LAHORE: The Lahore High Court(LHC) ordered the re-sealing of 84 factories that were desealed in violation of the court order and also indicated action against the responsible officers.

Justice Shahid Karim of Lahore High Court heard the petitions filed for the remediation of smog and environmental pollution.

The LDA lawyer said that 84 factories were sealed on the court order, which has been de-sealed by the Environment Tribunal. The officials responsible for burning crop residue in the Nankana Sahab district have been suspended.

The Lahore High Court has asked for the names of the officers who de-sealed the smoke-emitting factories and kilns.  The court ordered that all the de-sealed factories be re-sealed and showed the order of the Environment Tribunal, and how the tribunal de-sealed the factories. The names of the officers de-sealed should be given.

The court said that action would be taken against all of them under the PEDA Act, if any officer obeys the order of anyone other than this court, then he will be suspended, if something is sealed by a court order, then it will be not be de-sealed by another order.

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered authorities concerned to seal the factories causing pollution under the remedying smog initiative in the province.

Justice Shahid Karim heard the petition filed by citizen Haroon Farooq for remedying smog in the Lahore High Court, during which Commissioner Lahore Division Muhammad Ali Randhawa appeared before the court.

Commissioner Lahore told the court that action will be taken indiscriminately against smog-emitting vehicles and we have also directed the traffic police to stop smog-emitting vehicles.

The commissioner told the court “We have taken many steps for the trend of cycling, have talked to the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency to make a track for cycling, will try to get things for cyclists at a discount in hotels and we will now advertise in the newspaper that cutting trees is a crime”.

On this, the court said “Now it seems we are going on the right path, PDMA is sleeping, we are waking them up, if any vehicle is causing smog, take pictures of it, from next year. We have to take big steps in the beginning and these two months are very important”.

The court asked the commissioner to involve the private sector and we can resume cycling in these five to six months.

The court ordered to sealing of the polluting factories and said that the owners of the sealed factories would give an affidavit that if the violation occurs again, the factory will be demolished.

Punjab Govt orders crackdown against vehicles emitting smoke

LAHORE:  To combat smog in Punjab, government departments have been ordered to crack down on factories and vehicles that emit smoke.

These instructions were issued in a meeting chaired by Director General Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Punjab Zaheer Abbas Malik. All directors and district officers of the Environment Department from across the province participated in the meeting.

Zaheer Malik said that factories emitting smoke in Punjab would be sealed and vehicles emitting smoke would not be allowed to enter the cities including Lahore. He said, “Kiln operation without zigzag technology will never be allowed whereas the Chief Minister Punjab has a zero tolerance policy regarding smog and it will be implemented in every possible way.”
