ISLAMABAD: Former caretaker Prime Minister Muhammad Mian Soomro has called for greater decision-making powers at the district and tehsil levels, saying bringing government closer to the people can strengthen governance and improve public services.
Soomro backed the devolution of administrative and decision-making authority to lower levels of government, arguing that decisions made closer to communities are more likely to address local needs and improve the delivery of public services.
He also called for mandatory finance awards at the provincial, district and tehsil levels to ensure resources are distributed transparently and fairly. He said local governments must have adequate financial resources to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
Soomro stressed the need for independent oversight, regular audits and strict accountability to ensure public funds are used properly. He said particular attention should be given to money allocated for schools, hospitals, roads, water supply and sewerage projects.
He said stronger local decision-making must go hand in hand with effective financial monitoring to prevent misuse of funds and ensure development projects deliver tangible benefits to communities.
According to Soomro, a system that combines greater authority at the local level with transparent funding and strict oversight could significantly improve governance and public service delivery.
He emphasized that empowering district and tehsil administrations would allow decisions to be made closer to the people while strengthening accountability over how public resources are spent.
