ISLAMABAD:  The federal cabinet has rejected the plan to collect Rs 600 billion per year from Power Division.

A meeting of the Federal Cabinet was held under the chairmanship of the Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq in which the recommendation not to issue and renew identity cards and passports of electricity defaulters was rejected.

Apart from this, the recommendation to prevent defaulters from going abroad and not opening bank accounts has also been rejected.

In the meeting, the federal cabinet rejected the plan of power division to collect Rs 600 billion annually and said that the plan of power division is like throwing dust in the eyes.

According to the sources, the caretaker prime minister expressed concern over the plan and directed the Power Division to present a comprehensive plan with clear targets.

Cabinet members said that the armed forces and bureaucrats have more important work to do than the power sector, setting up a performance management unit would lead to legal and political difficulties.

Inquiry Committee formed to probe DISCOs overbilling scandal

ISLAMABAD:  The power division constituted a four-member inquiry committee to probe the controversial power theft drive of the power distribution companies (DISCOs) defrauding of billions of rupees through overbilling.

The notification for the formation of the committee has been issued by the Power Division.

According to the notification, former Secretary of Power Division Irfan Ali will head the committee. Terms of Reference (TORs) of the committee were also issued by the Power Division.

The committee will review the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority(NEPRA) report based on DISCOS and PITC data. The sampling procedure for the NEPRA investigation will also be reviewed, and the issue of billing to electricity consumers for more than one month, the officers of the electricity companies and NEPRA’s investigation team will also be questioned.

The committee will formulate its recommendations within 15 days.
