JSMU welcomes spring with a plantation drive

KARACHI: The Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Jinnah Sindh Medical University(JSMU) organized a Culture Repast and Spring Plantation Drive 2023.

The drive launched under the supervision of Student Advisor IPS and head of the department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Prof. Dr. Kiran Rafiq with event organizers Dr. Shaheen Perveen (Associate Professor), Dr. Fozia Israr (Associate Professor) and Ms. Zaib Kausar (Lecturer) IPS on March 18, 2023.

Principal IPS Prof. Dr. Huma Ali and Vice Principal IPS and Director Research JSMU Prof. Dr. Huma Sharif along with all faculty members participated in the Spring Plantation Drive, in which they planted dozens of trees on the premises of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences with the slogan of Go Green IPS.

Vice Chancellor JSMU Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon in his message explaining the importance of the plantation drive, said that trees have saved millions of lives in human history. One of the many benefits of trees is to provide a healthy environment for humans, he said.

He further said that a healthy environment can protect a person from many diseases.

The Vice-Chancellor appealed to the public to take part in the plantation drive to save the environment for a healthy future.

SMC Golden Jubilee celebrations will begin on Feb 27

  • Week-long celebrations will continue till March 4, 2023.
  • VC JSMU will inaugurate the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
  • SMC alumni from all over the world will participate.

KARACHI: On the completion of 50 years of Sindh Medical College (SMC), the week-long Golden Jubilee celebrations will begin on February 27 at Jinnah Sindh Medical University and will continue till Saturday, March 4, 2023.

Jinnah Sindh Medical University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Amjad Siraj Memon, will inaugurate the Golden Jubilee celebrations, after which Ex-Principals, Ex-Professors, and prominent Alumni will be honored with certificates of appreciation.

SMC alumni from all over the world will participate in the Golden Jubilee celebrations and will talk about the history and importance of SMC, memorable moments during education, and job opportunities around the world after graduation.

A panel discussion on the role of SMC towards the community will be held on February 28 under the supervision of Dr. Shahid Iqbal Danish.

Student’s day will be celebrated on 1st March, in which certificates will be given to students who are high achievers. Poetry and Speech competitions will be held and Skit on medical life will be presented.

Workshops will be organized on March 2, in which eminent doctors will participate.
Meet and Greet will be organized on March 3, in which Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon will deliver the welcome address. Afterwards, SMC Alumnus Dr. Jawed Suleman representing the

JSMU Alumni Association of North America will deliver his address. Later on, alumni will be taken for a guided campus tour at JSMU.

CME and Career Guidance sessions will be organized on March 4, in which Prof. Iqbal Afridi, Dr. Sarfaraz, Chairperson of Golden Jubilee Celebrations Dr. Rahat Naz, Dr. Naghmana Shafi, Dr. Younus M. Ismail, Dr. Yasmeen Zia, Dr. Mateen Allahwala, Dr. Shazia Maqsood, Dr. Osama, Dr. Hareem will express their views regarding job opportunities around the world.

JSMU welcomes new batches of MBBS and BDS

  • Students of both programmes were introduced with teachers.

KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University’s Sindh Medical College (SMC) and Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences (SIOHS) welcomed their new MBBS and BDS batches with orientation ceremonies.

The ceremonies began with Tilawat-e-Quran and National Anthem, followed by a warm welcome from the Dean and Principal SMC Prof Ghulam Sarwar Qureshi and Principal SIOHS Prof Zubair Ahmed Abbasi.

Afterwards, hundreds of participating students of both programmes were introduced to the University, teachers, course, facilities provided by the university and code of conduct. Other important issues were also brought to light.

Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon welcomed the new students through video link and said that today you have achieved an important milestone in your career. Both medical and dental fields are related to mankind and with your admission in JSMU, you have been connected with the profession of serving humanity, he said.

Registrar Dr Azam Khan administered the oath to the new entrants instilling in them a sense of duty and allegiance to the noble profession of medicine.

On this occasion, Dean and Principal of Sindh Medical College Prof Sarwar Qureshi, congratulated the students and said that JSMU is one of the best universities in Pakistan, the students who have graduated from the University are making the country proud by serving all over the world. He hoped that one day these new entrants would also become shining stars in the fields of Medical and Dental Sciences.

The guest of honour at the BDS reception, Prof Mervyn Hosein, addressed the students and said that they had entered professional life and will learn to live together in a society alongwith education because doctors are taught about humanity. He described the experience of entering a medical college as a life-changing event requiring hard work and full commitment.

Principal SIOHS Prof Zubair Abbasi told the students about the importance of time and said that the past time cannot be returned, so utilize it in better ways, also focus on acquiring skills. He noted that patients have become smart, they choose the best doctors for their treatment, so one have to be among them.

JSMU awards degrees to over 630 graduates

  • 40 medals were awarded to the best graduates and position holders of batch 2020 and 2021.

  • Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori urged students to respect their parents and teachers.

KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) held its 4th convocation at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Ground on Sunday to award degrees to over 630 successful graduates.

Forty medals were awarded to the best graduates and position holders of batch 2020 and 2021, out of which female students secured 24 medals. Saif Aslam Khan, a BDS student, received four medals for his exceptional performance.

Former Senior Director Medical and Health Services KMC Dr. Birbal Genani and his daughter Sapna Kumari received degrees simultaneously in the convocation.

On this occasion, Kamran Khan Tessori, the chief guest of the Convocation, addressed the students and asked them to respect and take good care of their parents and teachers who made them able to get this degree.

“There is a lot of talent in Pakistan and Pakistani youth are making the country proud all over the world”, he added.

Governor Sindh asked young people to consider Pakistan as their home and decorate it like their drawing room.

Minister Universities and Boards Ismail Rahu awarded degrees to graduates. In his speech, he asked the graduates to be true to their motherland and serve humanity with passion. He stressed on the importance Sindh Government attached to the education sector and pledged his support for educational projects in the province.

Speaking at the convocation, JSMU Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon shed light on the milestones the university has achieved in recent years and shared that the JSMU is at the forefront of public universities having been declared the best among the medical universities of Sindh in the UK’s Times Higher Education Impact Ranking for 2022. “JSMU is working on sustainable strategies and programmes to provide modern and relevant health education in the province of Sindh,” the Vice Chancellor said.

He also shared his vision for the establishment of Jinnah Sindh Medical City and further briefed about the various projects that JSMU is currently working on, including the establishment of a boys’ medical college, the School of Nursing, the acquisition of SESSI’s Valika hospital in Landhi, the establishment of the College of Physical Therapy, and collaboration with Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC).
