Rooney excited for challenge as new DC United head coach

Wayne Rooney
  • DC United stands 5-10 with two drawn on 17 points, sharing last overall in the 28-team league.
  • United fired coach Hernan Losada after six matches, replacing him with interim manager Chad Ashton.
  • Rooney played for DC United from July 2018 to October 2019.

Former England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney was named on Tuesday as the new head coach of DC United and has been tasked with reviving the moribund Major League Soccer team.

It was a reunion for the 36-year-old British icon, who played for DC United from July 2018 to October 2019, scoring 25 goals in 52 appearances before leaving to serve as a player and coach at England’s Derby County.

“To come back to MLS, to DC United, was an exciting challenge for me and something which I feel can develop me as a coach, but also the team needs to improve,” Rooney said.

“I’m an ambitious person. One day I want to manage at the top level. This is part of that process.”

DC United stands 5-10 with two drawn on 17 points, sharing last overall in the 28-team league. United fired coach Hernan Losada after six matches, replacing him with interim manager Chad Ashton.

“I really believe with my abilities to develop young players, we can really get this club back to successful ways again,” Rooney said.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work but that’s what I’m here to do and really improve the team.”

Rooney resigned as coach of Derby County last month after the team’s relegation to League One, England’s third-tier, opening the door to his MLS return.

“I’ve seen a few (news articles) certainly back in England on this as possibly a backward step in my managerial career,” Rooney said.

“I really find that disrespectful to this league.

“I feel the experience of guiding Derby County over the past 18 months has been great in my development as a coach.”

DC United hasn’t made the playoffs since Rooney helped the squad get there in 2018 and 2019 as a player, but must duplicate his revival of a league-worst club from four years ago to reach the post-season.

“There a mentality I have to put into the players so when they go on the pitch they become a real horrible team to play against,” Rooney said.

“That’s exciting. That’s what I plan on doing.

“We know it’s going to be difficult. We have to go on a good run. They know how I want to play. If we can do that right off, then why can’t we make the playoffs?”

Philadelphia beat DC United 7-0 last week, matching the league record for the largest margin of defeat.

“I believe they have been underperforming,” Rooney said. “I believe there’s a lot more for those players to give.”

DC United’s next match is Wednesday at home against Columbus but Rooney awaits final visa paperwork before his official coaching role can begin. DC’s following match is Saturday at Minnesota.

Rooney’s family will stay in England but he said, “That’s not an issue whatsoever,” and that he had support from his wife to take the job.

“I’m excited to bring my skills,” Rooney said.

“It’s going to be a lot of hard work I have to put in. I’ll have demands and principles the players will have to stick by.

“I want players to come to this club who are hungry. I’m committed to getting the best out of myself and the players.”

‘Excited’ players

DC United captain Steve Birnbaum was a former Rooney teammate and says players are looking forward to learn from Rooney.

“The group is excited to have him,” Birnbaum said.

“We know the energy and passion that he brought as a player and we know he’s going to do the same thing as a coach.

“The guys are excited to learn from him. He has a soccer IQ that’s probably second to none. The group is extremely excited to see him uplift us.”

United chief executive Jason Levien noted that the club produced 40 points in 20 matches after Rooney’s arrival as a player to make the 2018 playoffs.

“I’ve told Wayne we expect the same this time,” Levien said. “But even if we don’t do that well, I think we’re going to quite well. I think you’re going to see a real uplift in our play.

“Having Wayne around has put a pep in everyone’s step. We’re excited about the future.”

Australia lose top Test championship spot after Sri Lanka defeat

Australia vs Sri Lanka
  • Australia lost their top World Test Championship position.
  • Dinesh Chandimal scores maiden Test double ton for Sri Lanka.
  • Kane Williamson’s New Zealand won the inaugural Test championship final last year.

Australia lost their top World Test Championship position to South Africa Tuesday after they were defeated by Sri Lanka in the second match of their series.

The island nation completed a stunning innings and 39-run victory over captain Pat Cummins’ Australia in Galle on Monday to end the two-match series level at 1-1.

The result shook up the championship table with Sri Lanka climbing to third as the race to make the final hots up.

“South Africa take over as the new leader on the latest standings with a win-loss percentage of 71.43 percent, while Australia drop to second with 70 percent after their first Test loss in the current period,” the International Cricket Council said.

“Sri Lanka are now firmly in the mix for the World Test Championship final next year, with their win helping them jump in front of Pakistan, India and West Indies.”

Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya had a dream debut with a match haul of 12 wickets and veteran batsman Dinesh Chandimal stood out with an unbeaten 206 — his maiden Test double ton.

Cummins termed the loss a “reality check” for a team that won the opener inside three days but were then bundled out on the fourth day of the second match.

“The reality is some of our players haven’t been here before. So you could call it a reality check, because it’s a first experience,” Australian coach Andrew McDonald said, agreeing with the skipper.

“It’s a sample size of one. We have the opportunity to learn from that. And we’ll take that. But we learned a hell of a lot in the first game too.

“You can learn through winning and you can learn through defeat too.”

Australia’s next Test outing is at home against West Indies in November, while Sri Lanka host Pakistan for a two-match series starting Saturday.

Kane Williamson’s New Zealand won the inaugural Test championship final last year, beating India in Southampton.

Maestro of Alpine climbing dies aged 99

Marcel Remy
  • Marcel Remy, one of the oldest active climbers in the world, has died aged 99.
  • In 2017, at the age of 94, he conquered the Miroir d’Argentine.
  • Even in his late 90s, he would still tackle the 16-metre high wall.

Marcel Remy, the grand old man of Swiss Alpinists and one of the oldest active climbers in the world, has died aged 99, newspapers and several specialist websites reported Wednesday.

“For almost a century you have inspired people all over the world with your unwavering passion for climbing,” his sponsor, the Swiss mountain sports company Mammut, said on Instagram.

“Merci pour tout (Thanks for everything), Marcel. Climb on in peace.”

In 2017, at the age of 94, Remy conquered the Miroir d’Argentine, a Swiss climbing classic with its 500 metres (1,640 feet) of limestone wall.

Even in his late 90s, he would still tackle the 16-metre high wall at the indoor climbing centre in Villeneuve, southwest Switzerland, with his oldest son Claude.

Climbing was always a major part of Remy’s life. Brought up on tales of the mountains, he loved discovering the great outdoors and the Alps became his playground.

Remy worked on the Swiss railways and spent all his free time in the mountains, taking his two sons with him.

“He was a tough dad. With him it was do or die, whatever the conditions,” his son Claude told AFP last year.

Remy passed on his passion for the Alps. Claude and his brother Yves are also well-known in the climbing world.

In August 2020, the top French climbing magazine Grimper devoted 40-odd pages to the family’s exploits and the most impressive climbs they accomplished together.

In an interview with AFP in June last year, Remy said the secret to his longevity was pacing himself.

“It’s the rhythm that you have to take — for breathing, for the movements,” he explained.

“If I go beyond that, there’s a price to pay afterwards. I can’t tell you exactly what, but either the shoulders or the muscles. It’s better to go calmly, without over-exertion — and then it works.

“It gives me a lot of pleasure because you have to work, think and surpass yourself; that’s what suits me well.”

And he added: “If I’m still enjoying it and feeling good, why not carry on?”

Manchester United beat Liverpool in Bangkok

Manchester United beat Liverpool
  • Manchester United defeated Liverpool in preseason matches in Bangkok.
  • Jadon Sancho, Fred, and Anthony Martial all scored for United.
  • Erik ten Hag’s first game in charge ended with a heavy win over Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Manchester United defeated Liverpool in a decisive friendly victory to start the preseason in Bangkok, Thailand. This was Erik ten Hag’s first game in charge.

Jadon Sancho, Fred, and Anthony Martial all scored goals in the first half to put United up 3-0, and they displayed greater focus the entire time.

To the pleasure of the Thai fans, Facundo Pellistri added a fourth late on as United played with precision.

However, this game revealed that Manchester United are further ahead than Liverpool in their preseason preparations, which is to be expected given that Jurgen Klopp’s team finished their season so late due to the Champions League final.

Both teams gave plenty of minutes to fringe players and young players.

However, this game is never a friendly since Erik ten Hag will benefit from the victory, and Klopp won’t be pleased with some of the individual performances.

Djokovic to open tennis courts at Bosnian ‘pyramids’

Djokovic to open tennis courts
  • Novak Djokovic inaugurates tennis courts at a ‘pyramid park’ in Bosnia.
  • The Serb regularly visits hill town of Visoko to recharge his batteries.
  • The Serb has visited several times and meditated at the site.

Recently-crowned Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic arrived in Bosnia on Wednesday to inaugurate tennis courts at a ‘pyramid park’ that he regularly visits to recharge his batteries.

The tennis star, known for his new-age spiritual interests, is fond of a hill town of Visoko, where thousands flock every year to what some believe are an ancient man-made pyramid complex with healing powers — a claim rejected by scientists.

The 35-year-old Serb, who claimed his 21st Grand Slam title on Sunday, visited the site for the first time in 2020 and called it a “paradise on earth”.

He has returned to the “Bosnian Pyramids of the Sun” complex at least four times, either alone or with his family, to be always warmly welcomed by its founder Semir Osmanagic.

Bosnian businessman and ancient civilisation afficionado Osmanagic said the idea to construct a regional tennis training centre was born during Djokovic’s last visit in March.

“We have agreed to build in our park two courts for training of the top level players, one hard-court and another one with clay surface” Osmanagic told reporters recently.

The idea is to offer players and Djokovic’s friends the chance to train and have free accomodation, he explained.

“We also want to organise here a Pyramid Cup for players from the region and want notably to motivate youngsters to play tennis and other sports”.

The inauguration will be marked by all-day events with several exhibition matches, notably by Djokovic and Croatian Ivan Dodig, world number 17.

Upon the arrival, Djokovic visited the new courts and went for a walk into a pine forest, which is a part of the park, with his host, according to an AFP journalist.

Osmanagic, a self-styled archaeologist, has been claiming for the past two decades that he has discovered several pyramides built by a mysterious civilisation close to Visoko.

For the past few years his teams have been also clearing underground tunnels near the “Pyramids of the Sun” and he boasts of its beneficial effects on the health of visitors.

Djokovic has meditated at the site and during each visit walked kilometres of “energy” tunnels, which are according to archaeologists, an ancient gold mine.

In 2020, Djokovic told AFP he felt “regenerated” after the visit.

“I know there are many doubts and dilemmas about the authenticity” of the place, he said.

But “in order to fully understand what is going on here… you have to come”.

Djokovic said on Monday it was unlikely he will feature in this year’s US Open as he continues to refuse to be vaccinated against coronavirus.

Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka surrounded by uncertainty

Pakistan tour to Sri Lanka
  • Babar Azam-led team completed a three-day warm-up match in Colombo.
  • Sri Lanka is in discussions with the IMF after defaulting on $51 billion in foreign debt.
  • To cut down on commuting, the government shut down non-essential offices and schools.

Pakistan’s visit to Sri Lanka is uncertain in light of the island nation’s declaration of a state of emergency on Wednesday.

Prior to their two-match Test series against the home team, the Babar Azam-led team just completed a three-day warm-up match.

No decision has been made to cancel the tour, according to a PCB official. “PCB and Sri Lanka Cricket are always in contact,” the official added.

“The series can be delayed if the situation is not under control.”

The first game is scheduled to start on July 16 in Galle, while the second game will start on July 24 in Colombo.

It should be mentioned that following months of widespread protests over an economic crisis, hundreds of people flocked to the prime minister’s office when the president of the nation traveled to the Maldives.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official mansion in Colombo moments before tens of thousands of demonstrators overran it over the weekend, but he promised to step down on Wednesday to pave the way for a “peaceful transition of power.”

In order to prevent protesters from overrunning the compound, police used tear gas, and authorities proclaimed a national state of emergency “to deal with the crisis in the country,” according to the prime minister’s spokesperson Dinouk Colombage.

To “contain the situation,” according to a senior police officer, police put an indefinite curfew in place in the Western Province, which includes Colombo.

Sri Lanka is in discussions with the IMF for a potential rescue after defaulting on its $51 billion in foreign debt in April.

The island’s already limited gasoline supplies are almost gone.

To cut down on commuting and save gasoline, the government has mandated the shutdown of non-essential offices and schools.

Hockey Olympian Naveed Alam’s first death anniversary

Hockey Olympian Naveed Alam
  • Naveed Alam passed away on June 13, 2021.
  • He was a member of the Hockey World Cup-winning squad in 1994.
  • His condition reportedly declined after chemotherapy, and he was moved to the ICU.

Former Hockey World Cup winner and Olympian Naveed Alam passed away, on June 13, 2021. It’s been a year since the Hockey legend left this mortal world after a prolonged battle with cancer.

He was a member of the World Cup-winning squad in 1994.

The renowned athlete was receiving treatment at Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore after receiving a blood cancer diagnosis.

His condition reportedly declined after chemotherapy, and he was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU).

Prior to the therapy, which was expected to cost four million rupees, he made an effort to get the attention of the federal and provincial authorities.

In a letter to Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore, the Sindh government pledged to cover all costs associated with Olympian Naveed Alam’s care.

The Bangladeshi, Chinese, and Pakistani teams were coached by the athlete that competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Prior to changing course due to a difference of opinion on a few matters, he also served as acting director of development for the Pakistan Hockey Federation.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Alam managed Pakistan’s hockey squad. After Pakistan’s eighth-place finish at the 2008 Summer Olympics, he was still embroiled in a legal dispute with the PHF elections, in which Qasim Zia and Asif Bajwa were chosen as president and secretary, respectively.

Champions League final chaos caused by “Dysfunctions”, not supporters: French enquiry

Champions League Final
  • French Senate enquiry concludes problems were in the organization rather than Liverpool supporters.
  • Fake tickets, the late arrival of supporters at the stadium, or the presence of thousands of fans without tickets were discounted as the main causes.
  • The fiasco was considered a national embarrassment for France.

A French Senate enquiry into chaotic scenes at the Champions League final in May in Paris concluded Wednesday the problems were caused by a “string of dysfunctions” in the organisation, rather than Liverpool supporters as claimed by the government.

“These dysfunctions were at every level, not only during the implementation (during the game) but also during preparations in advance,” the co-chair of the enquiry Laurent Lafon told reporters at a press conference.

The “dysfunctions” included a failure to anticipate how supporters would arrive at the stadium due to a transport strike, inadequate instructions and the use of police checkpoints that caused pressure points on the way to the game.

The fact-finding mission led by two senators has heard from witnesses since the Liverpool-Real Madrid game on May 28 which was marred by a delayed kick-off, crushes, teargas and street crime.

The enquiry discounted the issue of fake tickets, the late arrival of supporters at the stadium, or the presence of thousands of fans without tickets as the main causes.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin had suggested all of these as factors to explain the fiasco, which was a national embarrassment for France.

“It’s not the number of people around the stadium that is the cause of these dysfunctions,” Lafon added.

Rohit Sharma tops the elite list

Rohit Sharma tops the elite list
  • Rohit Sharma became the first Indian to hit 250 sixes in ODIs.
  • Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami starred with the ball for India.
  • India’s 10-wicket victory gave them a 1-0 series lead.

India’s captain Rohit Sharma scored an explosive unbeaten 76 to help India defeat England in the opening ODI at The Oval on Tuesday by chasing down their 111-run goal in 18.2 overs.

He has since surpassed Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting, and Kane Williamson to hold the record for most ODI runs scored in England by a visiting hitter.

Currently, Rohit has seven hundreds and just as many half-centuries in 1411 runs in ODIs in England. Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, ranks second on the list with 1393 runs.

During the game at the Kennington Oval, Rohit Sharma also became the first Indian to hit 250 sixes in ODIs.

He and Dhawan’s unbroken 114-run stand allowed them to surpass the 5000-run threshold in ODI opening partnerships.

As an opening duo, Rohit and Dhawan have so far stitched together 5108 runs, and they plan to increase that total as the series goes on.

The two are currently the fourth-most productive opening tandem in the format, trailing only the West Indies duo of Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge by 42 runs.

Rohit Sharma chose to field after winning the toss in the game.

England was bowled out for 110 thanks to the outstanding opening performance of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

Shami came back with three wickets while Bumrah claimed six. As the Indian pacers ran England into the ground, Prasidh Krishna also contributed with one wicket.

Despite the fact that Rohit and Dhawan batted in difficult circumstances, they made the chase appear easy, and India’s 10-wicket victory gave them a 1-0 series lead.

Sterling confirms Man City departure

Sterling confirms Man City departure.
  • Raheem Sterling announces his resignation from Manchester City.
  • Sterling was acquired by City from Liverpool in 2015 for £49 million.
  • Transfer to Chelsea is expected to be completed within the next 24 hours.

Raheem Sterling announced his resignation from Manchester City and stated he was leaving the team as “a man.”

A £50 million transfer of the 27-year-old to Premier League rival Chelsea is anticipated within the next 24 hours.

On his social media accounts, England forward sent a touching farewell message to his former teammates as well as the club’s staff and supporters.

“I was 20 when I landed in Manchester. I depart today a man, “Sterling replied.

A lifetime of memories, 11 major trophies, and seven seasons.

Sterling was acquired by City from Liverpool in 2015 for £49 million. He went on to win four Premier League championships and score 131 goals in 339 appearances.

Sterling, who has received 77 England caps, will be Chelsea’s first significant acquisition following the Todd Boehly-led takeover.

“I am grateful for the ups and downs,” he said, “because it’s the downs that have tested my fortitude and will and allowed me to stand here in front of you as the best version of myself.”

Sterling will now join the Chelsea team, which took off on Saturday for a preseason tour of the United States.

The five-year contract with an additional year’s option for Sterling is likely to be worth up to £50 million in total, including add-ons. Major foreign teams were interested in signing Sterling, who had one year left on his City contract.

Following the departures of Andreas Christensen to Barcelona and Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid, Chelsea is also looking to bolster its defense.

They are also interested in City’s Nathan Ake, a 27-year-old Dutch defender, as well as Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, a 31-year-old center-back from Senegal. Sterling improves Chelsea’s offensive options.

After Romelu Lukaku returned to Inter Milan on a season-long loan, Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel sought to strengthen his offensive options.

With 15 goals across all competitions, the Belgian striker led the Blues in scoring last season, just ahead of Kai Havertz (14) and Mason Mount (13).

Only Sergio Aguero (124) has scored more goals for City since Pep Guardiola took over as manager of the team in 2016. Sterling (120).

Last season, Sterling made 30 Premier League games and scored 13 goals, helping City win their fourth league championship and his 11th major trophy overall in seven seasons.

But the acquisition of Jack Grealish last summer, as well as the arrival this summer of strikers Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez at Etihad Stadium, limited his opportunities.

During both legs of Real Madrid’s elimination in the Champions League semifinals, as well as the thrilling season-ending match against Aston Villa, Sterling sat on the sidelines.

He did, however, help City mount a spectacular comeback on the final day by assisting Ilkay Gundogan’s vital first goal as City rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 and edge Liverpool for the league title.

Leeds & Barcelona reach agreement for Raphinha

Leeds & Barcelona reach agreement
  • Raphinha has agreed a deal to join Barcelona from Leeds United.
  • The 25-year-old is worth an initial 58 million euros (£49 million).
  • Raphina’s transfer cost could potentially reach £54.7 million with add-ons.

Raphinha, a forward for Leeds United, has agreed to a deal to join Barcelona.

The transfer for the 25-year-old playmaker from Brazil is worth an initial 58 million euros (£49 million).

A “principal agreement” had been reached, according to both clubs, subject to the player passing a medical.

Raphinha appeared in 65 Premier League games over the course of two seasons at Elland Road, contributing 12 assists in addition to 17 goals.

Jesse Marsch, the head coach of Leeds, had earlier announced the player’s departure.

Marsch remarked during the team’s tour in Australia, “I’m hopeful for him to get this deal done because I know it’s his goal to play for Barcelona.”

Prior to Barcelona showing interest in the player, Chelsea appeared to be the player’s destination.

The former Rennes player is believed to have had interest from Premier League teams Arsenal and Spurs, but the Catalan club has always been his first choice.

According to Marsch, the money from the sale of midfielder Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City and the purchase of Raphinha “allows us to take the club on the next stages we need to go in the future.”

According to reports, Raphina’s transfer cost to the Nou Camp might potentially total 65 million euros (£54.7 million) with add-ons.

Raphinha has two years left on his Elland Road deal after joining Leeds for £17 million in 2020 from French club Rennes. Based on the revenue Leeds generates, it is thought that the French club is entitled to a sell-on charge.

In the hopes that Raphinha’s future would be determined quickly, Marsch left Raphinha out of the Whites’ traveling group for a three-game trip to Australia.

However, the winger joined the rest of the team for training at the club’s Thorp Arch facility.

Australia, India to play five-match series in next FTP cycle

Australia, India to play
  • Australia and India will play five Test matches between 2024 and 2023.
  • The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series will be played back-to-back.
  • Five Tests will be played between the two nations not for the first time.

Five Test matches between Australia and India will be played back-to-back in the upcoming cycle of the Future Tours Program (FTP).

When India is slated to visit Australia in 2024, the enlarged bilateral engagement, which is played for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, will begin. The home series against India in 2023 will still consist of four Test matches and take place in February or March.

As the Australian team’s closest match to an Ashes series, former Australia captain Steve Waugh said, “I believe it’s a terrific initiative. Waugh participated in seven Test series against India, three of which he led.

For the Ashes trophy, Australia and England frequently face off across five Test matches. India will play Australia in a series that will consist of five Test matches, similar to how they played England in prior years across five home and away matches.

According to a recent article in The Australian, “It is a benefit for Australia, which is due to begin serious negotiations on another broadcast deal,” the expansion has a financial component.

The four Test matches are reportedly worth $400 million to Cricket Australia under the most recent TV agreement, which is one of the reasons the idea of the tourists departing in the middle of the 2020–21 season was so unsettling. The broadcasting income would increase dramatically with an additional Test match versus India every four years.

Various boards are putting the finishing touches on the following cycle of the FTP, which will go into effect following the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June 2023.

At the next International Cricket Council (ICC) annual convention in Birmingham, it is anticipated that it will be approved.

Only until the FTP is made public will India’s bilateral matches be known, however it is assumed that the redesigned series would begin in late 2024, when India will travel to Australia for a bilateral series.

Five Tests will be played between the two nations not for the first time. India has played three five-Test series in Australia, with the most recent being in 1991–1992, which Australia won 4-0.

India hosted Australia for five games in 1959 and 1969, and for six Test matches in the 1979–1980 series. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is currently held by India, who memorably won it in 2020–21.

Part of the current WTC, the four-Test 2023 home series is essential to both clubs’ hopes of advancing to the championship game. Prior to that, the Australian side will travel to India for six white-ball matches (three One Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals) in the months of September and October.

The teams’ participation in the ODIs has not yet been decided, though, because the T20 World Cup is in October.

ICC ODI Team Rankings: India surpass Pakistan

ICC ODI Team Rankings
  • India rose to third in the ODI rankings with their convincing 10-wicket victory against England.
  • Jasprit Bumrah took six wickets as England collapsed to the lowest ODI score (110).
  • If India loses the final two games of the series against England, they risk falling into fourth place.

After their convincing victory in the opening round of their three-match series against England at The Oval on Tuesday, India has surpassed Pakistan in the ICC ODI Team Rankings.

In the ICC ODI Team Rankings, India rose to third with their convincing 10-wicket victory against England.

India started the game in the fourth position with 105 points; after the game, they moved up to fourth place with 108 points, leaving Pakistan in last place with 106 points.

New Zealand continues to lead the rankings with 126 rating points, followed by England with 122.

With a six-wicket haul, Jasprit Bumrah was the main culprit as England collapsed to its lowest ODI score (110) against India.

Around Bumrah, the other pacers came together, with Prasidh Krishna grabbing one wicket and Mohammed Shami grabbing three.

In response, India defeated second-ranked England with 10 wickets and more than 31 overs remaining thanks to Rohit Sharma’s unbroken 58-ball score of 78.

With this victory, Rohit has now won all four of his ODI matches since being named the permanent captain.

Following a convincing victory over the West Indies last month, Pakistan edged India to the No. 4 slot in the rankings.

Australia dropped to third place as a result of their series loss to Sri Lanka. Their time at No. 3 was, however, brief as India quickly seized the position.

With the two remaining ODIs against England and the three-match series against West Indies later this month, India could increase their lead even further before Pakistan plays their next set of ODIs.

In contrast, if India loses the final two games of the series against England, they risk falling farther behind Pakistan and into fourth place.

In their upcoming one-day international match against the Netherlands in Rotterdam, Babar Azam’s team will play three 50-over games over the course of five days.

South Africa World Cup dreams take major hit

South Africa World Cup dreams
  • The upcoming cricket summer is already too packed, according to Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley.
  • South Africa will be replaced by a three-Test series in Melbourne and Sydney.
  • Cricket Australia is ninth in the Super League standings with 70 points from 12 games played.

The Proteas’ withdrawal from the three-match ODI series in Australia in January has hurt South Africa’s prospects of securing automatic qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

With just the top eight teams earning a spot in the 50-over competition in India the following year, the Proteas now occupy a perilous 11th spot in the Super League standings.

The Proteas requested that the games be moved so that the series would not conflict with their new domestic T20 competition. The three-match series in Australia was initially planned to begin in mid-January of the following year.

The upcoming cricket summer is already too packed, according to Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley, therefore more dates haven’t been able to be set.

Cricket South Africa won’t be able to play in the ODI series in January, he said, which was regrettable.

“Having said that, we are excited to welcome South Africa for the three-match Test series, which includes the Boxing Day and New Year’s Day Tests, as well as for the extensive international cricket schedule that will be played around Australia this summer.”

“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a record six touring teams for the Men’s and Women’s international series, the 12th BBL season, and the 8th WBBL season will all be included in this.”

“We are eager to welcome back cricket enthusiasts this summer.”

Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive Officer Pholetsi Moseki emphasized the significance of having all of their local players available for the new domestic T20 competition despite his disappointment that fresh dates for the series could not be secured.

“The CSA is always committed to upholding its bilateral agreements. Even while CSA is dedicated to upholding its obligations under the Future Tours Program, there may occasionally be unforeseeable events that would compromise this determination. With regard to the Australia tour, CSA contacted its counterpart months ago to reschedule the tour to times that would work for both parties.”

“The CSA provided four alternatives in that regard. Unfortunately, none of them were acceptable to Cricket Australia, much to our disappointment “explained Moseki.

“CSA has approved giving Australia the competition points from the ICC. While we are disappointed that we lost these important points, we are optimistic that our strong Proteas squad will earn enough points in the upcoming matches to guarantee automatic qualifying to the championship match in India next year.”

“Even though the CSA has found it difficult to make this choice, the future viability of our new T20 League depends on having all of our local players available for this intriguing new event on the CSA calendar.”

In the three-Test series, which includes the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, “CSA is looking forward to being hosted by Cricket Australia for an appealing blend of cricket.”

Prior to the end of the Super League season, South Africa has ODI series against England and India scheduled. They may also face the challenge of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in order to advance to the main event the following year.

With 70 points from 12 games, Australia is presently ninth in the Super League standings. Their next encounter is a three-match series against Zimbabwe that will start at the end of the next month.
