watchOS 8 Brings Amazing Health, Workout Type Features to Apple Watch

watchOS 8 new health features

Apple has announced watchOS 8, which brings new Portraits to watch face, a new Mindfulness app, a sleeping respiratory rate tracker, new workout types and more. It is available to developers and will be made available to the general public this fall.

The new watchOS 8 brings redesigned Home app, which offers a better way to access accessories and scenes needed in a particular moment, and the ability to control accessories by room. Users can now also quickly broadcast a message throughout the home or to individual rooms via HomePod, HomePod mini, or other personal devices.

“Apple Watch is the most loved watch in the world, keeping users healthy, active, and connected,” said Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice president of Technology. “With watchOS 8, we’re bringing more convenient access to places users to live, work, and visit with significant updates to Home and Wallet, expanding support for both physical and mental well-being, and enabling richer personal connections with the new Portraits face and updates to Messages.”

1. More Access with Wallet

With Apple Watch, it is incredibly convenient to use Apple Pay and Wallet to make secure, contactless payments in stores or ride transit. With watchOS 8, Wallet brings even more powerful contact-free ways for users to access the places and things they care about seamlessly, safely, and securely.

First announced at WWDC in 2020, Ultra-Wideband support now arrives for digital car keys on Apple Watch Series 6. Apple Watch wearers can securely unlock their car from a distance and start it from the driver’s seat.1 This fall, users can also add keys for their home, office, and hotel to Wallet, and tap their Apple Watch to unlock.2 Later this year, beginning with participating states in the US, users will be able to add their driver’s license or state ID to Wallet. Select TSA checkpoints will be the first place users can begin using their digital ID.

2. Redesigned Home App

The redesigned Home app in watchOS 8 offers more convenient access to accessories and scenes needed in a particular moment, and the ability to control accessories by room. Users with a HomeKit-enabled camera can view who is at the door directly on their wrist. Apple Watch users can also tap Intercom to quickly broadcast a message throughout the home or to individual rooms via HomePod, HomePod mini, or other personal devices.

“Tim and Malala have been friends for a little while now, and it’s wonderful to witness this meeting of minds. They discuss everything from personal passions to effecting social change, to the shows Malala has been binge-watching in the enforced downtime, and her announcement of a multi-year production deal with @AppleTV+,” wrote the publication on the video-and-photo sharing platform.

“My understanding of education has been that yes, we have seen progress over the past 20 years, it has been steady and slow progress. However, things have changed drastically because of COVID,” Malala said.

“All these girls are pushed into early [and] child marriages and many of these girls may never be able to return to school. So the challenge ahead is to ensure that education is inclusive, that we bring in policies that are inclusive — that take girls into account,” said further concluded

Apple reverses move for WordPress to add in-app payments

Apple own search engine

Apple reversed course on a decision to force popular blogging platform WordPress to add in-app purchases to its app.

This move by Apple aims to lessen tensions between Apple and developers amid a public battle with Epic Games.

On Friday, WordPress said that Apple had informed it that it had 30 days to add in-app-purchases to its application, which would have given Apple a 30% cut of purchases of WordPress.com plans purchased via the app.

Apple’s request was questioned by developers online as the WordPress app previously didn’t offer a way to purchase plans inside their app, rather just on its website.

“We believe the issue with the WordPress app has been resolved,” an Apple spokesman said in a statement.

“Since the developer removed the display of their service payment options from the app, it is now a free stand-alone app and does not have to offer in-app purchases. We have informed the developer and apologize for any confusion that we have caused.”

The move was earlier seen by some as Apple forcing a developer to add purchases inside of its app in order to give the company a share of revenue that was not previously taken in by the app’s developers.

The App Store makes up a sizable portion of Apple’s $50 billion per year services business.

However, the tech giant says that WordPress submitted an update to the app that would have allowed customers to buy upgraded plans in the app, not via in-app-purchases.

WordPress previously advertised its plans in the app, without offering a way to purchase them directly.

“We will continue to be responsive and do our best to be within both the spirit and letter of the app store rules, including closing any webview loopholes that pop up”, WordPress’ founder, said in a tweet.

The latest decision on WordPress could calm tensions with developers, some of which have sided with Epic Games in a battle over the fees Apple charges developers.

Epic Games unilaterally decided to avert Apple’s payment structure, leading Apple to remove its Fortnite game from the App Store and threaten to revoke its developer account.

Apple added that it reviews 100,000 apps per week and intends to help developers keep their apps on the App Store. The iPhone maker said WordPress no longer violates the rule as it will no longer advertise the plans.

iOS 14 update shows Instagram app using camera when not taking photos

Instagram iOS update

An early version of Apple’s major iPhone software update, iOS 14, have been seeing an unexpected notification that Instagram is accessing their camera even when they’re not taking photos.

The iOS 14 update shows a green dot at the top of users’ screens when an app is accessing the camera or microphone. One person noted on Twitter that the notification appeared while they were scrolling their Instagram feed without any camera open.

A spokesperson for Facebook said in a statement that the notifications were caused by a bug which is being fixed by the company.

The spokesperson also said that just because people saw the notification doesn’t mean Instagram was actually accessing their camera.

“We only access your camera when you tell us to – for example when you swipe from Feed to Camera. We found and are fixing a bug in iOS 14 Beta that mistakenly indicates that some people are using the camera when they aren’t. We do not access your camera in those instances, and no content is recorded,” the spokesperson said.
