Sindh CM congratulates JPMC Dr Shahid on securing honorary degree from UK

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah congratulated Executive Director of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for being awarded an honorary degree in the UK for his outstanding performance in the field of surgery.

Prof. Dr. Shahid Rasool, the expert surgeon and executive director of Sindh’s largest government hospital, received an honorary degree from the Scottish Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

It may be noted that the membership and fellowship degrees of this institution are awarded based on examination performance.

There are two Royal Colleges in Scotland, the Royal College of Glasgow and the Royal College of Edinburgh. Professor Shahid Rasool has obtained his first degree from the Royal College of Glasgow and now has attained an honour from the latter.

The Sindh CM stated that Prof Shahid Rasool’s services in the Department of Surgery are exemplary. He said, “Prof Rasool has been an asset to Pakistan” and added that not only has he made the whole country proud, but has represented the government of Sindh at the esteemed college.

JSMU awards degrees to over 630 graduates

  • 40 medals were awarded to the best graduates and position holders of batch 2020 and 2021.
  • Former Senior Director Health Dr Birbal Genani and his daughter Sapna Kumari received degrees.
  • Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori urged students to respect their parents and teachers.

KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) held its 4th convocation at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Ground on Sunday to award degrees to over 630 successful graduates.

Forty medals were awarded to the best graduates and position holders of batch 2020 and 2021, out of which female students secured 24 medals. Saif Aslam Khan, a BDS student, received four medals for his exceptional performance.

Former Senior Director Medical and Health Services KMC Dr. Birbal Genani and his daughter Sapna Kumari received degrees simultaneously in the convocation.

On this occasion, Kamran Khan Tessori, the chief guest of the Convocation, addressed the students and asked them to respect and take good care of their parents and teachers who made them able to get this degree.

“There is a lot of talent in Pakistan and Pakistani youth are making the country proud all over the world”, he added.

Governor Sindh asked young people to consider Pakistan as their home and decorate it like their drawing room.

Minister Universities and Boards Ismail Rahu awarded degrees to graduates. In his speech, he asked the graduates to be true to their motherland and serve humanity with passion. He stressed on the importance Sindh Government attached to the education sector and pledged his support for educational projects in the province.

Speaking at the convocation, JSMU Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon shed light on the milestones the university has achieved in recent years and shared that the JSMU is at the forefront of public universities having been declared the best among the medical universities of Sindh in the UK’s Times Higher Education Impact Ranking for 2022. “JSMU is working on sustainable strategies and programmes to provide modern and relevant health education in the province of Sindh,” the Vice Chancellor said.

He also shared his vision for the establishment of Jinnah Sindh Medical City and further briefed about the various projects that JSMU is currently working on, including the establishment of a boys’ medical college, the School of Nursing, the acquisition of SESSI’s Valika hospital in Landhi, the establishment of the College of Physical Therapy, and collaboration with Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC).
