastatingly unfair on those who most need our help, but can’t get it as our asylum system is being overwhelmed by those travelling illegally across the channel,” he said.

Right-winger Braverman said in parliament she was “confident that this bill is compatible with international obligations” – despite conceding in an overnight article that it “pushed the boundaries of international law”.

Fleeing for their lives

According to rights groups and opposition parties, the plan is unworkable and unfairly blames vulnerable refugees.

According to Christina Marriott, executive director of strategy for the British Red Cross, the UK would violate international asylum conventions.

“We wonder if you are fleeing persecution or war if you are running from Afghanistan or Syria and are in fear for your life, how are you going to be able to claim asylum in the UK?” she told Sky News.

Steve Valdez-Symonds of Amnesty International said it was “chilling to see ministers trying to remove human rights protections for groups of people whom they’ve chosen to scapegoat for their own failures”.

“People fleeing persecution and conflict will be irreparably harmed by these proposals,” he said in a statement.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said the plans amounted to an asylum ban and urged “more humane” solutions instead.

So far this year, nearly 3,000 people have arrived by boat, often ending up in expensive hotels at taxpayer expense, and the backlog of asylum claims now exceeds 160,000.

The new plan would temporarily relocate illegal migrants to decommissioned military barracks and cap the annual number of refugees settled through safe and legal channels.

Profits for gangsters

The government, which is trailing in opinion polls, has been attempting to resolve the issue for years.

It had hoped that the threat of a one-way ticket to Rwanda, where migrants would stay if granted asylum, would deter cross-Channel travel.

However, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which is separate from the EU, blocked the plan announced by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson last year at the last minute.

It was then upheld by the UK’s High Court, but it is still being challenged. There have been no flights to Rwanda as of yet.

According to reports on Tuesday, the government may withdraw from the ECHR if the Strasbourg-based court intervenes again in its latest legislation, following what Braverman called the court’s “opaque” ruling on Rwanda.

Sunak went on to say that illegal migration was a “shared challenge” with Europe’s allies, and that countries across the continent were considering new laws and policies to combat it.

He said a recent deal with the French had seen increased patrols on beaches and “significant and better cooperation and collaboration between our teams”.

Cyclone Freddy: Deadly storm set to hit Mozambique

Cyclone Freddy
  • Eight individuals were killed and nearly 1,000 dwellings were destroyed.
  • The storm wreaked havoc across southern Africa, killing 21 people.
  • The storm has already smashed records for its ferocity and the 8,000-kilometer.

Cyclone Freddy is expected to make landfall again in Mozambique later this week after it struck Madagascar for a second time on Monday.

According to the Madagascar government, eight individuals were killed and nearly 1,000 dwellings were destroyed.

In late February, the storm wreaked havoc across southern Africa, killing 21 people and displacing hundreds in both countries.

It is unusual for a storm to make such a loop, according to meteorologists.

The tropical cyclone is on course to become the longest-lasting storm on record, and it is strengthening.

The storm has already smashed records for its ferocity and the 8,000-kilometer (5,000-mile) path it took over the Indian Ocean.

Its longevity and strength have piqued the interest of weather scientists all over the world.

The cyclone formed off the north Australian coast in early February and traveled hundreds of kilometers across the southern Indian Ocean, impacting Mauritius and La Réunion before making landfall in Madagascar and Mozambique two weeks later.

According to experts, this is an extremely unusual course for such a storm to pursue.

It already holds the southern hemisphere record for the most accumulated cyclone energy. It is a measure of the strength of a storm over time.

Mozambique is now prepared for a second landfall, while still recovering from the cyclone’s rains and floods.

In just the last week, Madagascar got over three times its monthly normal rainfall.

The Weather and Climate Extremes evaluation committee of the UN says it will probably set up an investigation into this “remarkable” and “rare occurrence” after the cyclone has dissipated.

UN says UK’s draught law amounts to “asylum ban”

United Nations
  • UN has warned that a British draught law aimed at stopping migrants entering illegally on small boats.
  • The UN refugee agency expressed “deep concern” about plans.
  • UNHCR said it had presented London with solid, actionable proposals for fast, fair and efficient case processing.

The UN has warned that a British draught law aimed at stopping migrants entering illegally on small boats will amount to an asylum ban, and has called for “more humane” solutions instead.

The UN refugee agency expressed “deep concern” about plans to give the British interior minister a new legal duty to deport all illegal migrants, such as those crossing the Channel from France in inflatable boats.

“The legislation, if passed, would amount to an asylum ban – extinguishing the right to seek refugee protection in the United Kingdom for those who arrive irregularly, no matter how genuine and compelling their claim may be, and with no consideration of their individual circumstances,” UNHCR said in a statement.

The bill would deny asylum seekers in need of protection and would “even deny them the opportunity to put forward their case. This would be a clear breach of the Refugee Convention”.

“Most people fleeing war and persecution are simply unable to access the required passports and visas. There are no safe and ‘legal’ routes available to them,” UNHCR said.

“Denying them access to asylum on this basis undermines the very purpose for which the Refugee Convention was established.”

According to UNHCR, based on the most recent data from the British Interior Ministry, the vast majority of those arriving in Britain in small boats across the Channel would be accepted as refugees if their claims were assessed.

“Branding refugees as undeserving based on the mode of arrival distorts these fundamental facts,” it said.

UNHCR said it had presented London with solid, actionable proposals for fast, fair and efficient case processing and would work with Britain to expand safe, regular pathways for refugees to reach the UK, but said these were limited and “can never substitute for access to asylum”.

The Geneva-based agency urged the British government and all parliamentarians “to reconsider the bill and instead pursue more humane and practical policy solutions”.

Thousands demonstrate against Georgia’s ‘foreign agent’ bill

Georgia
  • Parliament approved a contentious draught bill that opponents believe limits press freedom.
  • Riot police dispersed the crowds outside the parliament building with water cannons and pepper spray.
  • Several police officers were injured and police equipment was damaged.

Protesters battled with police in Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, after parliament approved a contentious draught bill that opponents believe limits press freedom and suppress civil society.

Riot police dispersed the crowds outside the parliament building with water cannons and pepper spray.

Several demonstrators were spotted coughing and falling to the ground, while others waved EU and Georgian flags.

According to the administration, several police officers were injured and police equipment was damaged.

There has been strong international disapproval of the law, which would require non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and independent media who receive more than 20% of their money from overseas to register themselves as foreign agents.

The opposition characterized it as a Russian-style measure that would stigmatize and restrict Georgia’s robust civil society and independent media.

‘A terrible setback’

The planned law would be “a terrible setback,” according to US State Department spokesman Ned Price.

Mr. Price stated that the law “would strike at some of the core rights that are central to the aspirations of the people of Georgia,” and that the US was extremely concerned and troubled by it.

The new legislation is “incompatible with EU values and standards,” according to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

Georgia’s application for EU candidate status is now being considered by Brussels.

In 2012, Russia established its own version of a “foreign agents” law, which has since been expanded to target and restrict Western-funded Organizations and media.

“The law is Russian as we all know… We don’t want to be a part of the ex-Soviet Union, we want to be a part of the European Union, we want to be pro-West,” one protester told.

Speaking via video during a visit to New York, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili voiced her support for the protesters: “I am by your side. Today you represent free Georgia. Georgia, which sees its future in Europe, will not allow anyone to take away this future.”

Inside the parliament building, however, 76 legislators from the ruling Georgian Dream party first supported the new “transparency of foreign interference” draught bill.

A committee hearing into the proposed law ended in a parliamentary brawl on Monday.

If the measure is passed, Georgia will join a litany of undemocratic and authoritarian post-Soviet governments that have replicated Russian legislation restricting the activities of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

A dark day for Georgia’s democracy

In Russia and Georgia, the term “agent” has historically meant “spy” or “traitor,” lending a negative connotation to the activity of civil society. It implies that they are operating in the interests of foreign powers rather than in the interests of the country and community.

The US embassy issued a statement describing Tuesday’s vote as a “dark day for Georgia’s democracy”.

It added that parliament’s advancing “of these Kremlin-inspired laws was incompatible with the people of Georgia’s clear desire for European integration and its democratic development”.

The overtly anti-Western People’s Power movement, a close partner of the ruling Georgian Dream party, introduced the two proposals on “transparency of foreign agents” and “registration of foreign agents” in parliament.

The group has argued that the second bill was an exact analog of the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

Georgian Dream backed the draughts, claiming that such legislation was needed to increase openness.

At a conference on Tuesday evening, the head of the governing party, Irakli Kobakhidze, struck out the United States embassy’s statement, saying it was “a dark day for the radical opposition and its supporters”.

Most demonstrators and the country’s opposition worry that the law’s passage will put an end to Georgia’s long-held aspiration to join the EU.

More than 80% of Georgians favor the country’s European orientation, which is also inscribed in its constitution.

Women bear additional burdens as a result of Turkey’s earthquake

Turkey
  • Doctor Meltem Gunbegi reconnects women with the basics they feel uncomfortable
  • The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake has risen to over 46,000 in Turkey.
  • According to a top UN official, the damage alone totaled more than $100 billion.

The shelves of the makeshift clinic, which is little more than an orange storage container, contain everything women are too afraid to ask for on the streets of Turkey’s earthquake zone.

Doctor Meltem Gunbegi reconnects women with the basics they feel uncomfortable discussing in the crowds of mass aid distribution centres, from underwear to period and contraception products.

She also lends a sympathetic ear, assisting the women of Antakya, Turkey‘s devastated southern city, in processing the grief and death they have experienced in the last month.

The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake has risen to over 46,000 in Turkey and nearly 6,000 in Syria, making it one of the world’s ten deadliest in the last century.

According to a top United Nations official, the damage alone totaled more than $100 billion, with additional funds required for recovery costs.

“Many are shy when it comes to asking for basics, such as bras, wax bands and tweezers, so they come and visit our container,” said the 33-year-old doctor.

According to Gunbegi, more women are experiencing genital problems as a result of poor hygiene conditions in tent cities across the 11 quake-affected provinces.

But she also sees women who are clearly in shock and are too traumatised to think about their own bodies, even when they are pregnant.

“They experienced a lot of death and destruction,” said the doctor. “They really don’t seem to think about the baby. They are in a state of trauma.”

Semire Duman, a 51-year-old earthquake survivor who has been living in a tent for a month, said women have many needs.

“We have no shower, no toilet, no water, nothing,” she told AFP, and then almost whispered: “We don’t have underwear.”

Gazele Sumer, 57, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of privacy in tents

“We are six people in one tent,” she said. “We sit here, we eat there, we sleep here,” she added.

‘Insecure’

Selver Buyukkeles, an earthquake survivor who works with the Mor (Purple) Solidarity, said that even before the February 6 quake, women bore the brunt of daily burdens such as chores and family care.

They are now attempting to do the same while dealing with personal pain and the acute sense of insecurity that comes with street life.

“Women queue to get food at distribution centres. They cook, and they take care of the children and the elderly. They do the dishes. They do the laundry,” the 28-year-old said.

“Women feel responsible for their family’s situation. They fear a new earthquake and the communal life in tents makes them insecure,” she said.

Despite Turkey’s poor record on the issue, activists and doctors interviewed have not seen any more cases of domestic violence or abuse at this point.

Fidan Ataselim, secretary general of the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, has called for the establishment of “safe shelters” and “prevention centres” for women in affected areas.

We Will Stop Femicide raises awareness about the murder and abuse of women in the predominantly Muslim but officially secular state.

According to data compiled by the platform, at least 327 women were killed and 793 were injured in 2022.

‘Safe zone’

Back at Antakya’s Dostluk (Friendship) park, not far from Gunbegi’s makeshift clinic, volunteers work in shifts to ensure the safety of the 200 women who have taken refuge in dozens of tents.

Others are stationed outside toilets and shower cabins.

“Safe zone for women and LGBT+ here,” proclaims posters in Turkish and Arabic.

The Arabic is a nod to the millions of refugees and migrants who have been living in southern Turkey since the civil war in neighbouring Syria began 12 years ago.

“We have a security system for both women and LGBT+, who are more vulnerable in such disasters,” said Aslihan Keles, 23, one of the volunteers in the park.

On March 8, the official International Women’s Day, Turkish women frequently join marches demanding better lives and protection from domestic violence.

However, things are different in the earthquake zone this year, according to Keles.

“Here, there is an emergency,” she said. “This time, we are in the field — but for a very good cause.”

UN wants China to take action on human rights issues

China
  • The UN human rights chief demanded action from Beijing.
  • Turk has been under pressure from Western nations and rights organizations to take a firm.
  • “All legitimate rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people are better protected”.

Volker Turk, the UN human rights chief, demanded action from Beijing on Tuesday to address “grave concerns” about the human rights situation in China’s Xinjiang province.

Following a bombshell report by his predecessor that cited possible crimes against humanity in the far-western region, Turk has been under pressure from Western nations and rights organizations to take a firm stance on Xinjiang.

Turk stated in his main speech to the current UN Human Rights Council session that the UN is concerned about the protection of minorities such as Uyghurs in Xinjiang and Tibetans.

“Regarding China, we have opened up channels of communication with a range of actors to follow up on a variety of human rights issues,” Turk said.

“In the Xinjiang region, my office has documented grave concerns — notably large-scale arbitrary detentions and ongoing family separations — and has made important recommendations that require concrete follow-up.”

Turk also expressed concern about Hong Kong’s far-reaching national security law, which was enacted in 2020 to quell dissent following massive and often violent pro-democracy demonstrations.

“We also have concerns about the severe restriction of civic space more generally, including the arbitrary detention of human rights defenders and lawyers, and the impact of the National Security Law in Hong Kong,” he said.

The allegations of torture are ‘credible’

Turk made the remarks during his first set-piece speech to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva since taking office as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in October.

Turk’s predecessor, Michelle Bachelet, released a long-awaited report on Xinjiang just 13 minutes before her term ended on August 31.

It detailed a slew of human rights violations against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities, highlighting “credible” claims of widespread torture, arbitrary detention, and violations of religious and reproductive rights.

Beijing strongly denies the allegations and maintains that it is running vocational training centres in the region to combat extremism.

In response to Turk’s speech, Chinese ambassador Chen Xu stated that human rights in Xinjiang were “well protected” as a result of Beijing’s efforts to combat terrorism and radicalization.

“Xinjiang and Tibet enjoy continuous economic growth, harmonious and stable society, constantly improved livelihood, prosperous culture, peaceful co-existence of all religions and unprecedented achievements in human rights development,” he said.

Furthermore, “all legitimate rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people are better protected” since the implementation of the National Security Law.

Western countries, led by the United States, attempted to hold a debate on the Xinjiang report at the Human Rights Council last October.

Despite intense Chinese lobbying among the 47 members of the UN Security Council, nations voted 19-17 against discussing the findings, with 11 abstaining.

US ambassador Michele Taylor urged the council Tuesday to “take action to address the egregious and ongoing violation of human rights in Xinjiang”.

Meanwhile, British Ambassador Simon Manley urged Beijing to “stop denying the facts and engage seriously and constructively” with Turk’s office’s recommendations.

Human Rights Watch’s Geneva director, Hilary Power, urged the council to look into “sweeping rights abuses in China, including in Xinjiang,” noting that this call had “been made by hundreds of other NGOs from all regions and numerous UN experts.”

UN Celebrates International Women’s Day

UN
  • This year’s UN theme is DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.
  • 37% of women do not use the internet.
  • 259 million fewer women than men have internet access.

On March 8, countries around the world observe International Women’s Day (IWD).

According to the United Nations, this year’s theme is DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.

According to the United Nations, women have contributed to information technology since its inception. Nonetheless, it claims that those contributions have received little recognition or significance.

According to the international body, 37% of women do not use the internet. It also claims that 259 million fewer women than men have internet access. Yet, women constitute about half of the world’s population. According to the United Nations, women are vastly underrepresented in jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Bringing women into technology results in more creative solutions and has greater potential for innovations that meet women’s needs and promote gender equality,” says the U.N.’s website.

For this year’s International Women’s Day, U.S. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement, “Let us work together – across governments, the private sector, and civil society – to build a more inclusive, just, and prosperous world for women, girls, men, and boys everywhere.”

What Is International Women’s Day?

The IWD has its origins in the American social and labor movements.

On March 8, 1857, female employees marched in New York City in protest of unjust working conditions and uneven rights in textile factories. According to the National Archives, the workers demanded a shorter workday and more pay.

Women workers marched through New York City again on March 8, 1908, to protest child labor and bad working conditions and to demand women’s right to vote.

On March 19, 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland held the first recorded international celebration. Almost a million individuals showed up to support women’s rights at the time.

Following World War II, some countries began to observe March 8 as Women’s Day. In 1977, the United Nations formally designated that date as International Women’s Day. Other countries, including China, Russia, and Uganda, observe it as a national holiday.

Climate change, rural women, and HIV/AIDS have all been topics of previous United Nations festivities.

Since 2007, the United States State Department has given the International Women of Courage Award to over 180 women from 80 nations.

5 facts you need to know about International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day
  • The commemoration of Women’s Day in Russia in 1917 earned them the right to vote.
  • The International Women’s Day symbol is a female gender symbol.
  • Some see it as a day of protest, while others see it as a way to promote gender equality.

International Women’s Day is observed every year on March 8 to commemorate and honor women’s achievements, raise awareness about gender inequities and discrimination, and promote global support for women.

But how well do you know IWD? We’ve come to answer five crucial questions.

How long has International Women’s Day been celebrated?

The then-active Socialist Party of America commemorated the first National Woman’s Day on February 28, 1909, in honor of the 15,000 women who demonstrated in New York against terrible working conditions and lower wages.

Clara Zetkin, a women’s rights campaigner and the chairwoman of the Social Democratic Party’s Women’s Office in Germany, introduced the notion of a global International Women’s Day in 1910.

The inaugural International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911, with over 1 million people participating in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

The United Nations did not acknowledge and begin honoring International Women’s Day until 1975. (IWD). Since then, the United Nations has served as the event’s primary sponsor, pushing more countries to commemorate “acts of courage and resolve by ordinary women who have played an outstanding role in the history of their countries and communities.”

And for those who are curious and feel left out (get over it), there is an International Men’s Day, which is observed on November 19 in over 80 nations worldwide, including the United Kingdom. It has only been observed since the 1990s and is not recognized by the United Nations.

What is the color and symbol of International Women’s Day?

The International Women’s Day symbol is a female gender symbol. It is typically paired with the colors purple, green, and white.

Purple represents dignity and justice, green represents hope, and white represents purity, according to the International Women’s Day website. “The colors originated from the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908.”

Is it a holiday?

The purpose of the day differs by country. Some see it as a day of protest, while others see it as a way to promote gender equality. International Women’s Day is an official holiday in various nations.

Afghanistan, Armenia, Belarus, Cambodia, Cuba, Georgia, Laos, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Uganda, Ukraine, and Vietnam have declared IWD a national holiday.

Women’s Day and Mother’s Day have been combined in several countries, including Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, and Uzbekistan, to emphasize the importance of women as mothers.

Many women in China are given a half-day off work, while the Italian Festa della Donna is marked with the distribution of mimosa blossoms.

Why is it a historical celebration in Russia?

The commemoration of Women’s Day in Russia in 1917 earned them the right to vote.

Women in Russia honored the day that year by going on strike for ‘food and peace,’ protesting World War 1 and advocating for gender equality. Tsar Nicholas II was furious and gave General Khabalov of the Petrograd Military District the authority to shoot any woman who refused to stand down. They did not back down, and the protests continued, eventually leading to the Tsar’s abdication. As a result of their protest, the interim administration granted women the right to vote.

What’s the theme this year?

Each International Women’s Day has had an official theme since 1996.

The United Nations’ first theme, “Celebrating the Past, Preparing for the Future,” was adopted in 1996.

Last year’s International Women’s Day theme was #Breakthebias, which highlighted the challenges women experience as a result of gender bias.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #EmbraceEquity, according to the website. According to the website, 2023 focuses on how gender equity must be ingrained in every society: “It is crucial to distinguish between equity and equality. The goal of the #EmbraceEquity campaign topic for IWD 2023 is to have people talking about why equal opportunities aren’t enough. Individuals come from varied backgrounds, thus meaningful inclusion and belonging necessitate equal action.”

The visuals associated with this year’s IWD all contain the hugging motion, encouraging a warm embrace for equity.

Another highlight of this year is the UN theme, ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality,’ which aims to raise awareness of the importance and role of digital technology in exposing issues of gender inequality and discrimination. IWD will investigate the impact of the digital gender gap on inequality for women and girls, as the UN estimates that women’s lack of access to the online world will cost low and middle-income countries $1.5 trillion in GDP by 2025 if nothing is done.

“From the earliest days of computing to the present age of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, women have made untold contributions to the digital world in which we increasingly live,” the UN stated. “Their accomplishments have been against all odds, in a field that has historically neither welcomed nor appreciated them.”

Katy Perry
  • Fans are wondering why Katy Perry was upset with the red-haired mother of three.
  • Katy Perry has been a judge on the famous singing competition for a long time.
  • It was difficult for the mother of three to face Katy Perry.

Fans are wondering why Katy Perry was upset with the red-haired mother of three, Sara Beth Liebe. Katy Perry has been a judge on the famous singing competition for a long time, and there has never been any mention of Katy’s rude behaviour with American Idol contestants, as she enjoys and is always cheerful to whoever appears on the show.

Katy Perry and Sara Beth Liebe

Sara Beth Liebe performed Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” during her audition for American Idol. But the 25-year-old was requested to perform another song by Katy Perry, who also offered her some advice.

While she was quoted as saying that being a singer isn’t her dream just yet because her voice isn’t convincing. While the other judges praised her performance, Katy appeared to be unconvinced by her vocals. She continued, “Show us what your voice can do. Take it to the limit. No looking back. Sing it like it’s your new dream.”

Following her performance of ‘Bennie and the Jets,’ “Sara Beth was on the verge of passing out. But what went wrong here was Katy Perry’s comparison of her comeback to, as she quoted, “a ‘comic strip character that just came to life’.

The judges awarded Sara Beth Liebe the golden ticket, but it was difficult for the mother of three to face Katy Perry. As she mentioned, if this isn’t your dream, don’t go too far with it. Many others enter the door with a wish and a dream to visit Hollywood and who truly deserve a golden ticket.

6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes the southern Philippines

Philippines
  • A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines.
  • There were no immediate confirmed reports of serious damage.
  • Local authorities warned of aftershocks and potential damage.

The United States Geological Survey reported a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, with local authorities warning of aftershocks and potential damage.

The shallow quake happened at about 2:00 pm (0600 GMT), a few miles from Maragusan municipality in the hilly gold-mining district of Davao de Oro on Mindanao island.

Although shallow earthquakes do greater damage than deeper ones, there were no immediate confirmed reports of serious damage.

According to a staffer at the Maragusan disaster office, authorities were investigating claims of a landslide on a national route.

“We have not received any reports of other damage or casualties, but we are checking the villages around the town,” he added, declining to give his name.

No Damage

“Things shook at the office but there was no damage.”

The quake lasted around 30 seconds and was followed by aftershocks, according to Corporal Stephanie Clemen of Tagum police, roughly 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Maragusan.

“We hid behind our desks instantly, and when the ground stopped trembling, we went right outside,” Clemen told.

“We are still outside because a moderate aftershock just hit.”

While the quake did not appear to have destroyed anything, it was powerful enough to “cause fear,” according to Clemen.

Phoebe Alberto and her coworkers at the disaster office in New Bataan municipality, which borders Maragusan, evacuated when the building rocked.

“We are still assessing damage to our building if any,” said Alberto. “We are here outside now.”

In the Philippines, which sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of strong seismic and volcanic activity that spans from Japan to Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin, earthquakes occur on a daily basis.

Most are too weak to be sensed by humans, but powerful and destructive ones strike at random, with no technology to forecast when or where they will strike.

The nation’s civil defense administration conducts drills that simulate earthquake scenarios along active fault lines on a regular basis.

International Women’s Day, Google creates doodle to honor women

International Women's Day
  • Google wished women all across the world a happy International Women’s Day.
  • It is an annual event marked across the globe every year on March 8.
  • The topic for this year’s Women’s Day Google doodle is the support that women show to other women.

International Women’s Day is being celebrated today (Wednesday) around the world. It is an annual event marked across the globe every year on March 8 to celebrate the achievements of women and push for their rights to progress.

On International Women’s Day, Google, which has a habit of honoring significant occasions with innovative doodles, also paid respect to women around the world.

The topic for this year’s Women’s Day Google doodle is the support that women show to other women.

Stories

“The stories within each ‘GOOGLE‘ letter show only a handful of the many areas in which women around the world help and improve each other’s quality of life,” the internet titan explained.

Alyssa Winans, a Doodle Artist, created the artwork. It depicts influential women who advocate for progress on issues important to all women’s lives, women who come together to explore, learn, and rally for their rights, female primary carers to people from all walks of life, and women who are critical support systems for one another in motherhood.

Winans explained her inspiration for the painting, saying that she focused on focusing on all the ways she has received support from different women in her life while keeping this year’s subject in mind.

She, on the other hand, stated that a single person’s life experiences cannot encapsulate the entirety of what it is to be a woman because there is so much more to women and womanhood.

According to Winans, the idea of two ladies feeding their babies in various ways was a significant component of the illustration. This was done to demonstrate support for women who are new mothers and are dealing with the complications of parenting whether it comes to breastfeeding “in public” or at work.

“I hope it’s merely a jumping-off point to reflect on how broad, complex, nuanced, and powerful the notion of womanhood is,” Winans said about the message she wants to give to the world via her doodle.

Google wished women all across the world a happy International Women’s Day for their assistance in all facets of life.

Selena Gomez finally reacted to Miley Cyrus

Selena Gomez
  • Nick dated several celebrities and singers, including Selena Gomez.
  • Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez grew up together.
  • Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas reportedly split amicably and continued to share a warm equation.

Singer Nick Jonas is currently married to Priyanka Chopra Jonas, a desi girl. The couple recently welcomed their adorable daughter and are having the time of their lives. Prior to marrying Priyanka, Nick dated several celebrities and singers, including Selena Gomez. Although their romance did not last long, it was said to have irritated a feud between Selena and Miley Cyrus.

Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez literally grew up together, but that doesn’t mean they were friends. Notably, the calm-down singer and Nick dated briefly in 2008 before splitting up after only a few months. Prior to that, Nick dated Flowers singer Miley Cyrus, which, according to reports, was one of the reasons for their feud.

Back in the year 2016, Selena Gomez while talking to a magazine revealed that the feud was just a misunderstanding between two lovestruck teens. The Calm Down singer said, “We never feuded. We both liked the same guy when we were 16. It was just a Hilary Duff- Lindsay Lohan thing. Oh, my God, we like the same boy! We are not completely settled in our own lives.” The statement came post Miley’s youtube dig at the singer for which she later apologised.

For the uninitiated, Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas reportedly split amicably and continued to share a warm equation. However, the reason for their breakup remained a mystery. Notably, Sel began her on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber the same year.

Now, all three of them have moved on in their lives and as they say, ‘All is well that ends well’. Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez have no ill will towards one another and have served as major queen goals to all young women.

Michael Jackson biopic to get over $21 Million

Michael Jackson
  • The biopic ‘Michael,’ about Michael Jackson will receive over $21 million in California.
  • ‘Michael’ will generate $120 million in “qualified” in-state spending.
  • Jackson’s nephew Jaafar playing the lead in the film.

The biopic ‘Michael,’ about Michael Jackson, will receive over $21 million in California tax credits, according to the state’s film commission.

According to reports, the California Film Commission announced the latest round of credit allocations, totaling $81.7 million for 24 projects. According to the commission, ‘Michael’ will generate $120 million in “qualified” in-state spending, which is more than any other project in the tax credit program’s 14-year history.

The film was announced in January, with Jackson’s nephew Jaafar playing the lead. The executors of the Jackson estate, John Branca and John McClain, are producing alongside Graham King.

According to reports, the project has sparked controversy. Dan Reed, the director of ‘Leaving Neverland,’ the documentary that accused Jackson of s*xually assaulting two young boys, slammed the new film in a Guardian column, saying it will “glorify a man who r*ped children.”

The state film commission also announced that ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ will receive $13.8 million, and an untitled Disney live-action film will receive $11.3 million. ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ had been awarded $19.6 million last August, but subsequently withdrew that request and reapplied.

The $21.1 million awarded to ‘Michael’ is one of the state’s largest credit allocations ever. California has previously given $22.3 million to ‘Bumblebee’, $21.8 million to ‘Space Jam 2’ and $21.4 million to ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. Only the first $100 million in “qualified” in-state spending is eligible for the state’s 20% tax credit.
