Estonia to expel Russia’s ambassador in retaliation

Estonia
  • Tensions between Russia and its European neighbors have increased.
  • Estonia announced to expel of the Russian ambassador from Tallinn.
  • Russian ambassador will depart at the same time as his Estonian counterpart.

TALLINN: In retaliation for Moscow’s expulsion of the Estonian ambassador, Estonia announced on Monday that it would expel the Russian ambassador from Tallinn.

Since Moscow invaded Ukraine last year, tensions between Russia and its European neighbors have increased.

“We stand by the principle of parity in relations with Russia,” the Estonian ministry of foreign affairs said in a tweet sent in English, adding that the Russian ambassador would have to depart at the same time as his Estonian counterpart, ordered by Moscow to leave on February 7.

In a statement issued on Monday, Russia’s foreign ministry said it had downgraded diplomatic relations with Estonia, accusing the Baltic country of “total Russophobia.”

According to a statement from Moscow, the measures come after Estonia drastically reduced staff levels at Russia’s embassy in Tallinn.

“Russia’s steps will not deter us from providing continued support to Ukraine,” Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said in a tweet following a tit-for-tat response from Tallin.

India: Moscow to Goa flight diverted due to bomb threat

Moscow
  • S.V.T. Dhanamjaya Rao said that they received an email about the bomb threat.
  • The plane was immediately diverted to Uzbekistan.
  • The plane had 238 passengers on board, including two infants and seven crew members.

Panaji: An Azur Air Moscow-Goa flight was diverted to Uzbekistan on Saturday after receiving a bomb threat via email, the Russian airline’s second such incident this month, officials here confirmed.

S.V.T. Dhanamjaya Rao, director of the Dabolim Airport in South Goa, said the flight was scheduled to land at 4.38 a.m. in the coastal state.

“We received an email about the bomb threat, and we quickly contacted the airlines,” Rao said.

“The plane was diverted to Uzbekistan and landed there,” Rao explained.

According to airport sources, local police were also notified of the bomb threat mail. Azur Air, a Russian charter airline that serves destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Central America, had 238 passengers on board, including two infants and seven crew members.

According to airport sources, the flight departed from Perm international airport, which is located at Bolshoye Savino, 16 kilometers southwest of Perm, Russia.

Police officers were deployed at the airport immediately after the news circulated.

This comes nearly two weeks after a Moscow-to-Goa flight made an emergency landing at Gujarat’s Jamnagar airport following a bomb threat.

The Moscow-Goa Azur Air flight ZF2401 also received a bomb threat on January 9 and made an emergency landing at the Jamnagar airport in Gujarat.

The plane landed in Goa the next day after a thorough inspection.

Missile systems seen on Moscow rooftops draw no response from the Kremlin

Kremlin
  • Kremlin has declined to confirm whether Russia is preparing to defend itself or not.
  • An air defence system called Pantsir-S1 is made to defend against a range of weapons.
  • Something that appeared to be an anti-aircraft weapon could be seen atop the ministry building.

The Kremlin has declined to confirm whether Russia is preparing to defend itself against potential attacks in the wake of social media posts showing missile defence systems installed on a number of Moscow rooftops.

Social media posts appeared to show a Pantsir-S1 mobile anti-aircraft system on the roof of a structure in central Moscow that is located about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of the Kremlin, as well as a Pantsir on the roof of the Ministry of Defense building that is situated along the Moscow River and next to Gorky Park.

On Friday, something that appeared to be an anti-aircraft weapon could be seen atop the capital’s main ministry building.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, referred inquiries about whether Russia was concerned that Moscow might be a target, to the defence ministry on Friday.

“It is better to ask the defense ministry about all measures that are taken because they are responsible for ensuring the security of the country in general and the capital in particular,” Peskov told reporters.

A request for comment from the reporters was not immediately met with a response from the ministry.

An air defence system called Pantsir-S1 is made to defend against a range of weapons, such as aircraft and ballistic and cruise missiles.

Another Pantsir system was reportedly installed about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from President Vladimir Putin’s home in Novo-Ogaryovo outside of Moscow, according to independent Russian-language media.

Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko shared a video

The interior minister of Ukraine‘s advisor, Anton Gerashchenko, shared a video on social media that appeared to show the anti-aircraft near Putin’s home.

“What is going on, one wonders?” Gerashchenko wrote.

S-400 mobile surface-to-air missile units were reportedly spotted at an agricultural institute in the capital as well as close to the expansive Losiny Ostrov forest park on Moscow’s northern border, according to reports from earlier in the week.

On Twitter, security analyst Michael Horowitz suggested a few potential explanations: The Kremlin leadership may be worried about the threat of a coup, which he acknowledged was a “wild guess,” or Russia may be worried about “Ukrainian attacks against Moscow,” the Russian leadership may be trying to play up the threat of Ukrainian attacks.

Moscow has claimed that Ukrainian forces are responsible for drone assaults on military facilities located far inside Russian territory.

Despite sending Ukraine military aid worth billions of dollars from the US and other NATO members, US President Joe Biden has stated that Washington will not send any equipment that could be used in attacks inside of Russia.

However, Kremlin spokesman Peskov raised the possibility of such weapons being provided in the future on Thursday, saying it would “bring the conflict to a whole new level.”

Kazakhstan no longer allows Russians to stay indefinitely

Kazakhstan
  • Kazakhstan would no longer permit Russian nationals to enter.
  • The measure was suggested by the Interior Ministry.
  • Russian emigrated to Kazakhstan last year.

A government decree released this week states that Kazakhstan would no longer permit Russian nationals to enter the Central Asian nation indefinitely by performing so-called visa runs every three months.

From January 26, the Astana government will forbid the practice, requiring Russians and citizens of other post-Soviet bloc nations to depart the country for at least 90 days following the allowed three-month stay.

The measure was suggested by the Interior Ministry, which said it would provide the government with more control over immigration.

Tens of thousands of Russians, largely young and middle-aged males, emigrated to Kazakhstan last year when Moscow began its first conscription drive since World War Two due to its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

Given that Kazakhstan and Russia have the world’s longest continuous land border and that Russian is a widely spoken language there, Russians avoiding the draught frequently choose Kazakhstan.

The ability to stay in the country de facto indefinitely – by leaving it and reentering every 90 days – has been another important factor.

However, the nation has had a difficult time adjusting to the inflow of Russians. Authorities in Kazakhstan claim that the exceptionally huge inflows were a factor in the country’s record-high inflation rate of more than 20% last year.

The conflict in Ukraine has also strained relations between Moscow and Astana since the latter has sided with peace advocates rather than its former Soviet master.

Russia: Surviving Yakutsk, the world’s coldest city

Yakutsk
  • Mercury dropped to minus 50 degrees Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit).
  • Located 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) east of Moscow.
  • Residents regularly watch the thermometer plummet well below minus 40.

Yakutsk: Temperatures in the Siberian city considered as the lowest on the planet have dropped to minus 50 degrees Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit) this week due to an unusually long cold spell.

Located 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) east of Moscow on the permafrost of Russia’s Far East, residents of the mining city regularly watch the thermometer plummet well below minus 40.

“You can’t fight it. You either adjust and dress accordingly or you suffer,” said Anastasia Gruzdeva, outside in two scarves, two pairs of gloves, and multiple hats and hoods.

“In the city, you don’t really feel the cold. Or maybe it’s just your brain preparing you for it and telling you everything is OK “In the metropolis enveloped in freezing mist, she said.

Another resident, Nurgusun Starostina, who sells frozen seafood in a market without a fridge or freezer, said there were no unique tricks to dealing with the cold.

Yakutsk experiences winter from October to April. The approach of spring is cause for happiness, but it also brings its own set of problems: the melting of all the ice and snow can result in serious flooding. A brief summer—roughly July—brings a little relief, with temperatures reaching the 90s. Then it’s time to get ready for another seven-month winter.
