  • Prince Charles and Camilla attended the Notting Hill Carnival together.
  • The event is a celebration of the Caribbean and Black culture.
  • It Carnival was postponed in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Notting Hill Carnival returns next month after being postponed in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the royal couple attended an event to celebrate it on Wednesday. With a history dating back to 1966, London’s celebration of the Caribbean and Black culture is only eclipsed in size by Rio Carnival in Brazil.

Prince Charles, 73, was seen playing the steel drums and reaching out to shake hands with dancers on stilts after remarking on their height and saying, “I’m not much cop at this,” according to ITV.

In the midst of the UK summer, Camilla, who turns 75 on Sunday, carried a fan.

She said, “If it had been cooler, we could have had a jolly good dance.”

In bright costumes and headdresses, sisters Natalie and Claire Johnson welcomed Prince Charles and Camilla.

Have a look:

“For me, it’s the heritage. I’m just so proud of it and the culture, the representation, the way that we can just be — and be proud — and the party vibe and the community spirit,” she added saying.

The director of the carnival’s board Allyson Williams said, “Everyone is excited about the return of the carnival. Camilla told me she came to Notting Hill Carnival many years ago. I hope they both come back one day.”

WHO warns Covid-19 pandemic ‘nowhere near over’

Covid-19
  • WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says virus is running free.
  • Number of Covid cases reported to WHO has increased 30 percent in the past two weeks.
  • Infections are driven by sub-variants of the Omicron strain and lifting of control measures.

Fresh surges of Covid infections show the pandemic is nowhere near over; WHO’s chief lamented Tuesday, warning that the virus is running free.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was in worry that case numbers were shooting up; putting more strain on health systems and workers.

The number of Covid cases reported to the WHO increased 30 percent in the past two weeks; driven by sub-variants of the Omicron strain and the lifting of control measures.

“New waves of the virus demonstrate again that Covid-19 is nowhere near over. As the virus pushes at us, we must push back,” he insisted.

He told a news conference that as transmission increases, governments must also deploy tried-and-tested measures like mask-wearing and improving ventilation.

“Sub-variants of Omicron, like BA.4 and BA.5, continue to drive waves of cases; hospitalisation and death around the world,” Tedros said.

“Surveillance has reduced significantly — including testing and sequencing — making it increasingly difficult to assess the impact; of variants on transmission, disease characteristics, and the effectiveness of counter-measures.”

Furthermore, tests, treatments and vaccines are not in deployment effectively.

“The virus is running freely and countries are not effectively managing the disease burden based on their capacity;” he said, both in terms of hospitalisation of acute cases and the expanding number of people with Long Covid.

Covid outbreak hits Sri Lanka on eve of Australia Test

Covid

  • Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando all tested positive.
  • Hosts looking to bounce back from crushing 10-wicket defeat in first Test.

A Covid-19 outbreak hit Sri Lanka’s team on the eve of Friday’s second Test against Australia with Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando all testing positive for the virus.

“All three players were found to be positive during a Rapid Antigen Test conducted yesterday,” Sri Lanka Cricket said Thursday.

The hosts are looking to bounce back after their crushing 10-wicket defeat inside three days in the opening Test of the two-match series.

Angelo Mathews has returned to the team after testing positive during the first Test but Praveen Jayawickrama had already been ruled out on Tuesday after testing positive for Covid.

Sri Lanka had already reinforced their spin bowling contingent with the addition of Maheesh Theekshana, Dinuth Wellalage and Prabath Jayasuriya along with all-rounder Lakshita Manasinghe, who bowls off-spin.

Lakshan Sandakan, a left-arm wrist-spinner who last played a Test in 2018, was added Thursday to the squad as further cover.

Sajid Javid thinks Boris Johnson’s problems start with him

Sajid Javid
  • Sajid Javid launched a scathing critique of Boris Johnson in the House of Commons.
  •  He quit as health secretary on Tuesday, precipitating other ministry resignations.
  •  Javid said he had been promised “at the highest level” that there were no parties during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Sajid Javid has launched a devastating critique of Boris Johnson in the House of Commons as he explained why he quit as health secretary, warning that “the problem starts at the top” with the prime minister.

When he resigned on Tuesday evening, Javid precipitated other ministry resignations.

After Wednesday’s prime minister’s questions, the Tory member of parliament stated that he had been promised “at the highest level” that there were no parties in Downing Street during the Covid-19 lockdowns, only to find out afterward that this was false.

More recently, he stated, the administration lacked “truth and honesty” about the crisis involving deputy chief whip Chris Pincher, who has been accused of sexual misconduct.

“Eventually, we must realize that enough is enough. I believe that time has come,” Javid stated.

He stated that the “great democracy” of the United Kingdom was supported by the national interest and the need to retain integrity. “This issue is not abstract. In large democracies, we have witnessed what occurs when divisions are entrenched and not overcome. We cannot for it to occur here,” he stated.

He stated, “I will never risk losing my ethics.” “In my opinion, a team is only as good as its captain, and a captain is only as good as their team, therefore devotion must be reciprocal. Recent events have made it increasingly difficult to be a member of that squad.”

Jasprit Bumrah chosen India’s Captain for fifth Test against England

Jasprit Bumrah
  • India appoint Jasprit Bumrah as their new Test captain.
  • Rohit Sharma ruled out of the fifth Test against England at Edgbaston.
  • Mayank Agarwal has been named as his replacement.

After Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the fifth Test against England at Edgbaston, India appointed Jasprit Bumrah as their captain.

In Edgbaston, Bumrah will captain India for the first time in any kind of international competition. As the first bowler to lead India in Test matches since the legendary Kapil Dev in 1987, he is also poised to make history. Rishabh Pant has been chosen Vice-Captain.

Bumrah commented on being selected captain during the pre-game press conference, saying, “It is a big achievement, big honor. To play Test cricket was my lifelong ambition.”

“That I have been given the opportunity to lead the nation is a significant accomplishment. My career’s biggest accomplishment, in my opinion. I’m overjoyed.”

During the exhibition game against Leicestershire the previous week, Rohit tested positive for Covid-19.

He participated in the first inning despite testing positive, but the second inning was missed because he was placed in isolation.

According to a BCCI release, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma will not play in the rescheduled fifth Test against England, which will begin on Friday.

“On Thursday morning, Rohit took a RAT Test, which revealed a COVID-19 good result. The forthcoming Test will be captained by Jasprit Bumrah, who will be assisted by Rishabh Pant,” according to the All-India Senior Selection Committee.

India will suffer a severe loss as a result of Rohit’s absence. During the initial part of the series last year, Rohit not only played the role of captain but also displayed outstanding form, collecting 368 runs, including a century in the fourth Test.

Mayank Agarwal has been named the replacement for Rohit by India. Agarwal has already left for England and connected with the Test team because there is no quarantine for foreign travellers.

Bumrah, who only made his Test debut in 2018, has already distinguished himself as one of India’s key red-ball players.

Even though he has only played 29 Tests, he is now the pace attack’s leader and is ranked No. 3 in the ICC Test Bowler’s rankings.

In the ODI portion of India’s tour of South Africa, he served as vice-captain as KL Rahul led the team in Rohit’s absence. During the Test and T20I series against Sri Lanka, he served as Rohit’s backup.

India would win their first Test series in England since 2007 if they won or drew in Birmingham. Important ICC World Test Championship points are also at stake, with India now occupying the third-place spot.

Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England’s new captain and coach, have made a significant impact on the team, as proven by their 3-0 triumph against New Zealand, the current ICC World Test Championship champions.

On July 1st, the Test will start in Edgbaston.
