Poliovirus detected in sewerage samples of all four provinces

ISLAMABAD: The poliovirus has been detected in environmental samples collected from all four provinces of Pakistan.

The Regional Reference Laboratory has confirmed the presence of the polio virus in samples collected from 25 districts across the country.

The samples were collected from sewage lines between February 3 and 12, and the results revealed the presence of Wild Poliovirus Type 1 in several districts.

The poliovirus has been detected in environmental samples of 13 districts of  Sindh province, four districts of Punjab, five districts of Balochistan and three districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In Sindh, District Central, East, Keamari, Korangi, and Malir, Hyderabad, Badin, Jacobabad, Jamshoro, Mirpurkhas, Sajawal, Dadu, and Sukkur, were found to have polio-positive sewage.

In Punjab, four districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala, had polio-positive sewage.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, three districts, including Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, and Lakki Marwat, were found to have polio-positive sewage.

Similarly, in Balochistan, five districts, including Quetta, Chaman, Loralai, Noshki, and Zhob, had polio-positive sewage.

ISLAMABAD: Polio virus has been confirmed in the environmental samples of four districts of the country.

According to the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Health, the polio virus was found in the environmental samples of Karachi Keamari, Hyderabad, Chaman, and Peshawar.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Health said that the only way to protect children from the virus and disability is polio vaccination, parents must administer polio drops to children under five years of age during every campaign, and polio virus to children with weak immunity. Instant targets.

ISLAMABAD: Poliovirus has been confirmed in the environmental samples of six more districts of Pakistan.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination, poliovirus was found in four samples from Karachi and two from Chaman, one sample each from Peshawar, Kohat, and Nowshera.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Health said that the polio virus belongs to the YB2A virus cluster in Afghanistan.

Caretaker Federal Minister of Health Dr. Nadeem Jan said that every child is at risk due to the presence of the polio virus and this virus can make children under 5 years of age disabled for life. He said there is no cure for polio and only a vaccine for children provides protection.

Dr. Nadeem Jan appealed to the parents to welcome the polio workers who come to their homes, to give their children polio shots to protect them from life-long disability.

ISLAMABAD: The presence of polio virus was confirmed in the environmental samples collected from eleven districts of the country.

The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health Islamabad has confirmed the detection of Type-1 Wild Poliovirus (WPV1) in 11 environmental (sewage) samples collected in October 2023 (four from Peshawar, three from Quetta Block, two from Karachi and one each from Bannu& Lahore)

The polio virus was found in environmental samples from four different areas of Chaman, Pishin and Quetta in Balochistan. Similarly, virus detected in Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and four in Peshawar.

Polio virus was also found in the environmental samples of Keamari and District Central of Karachi in Sindh and Gulshan e Ravi in ​​Lahore in Punjab.

In Pakistan, polio virus has been confirmed in 54 environmental samples so far, while the fourth case of polio was also reported in Karachi couple of days ago.

On the other hand, Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) is very much concerned over the rise in positive environmental samples for Polio.

According to the reports 11 new environmental polio samples have been detected this month in seven cities . The detection of environmental sample are believed positive, when the polio virus is detected in sewage water.

The Caretaker Health Minister said that Pakistan has the most sensitive polio surveillance system in the world and the confirmation of the virus in the samples shows that this system is working effectively.

Nadeem Jan said that the presence of viruses in the environment is a threat to every child and there is no cure for polio and only vaccines protect children.

He further said, “We have organized many polio campaigns this year, in November, we will give vaccines in the anti-polio campaign in the areas where the virus is present”.
