ILM’s outstanding work in “Andor” VFX featurettes

Andor
  • Andor is a series centred on Diego Luna’s character from the prequel Rogue One.
  • The Rebellion in the series isn’t the structured army.
  • One of the many projects that Lucasfilm has created for Disney+ is Andor.

With Andor, a series centred on Diego Luna’s character from the prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney+ provided one of the most realistic and analytical perspectives on the Empire’s rule over the galaxy last year. The Rebellion in the programme isn’t the structured army we see in the classic Star Wars trilogy, but rather a number of dispersed groups of people seeking to uphold moral principles. Cassian (Luna) must navigate this ethically murky environment. Visual effects supervisor Scott Pritchard talked about how some of the show’s most breathtaking sequences were made in a recent interview with the Befores and Afters magazine.

Pritchard had the following response when questioned about how the studio conveyed its concept for the series to him: “”When I was first told about it, it was all about that it’s not a big visual effects series. It was not going to have big, flashy visual effects. It’s predominantly an environment show, which I thought, brilliant, because I particularly like doing environments, that’s my kind of thing.”

Since the show’s debut, the emphasis has been on the characters rather than the visual spectacle, as evidenced by Maggie Lovitt’s review of the episode for Collider, which touches on the complexity of Andor.

Along with the Pritchard interview, Befores and Afters published a quartet of featurettes showcasing the work of the show’s visual effects crew. The ILM crew reveals how some of the most outlandish features from Andor are brought to life in the videos, whether it’s a K2 series Imperial robot or Mon Mothma’s (Genevieve O’Reily) spacecraft.

Cassian hasn’t joined the Rebel alliance yet in the series. He actually starts his trip by hunting for his sister, who is only ever seen in flashbacks during the whole first season of the show. Until he is discovered by Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgrd), Cassian’s search to find his missing sibling causes him to act irrationally and lose focus. Luthen tries to convince Cassian that if he concentrates his rage and fury on dismantling the army that initially invaded his house and killed his family, he can use them for good.

One of the many projects that Lucasfilm has created for Disney+ is Andor. The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor were the next live action series produced for the platform after The Mandalorian, which just unveiled a new poster for its impending third season. The Cassian show is presently filming its second season, with the majority of the core cast returning in their roles. The second season of the show is slated for release in 2024.
