As per the details, Judge Asad Ali from Accountability court number 1 heard the case where the court has already given a verdict to seize the properties of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Moreover, the petition suggested that it would be better to put the possible auction of the properties on hold for a period as the Shamim agricultural farms and properties are held by tenants.

The petitioner contended that the auction would affect the rights of the tenants of Shamim Agricultural Farm. It is pleaded that the inheritance of the properties has been transferred to the court should reconsider the judgment of confiscation of the properties.

Pakistan urges UN Human Rights Council to stop India’s ‘crimes’ in Kashmir

Pakistan urges UN

GENEVA: Pakistan has called on the UN Human Rights Council not to remain “a passive bystander” as India intensifies its state-directed suppression of Kashmiri people’s fundamental rights and freedoms.

“In the face of eerie silence by some members of the (Human Rights) Council, the crimes of self-professed largest democracy are getting entrenched, and its sense of impunity being rewarded,” Ambassador Khalil Hashmi, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN’s offices in Geneva, said in the 47-member Council’s general debate which began in Geneva on Tuesday.

He reiterated Pakistan’s call on the Council members to counsel India to rescind its unlawful actions, halt the illegal demographic changes, put an end to human rights abuses, allow access to independent observers and urge the UN Human Rights Office, OHCHR, to issue an updated assessment on Jammu & Kashmir.

“To lend credence to the notion of accountability, the Council members should act on the recommendations of the two OHCHR reports for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry on Occupied Jammu & Kashmir,” the Pakistani envoy said.

“This Council cannot afford to remain a passive bystander in the face of independent evidence of India’s grave violations. Silence and shielding an oppressor is undermining the universal cause of human rights and further eroding the credibility of this Council. ”

Action on part of the Human Rights Council was necessary as India continues to stonewall calls for access, he said, adding it continues to alter the demographic structure of the occupied region in blatant defiance of international law; it continues to draw a physical and digital iron curtain; it continues to kill, maim, torture, arbitrarily detain and forcibly disappear the Kashmiri youth, women and elderly- by invoking the canard of “terrorism”.

To hide these crimes, Ambassador Hashmi said, India has muzzled local media, silenced civil society, and denied access to independent observers, pointing out that not a single member of Indian security forces has ever been held to account due to pervasive impunity afforded by draconian laws, a pliant judiciary, and hand-picked local administration.

Ambassador Hashmi also delivered a statement to the Council on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“The human rights situation in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir remains a matter of deep anguish for us,” the OIC statement said, urging India to implement the applicable UN Security Council resolutions as well as recommendations addressed to it in OHCHR’s two Kashmir reports.

“We reiterate our strong demand for reversal of all illegal and unilateral measures taken on or after 5 August 2019, including reversal of illegal demographic changes in the occupied territory,” it said.

Parliamentarians to play role in addressing challenge of climate change: Speaker NA

Speaker NA

ISLAMABAD: Speaker of National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Tuesday said legislators of various parliaments in the world would have to understand their role and contribute to effective mitigation of climate change’s challenge which is a real threat to human security.

He stated this while addressing the “Third Inter-Parliamentary Union Regional Seminar on Achieving Sustainable Development Goals for Parliaments of Asia-Pacific” here at the Parliament House.

The Speaker said that Pakistan is ranked eighth among the countries most vulnerable to climate change despite contributing less than one percent to global emissions. He said the recent flood in Pakistan caused irreparable loss of precious lives and destruction to basic infrastructure including roads, houses, schools, and basic health units.

He said that Pakistan is hosting this crucial seminar for the Asia Pacific nations at a critical juncture as only a few days ago, we faced record monsoon rains and melting glaciers in northern mountains that triggered floods, which have killed more than 1,391 people; displaced 33 million people; sweeping away houses, roads, railway tracks, bridges, livestock and crops worth around 30 Billion US Dollars.

He urged the participants to avail this opportunity to especially focus their deliberations on this grave global climate change challenge to human security.

He said that floods come as the climate emergency continues to wreak havoc across the globe. Europe is confronting its worst drought in 500 years while China is facing an unprecedented heat wave that has dried up rivers and lakes and in Mississippi, USA, residents were told to evacuate the city as it braces for more flooding.

The Speaker said that the Climate Change Risk Index of 2021 reports that Pakistan is ranked eighth among countries most vulnerable to climate crisis despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions.

He said that e UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently visited our flood-ravaged areas on the weekend and urged the community to stand with Pakistan in this time of crisis.

The Speaker said that UN Secretary-General called upon G20 countries to immediately boost their national greenhouse gas emission reduction targets every year and for new mechanisms for debt relief for climate-vulnerable countries such as Pakistan.

The Speaker said that irreparable loss of precious lives and destruction of even the basic infrastructure such as roads, houses, schools, and basic health units by the recent floods, makes it imperative for the Parliament of Pakistan to leave no stone unturned in our efforts of Rescue, Rehabilitation and Rebuilding.

Pakistan’s flood situation becoming threatening, Masood Khan says; urges more int’l help

Masood Khan calls Pakistani-American physicians ‘valuable asset’

WASHINGTON: With the flood situation in Pakistan becoming increasingly menacing, Ambassador Masood Khan has urged the world community to step up their help to enable Islamabad to cope with the climate-induced disaster that has left behind a trail of destruction.

“Since these floods are a direct consequence of deadly climate change, we would hope that the international community, particularly the developed countries and the United Nations, will step forward to give climate support to Pakistan,” he said in an interview with TRT, a Turkish broadcaster, adding that the cumulative damage of climate change would be astronomical.

“It is a very difficult situation; we have disasters within the mega disaster; we have water-borne diseases, displaced people, with crops and cattle destroyed,” the Ambassador said.

Noting that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had put the estimated cost for the total loss and damages at more than $30 billion, he said, while Pakistanis have resorted to their resourcefulness to cope with the calamity, “We can’t do it alone and therefore appealed to the international community to help us.”

Masood Khan thanked the UN chief for his visit to Pakistan and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for leading the effort to mobilize the Turkish government and society to support the affected Pakistani people, the Ambassador said that while they (Pakistanis) have resorted to their resourcefulness to cope with the disaster, “We can’t do it alone and, therefore, appealed to the international community to help us.”

Pakistan, he said, was vulnerable even before the floods as it was facing food insecurity issues due to situation in Ukraine. “We were trying to scramble our economy towards viability and we were succeeding. But now there is this huge disruption.”
