Arif Hassan Shares How People Mistake His Name With Other Public Figures

Arif Hassan
  • Arif Hassan discussed being mistaken for other well-known individuals.
  • Arif had limited prior acting experience.
  • Arif credited journalist Mohammed Hanif, for connecting him with Sarmad.

In the second episode of Sarmad Sultan Khoosat’s podcast, the renowned filmmaker and actor hosted Arif Hassan, the leading actor from his critically acclaimed film, “Zindagi Tamasha,” made an appearance. During their conversation, they discussed Arif’s journey to fame, starting with his breakthrough role as Rahat Khawaja in the film, and how many viewers and critics were unaware of his name and prior work in the field.

Arif began by introducing himself and shared that he often gets mistaken for other more famous Arif Hassans in Pakistan, including an established architect and town planner, and a retired Lieutenant General and President of the Pakistan Olympic Association. He humorously recounted an incident when a news channel mistook him for the town planner during a live television discussion about a building collapse.

Regarding his path to the arts, Arif confessed that he had limited acting experience before taking on the pivotal role in “Zindagi Tamasha.” He had only been involved in a few theater projects in the 1990s, which were long behind him by the time he started working on the 2019 film. He stated, “Arif Hassan is not at all an actor.”

Arif also revealed that his friend, writer, and journalist Mohammed Hanif, played a crucial role in connecting him with Sarmad, ultimately leading to their collaboration on the film. He empathized with his character, Rahat, who faces society’s backlash when a video of him dancing to a song becomes public, saying, “That person’s journey, how he was a happy and totally fine person and then he suddenly went into that state… I felt that.”

“Zindagi Tamasha,” released in 2019, received numerous awards at international film festivals, including Best Film at the UK Asian Film Festival, Asian World Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, and Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival. The film features Samiya Mumtaz, Eman Suleman, Nadia Afghan, and Adeel Afzal. It recently became available on YouTube for Pakistani audiences after a period of uncertainty.

Sarmad Khoosat Reveals His Thoughts On Success Of ‘Humsafar’

Sarmad Khoosat

Renowned Pakistani actor and director Sarmad Khoosat recently unveiled his passion project, Zindagi Tamasha, earlier in August. Now, Sarmad has engaged in an interview with the Directors Guild of Pakistan, sharing insights into his career-defining moments.

Participating in a conversation with Rafay Rashdi and Misbah Khalid for a series titled “The Director’s Chair,” Sarmad delves into his directorial journey across diverse projects, highlighting how Humsafar played a pivotal role in paving the path for more ambitious undertakings like Manto.

During the interview, the Pardes actor emphasizes the significance of the path one must traverse to establish themselves as a storyteller within the local industry. He underscores the need for proper educational degrees and programs to provide aspiring directors with a foundation, explaining, “The freedom you will achieve from an educational degree is not something you would get in the practical field. Starting off in the field runs the risk of young talent wanting to live up to a certain directorial style, or to measure success based off of YouTube likes, or who makes the most money.”

When prompted about the projects closest to his heart, Sarmad singles out two: Humsafar and Manto – each for distinct reasons. He notes that both projects achieved success through vastly different avenues of comparison. While Humsafar, despite being mainstream with actors Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, may not have been his most passionate endeavor, its success granted him the leverage to pursue more provocative projects. Sarmad states, “It is important to get that kind of validation, but what you do with that validation [matters]; I used that validation to earn the freedom to make Manto.”

Regarding Manto, Sarmad reveals that this project holds a special place in his heart. Despite reportedly earning less than half of what he garnered from his serial, he worked on Manto as an actor, director, additional screenwriter, editor, and sometimes project manager. He elaborates, “I think the project is close to my heart because I had established an emotional connection with it. So, when today I look back at it, of course, it gave me financial damage, of course, it gave me a lot of heartache [and] trauma, but it is very close to my heart and when I think of its success, of course, I think of Humsafar.”

Throughout the 30-minute discussion, the director of Zindagi Tamasha attributes his achievements to recognizing the value of believing in the narrative one aspires to convey. Concluding the interview, he remarks, “Storytellers are dreamers. They might believe that their story is very good, but that belief is very important. To be that foolish, to be a dreamer, to take that leap of faith, I feel, is very important to telling stories … and it will perhaps keep our individual voices and styles alive.”

Twitter Buzzes Over Sarmad Khoosat’s “Zindagi Tamasha”

Zindagi Tamasha

After its YouTube release on Friday, the film “Zindagi Tamasha” by acclaimed filmmaker Sarmad Sultan Khoosat has been receiving immense praise on Twitter. Despite facing several challenges in reaching the audience, the movie’s captivating narrative and thought-provoking themes have deeply resonated with viewers.

Originally slated for a theatrical release in Pakistan on March 18, 2022, “Zindagi Tamasha” encountered unexpected hurdles due to its sensitive portrayal of certain themes and characters. As a result, the cinematic release was indefinitely postponed, generating curiosity among fans and Twitter users about the reasons behind its recurrent cancellations. However, amidst the controversies, many are hailing it as the “most authentic” Pakistani film ever.

Twitter users expressed their fascination, with one viewer questioning the film’s ban and praising its honest depiction of religious-hypocritical standards prevalent in Pakistani urban society. Another viewer commended the film’s content and Sarmad Khoosat’s exceptional filmmaking skills, becoming a lifelong fan after being moved by his earlier work, “Manto.”

The film’s ability to provoke thought and shed light on the complex social and cultural nuances of Pakistani society garnered admiration from viewers. People praised Khoosat’s courage in addressing sensitive subjects despite facing opposition, calling the film both horrifying and heartrending.

“Zindagi Tamasha” had already made a significant impact when it premiered at the 24th International Busan Film Festival in 2019, receiving accolades from the audience and critics alike. It continued to solidify its reputation as a compelling masterpiece of cinema, earning further recognition at the 2021 Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles.

‘Zindagi Tamasha’ Set To Release On YouTube & Vimeo

Zindagi Tamasha

This month marks Pakistan’s celebration of Independence and freedom, and filmmaker Sarmad Khoosat aims to liberate something as well. After facing numerous controversies and delays, the highly anticipated film “Zindagi Tamasha” is finally set to release worldwide on August 4, 2023, on Khoosat Films’ YouTube and Vimeo channels.

Despite encountering financial and intellectual setbacks, Khoosat, the director and co-producer of the film, urges the audience to approach it with an open heart and mind.

Initially, “Zindagi Tamasha,” produced by Khoosat Films, received international acclaim, garnering multiple awards and being Pakistan’s official submission for the Oscars. However, due to protests by religious groups, the film faced difficulties in reaching local audiences, despite clearance from all three censor boards. In honour of Pakistan’s Independence Month, the team has decided to directly release the film to the audience.

In an emotional statement, Sarmad expressed his desire to liberate the film during this month of independence, expressing regret for the controversies that overshadowed its original message. He acknowledged the collective sense of loss and perceived failure, emphasizing that it was not just his personal struggle but a reflection of the system’s failure to support independent voices.

Despite the challenges, Sarmad invites viewers to watch “Zindagi Tamasha” with an open mind, separating it from the controversies that surrounded it. He encourages viewers to evaluate the film based on its own merits and form their own opinions.
