Popular photo-sharing application Instagram has announced a set of new features to help protect people from abuse on the app. The company has added the ability to limit comments and DM requests during spikes of increased attention.

Instagram will also now issue stronger warnings when people try to post potentially offensive comments. The app has also added a new Hidden Words feature.

Users will now see a “Limits” feature, which will automatically hide comments and DM requests from people who don’t follow you, or who only recently followed you. To enable it, just go to your privacy settings.

The app already offers a feature called Hidden Words, which allows you to automatically filter offensive words, phrases and emojis into a Hidden folder, that you never have to open if you don’t want to.

“Of these about 50% of the times the comment was edited or deleted by the user based on these warnings,” Instagram said.

Earlier, the company had launched a new tool to prohibit adults from sending Direct-Messages (DMs) to kids who do not follow them.

Instagram aimed to introduce ‘safety prompts’ for kids who don’t follow adults sending messages to them.

An option focusing on the “safety” of users will appear to teens when they DM adults who have been “exhibiting potentially suspicious behaviour.”

Several notices will appear whenever a suspicious user is spotted texting the teenagers.

A screenshot by a Twitter user showed that Instagram is working on its new Audio Rooms feature. The snap showed a new Microphone option popping at the top of the app.

The other screenshot showed that a user could easily mute or unmute and go exit from the Audio Rooms as the Microphone icon appears with a cross symbol.

  4. Now whenever you want to send a quick reply, simply use the shortcut instead of typing the complete phrase.

Instagram inquired by EU over handling of children’s personal data

Globally popular photo and video sharing platform Instagram is being investigated by Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) over its handling of children’s personal data.

The app’s owner Facebook might face a large fine if Instagram found to have broken privacy laws.

According to the complaints, Instagram made contact information on business accounts publicly visible to anyone accessing the app.

A number of US tech giants have their European headquarters in Ireland which came into force in 2018.

However, the DPC is the lead European Union regulator under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The DPC is responsible for protecting individuals’ right to online privacy, and has the power to issue large fines.

Furthermore, the Irish regulator currently investigating whether Facebook has a legal basis for processing children’s personal data.

Separately, it is also looking at whether Facebook has adhered with GDPR requirements in relation to Instagram’s profile and account settings.

It also inquires whether Facebook is adequately protecting the data protection rights of children as vulnerable persons.

Also, the minimum age for having an Instagram account is 13.

iOS 14 update shows Instagram app using camera when not taking photos

An early version of Apple’s major iPhone software update, iOS 14, have been seeing an unexpected notification that Instagram is accessing their camera even when they’re not taking photos.

The iOS 14 update shows a green dot at the top of users’ screens when an app is accessing the camera or microphone. One person noted on Twitter that the notification appeared while they were scrolling their Instagram feed without any camera open.

A spokesperson for Facebook said in a statement that the notifications were caused by a bug which is being fixed by the company.

The spokesperson also said that just because people saw the notification doesn’t mean Instagram was actually accessing their camera.

“We only access your camera when you tell us to – for example when you swipe from Feed to Camera. We found and are fixing a bug in iOS 14 Beta that mistakenly indicates that some people are using the camera when they aren’t. We do not access your camera in those instances, and no content is recorded,” the spokesperson said.
