Rabbani urges Sindh to withdraw appointment of bureaucrats as VCs

ISLAMABAD: Former Senate Chairman and Pakistan People’s Party leader Mian Raza Rabbani advised to withdraw the bill related to the appointment of bureaucrats as vice-chancellors of public sector universities in Sindh.

In his statement, Raza Rabbani said that non-PhD candidates and bureaucrats were allowed to become vice chancellors and added that this amendment will pave the way for appointing non-experts to the post of VC.

Raza Rabbani said that the amendment in the Sindh Universities and Institutes Laws Act should be withdrawn immediately. He said universities are independent and run under their respective laws, such appointments will affect this independence.

The former chairman of the senate said that such appointments will affect the academic quality and academic freedom of the universities. He advised the Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to withdraw this amendment.

It should be noted that there is a boycott of the teaching process in various universities against the decision to make bureaucrats as vice chancellors in Sindh.

The academic activities has suspended across the Sindh province on appeal of the Federation of All Pakistan Academic Staff Association Sindh (FAPWASA) against the decision to appoint bureaucrats as vice-chancellors.

Rabbani urges govt to summons Senate session to discuss Gaza situation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party leader Senator Raza Rabbani has said that a Senate session should be called immediately on the situation in Gaza.

Raza Rabbani has said in one of his statements that more than 1000 buildings were destroyed in Gaza while water, food and electricity supply of 2.3 million people in Gaza is cut off.

He said that the caretaker government is afraid that if the Senate meets, its actions in violation of Section 230 of the Election Act will be exposed.

Senator Raza Rabbani further said that the caretaker government cannot recruit in National Accountability Bureau(NAB) because these are fixed-term appointments, which the elected government cannot terminate.

He said that the caretaker government cannot privatize as privatization of government institutions has long-term effects. He said Pakistan International Airlines privatization cannot be decided by the caretaker cabinet and it can be seen by the Council of Common Interests(CCI).

ISLAMABAD: Former Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani has said that the caretaker government does not have the legal authority to sell the government shares of Reko Diq.

In his statement, senior PPP leader Raza Rabbani said that the sale of shares is a long-term economic decision, for which the caretaker government has no mandate.

He demanded that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should take notice of this matter.

Raza Rabbani said that the Election Commission is violating the constitution by not holding the election within 90 days, the delay in announcing the election date is creating political instability and economic uncertainty.

He said that the Election Commission no longer has an excuse for constituencies and ECP should immediately announce the date of the elections.

PBC strongly condemns amendment in Official Secret Act

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council(PBC) has strongly condemned the amendment of the Official Secret Act.

In a statement, the Pakistan Bar Council said that the federal government should immediately withdraw the Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill, which gave the secret agencies free rein to detain any citizen. The amendment exempts secret agencies from searching any civilian place without a search warrant.

The statement added that the amendment to the Official Secrets Act also contradicts the Constitution of Pakistan, and the Senate Standing Committee is expected to reject the proposed amendment.

It should be noted that when the Official Secrets Act amendment bill was presented in the Senate yesterday, the government allies along with the opposition were furious. Pakistan People’s Party’s Raza Rabbani tore several copies of the bills.

When the Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill was presented in the Senate, slogans of “No-No” were raised in the House. Senators including PTI, Jamaat-e-Islami, MQM, National Party, PK MAP including People’s Party’s Raza Rabbani, PML-N’s Dr. Afnan ullah protested against the bill.
