BEIJING: Over 215 million Chinese people aged 60 and above have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines. Out of that number, 206 million have completed their vaccination against the virus, a health official said Tuesday.

Voluntary vaccination among the elderly has been progressing steadily across the country, said Cui Gang, an official with the National Health Commission (NHC), at a press conference.

According to the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics last May, the population of Chinese people on the mainland aged 60 and above reached 264.02 million.

Another NHC official Zheng Zhongwei pointed out that the COVID-19 vaccination rates among people aged above 70 and 80 remained low in some regions. Zheng said more work should be done to expedite vaccination for those in these age groups.

Japan barred all foreign arrivals amid concern about new virus strain

Japan barred foreign arrivals

Japan, due to increasing tensions amidst the pandemic, will ban entry from all countries effective from Monday to prevent the spread of the more contagious UK strain of the coronavirus.

The ban will effect from Monday until the end of January. Only Japanese nationals and foreigners living in Japan will be permitted to return to the country.

The government said it decided to take the measure as the variant of the virus is spreading in several countries.

However, Tokyo has reported 949 new coronavirus cases on Saturday as authorities urged residents to stay home.

According to officials, two more people in Japan had been confirmed as infected with the new virus strain, bringing the total so far to seven.

The two latest patients are a pilot in his 30s who returned to Japan from Britain on Dec 16 and a woman in her 20s, one of his family members, with no history of visiting the country, the health ministry said.

According to the ministry, three people had close contact with the pair and one of them tested negative, while the status of the other two is unknown.

Confirmed Cases, Death Toll in Japan

Japan confirmed 3,881 coronavirus cases nationwide on Saturday, also a record daily tally for the fourth straight day, and 46 deaths as Tokyo and several other prefectures reported the highest numbers of infections at the start of the year-end holidays.

Facebook deletes 7mn posts which promoted fake COVID-19 prevention

Facebook deleted fake content

Facebook on Tuesday removed 7 million posts in the second quarter for sharing false information about the novel coronavirus, including content that promoted fake preventative measures.

Facebook released the data as part of its sixth Community Standards Enforcement Report, which it introduced in 2018 along with more stringent decorum rules in response to a backlash over its lax approach to policing content on its platforms.

The social media giant said it would invite external experts to independently audit the metrics used in the report, beginning in 2021.

The world’s biggest social media company removed about 22.5 million posts containing hate speech on its flagship app in the second quarter, up from 9.6 million in the first quarter.

It also deleted 8.7 million posts connected to extremist organizations, compared with 6.3 million in the prior period.

Facebook said it relied more heavily on automation technology for reviewing content during the months of April, May and June.

That resulted in the company taking action on fewer pieces of content related to suicide and self-injury, child nudity and sexual exploitation on its platforms, Facebook said in a post.

The company said it was expanding its hate speech policy to include content depicting blackface, or stereotypes about Jewish people controlling the world.
