Man finds Facebook ‘spying’ creepy by showing ads for items he discussed

Facebook

When a few advertisements for topics he had just been discussing appeared in a Facebook user’s newsfeed, he became uneasy.

One evening, a 40-year-old guy who wished to remain anonymous was talking in-depth on his mobile phone to his grandmother about how to remove a tree stump from her lawn.

The journalist then noticed an odd Amazon advertisement for a large “copper tree stump killer” nail appear on his Facebook feed the next morning.

He had never looked up anything related to tree stumps on his phone or computer before or after the talk, nor had he “liked” or commented on the topic anywhere, let alone looked up how to get rid of them.

  • The new version supports Dolby Vision, HDR, and 4K Ultra HD content.
  • Users can easily connect to Bluetooth hearing aids.

At its autumn event last night, Amazon unveiled a number of new products, including the Kindle Scribe, Echo Auto, Alexa Voice Remote Pro, and the Halo Rise bedside smart lamp.

The e-commerce behemoth also unveiled the fifth-generation Echo Dot, Echo Studio, and Fire TV Cube smart speakers.

Only the Fire TV Cube (3rd generation) and the Alexa Voice Remote Pro have been introduced by Amazon for the Indian market.

Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) Specs

The successor to the model from the previous year, the Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd generation), comes with a number of enhancements.

It is a streaming box with a square design that includes capabilities from both the Fire Stick TV and the Echo line of Alexa-enabled smart speakers.

With four physical buttons on the top and a distinctive Blue color flash when it is turned on, the third generation product has the same appearance as its predecessor.

The third generation of the Amazon Fire TV Cube supports Dolby Vision, HDR, and 4K Ultra HD content.

It has a technology called Super Resolution Upscaling, which upscales HD video to 4K using technical gimmicks, enhancing the display’s clarity, contrast, and detail.

The Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd generation) is powered by a new 2.0GHz processor that is said to be 20% more powerful than the one it replaces.

It will provide quicker app launch times, resulting in a fluid and seamless streaming media player experience.

Along with a LAN port, the third-generation streaming device has WiFi-6 connectivity.

Additionally, it has an HDMI input connector that enables users to immediately connect to other devices like soundbars and compatible set-top boxes, among others.

Additionally, there is a second USB connector for connecting compatible webcams with ease.

Users can easily connect to Bluetooth hearing aids that are compatible with the Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd generation) thanks to its support for Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA).

The streaming device includes built-in speakers, a microphone, and a hands-free Alexa feature that enables voice commands to operate other devices.

Alexa Voice Remote Pro Specs

For its Fire TV devices, Amazon offers a separate remote called the Alexa Voice Remote Pro. The device has a similar appearance to other Fire TV Stick remote controls but has several functionalities.

By telling Alexa to find my remote, a Remote Finder exists that makes it simple for users to locate lost remote controls.

To create a one-touch shortcut to favorite applications, channels, and whatever Alexa can do, the gadget features two additional configurable buttons.

Additionally, the Alexa Voice Remote Pro has motion-activated backlit buttons that turn on when a user picks it up in a room that is dark.

Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), Alexa Voice Remote Pro Pricing

The cost of the third-generation Amazon Fire TV Cube is INR 13,999. The price of the Alexa Voice Remote Pro is INR 2,499

While the latter is already open for pre-order on Amazon, the former will soon be available for purchase.

Amazon, Google criticize Microsoft’s cloud modifications

Microsoft's cloud modifications
  • Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) recent improvements to cloud computing have been attacked by Amazon and Google.
  • The companies claim that they hinder competition and deter users from transferring.
  • Microsoft’s action comes after smaller European Union rivals complained to EU antitrust officials about its cloud service policies.

Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) recent improvements to cloud computing have been attacked by Amazon (AMZN.O) and Google, a unit of Alphabet (GOOGL.O), who claim that they hinder competition and deter users from transferring to competing cloud service providers.

On Monday, the US software behemoth revealed new licensing agreements and other adjustments that will go into effect on October 1 and, according to the company, will make it simpler for cloud service providers to compete.

The transactions will not include Microsoft’s own cloud services, Amazon, Google, Alibaba (9988. HK), or any other cloud provider.

Microsoft’s action came after smaller European Union rivals complained to EU antitrust officials about its cloud service policies.

The regulators then questioned market participants on the matter and the effects they have seen.

Amazon was harsh in its criticisms, trailing just Microsoft and Google as the top cloud service providers.

Instead of listening to its customers and restoring fair software licensing in the cloud for everyone, Microsoft is now doubling-down on the same harmful practices by implementing even more restrictions in an unfair attempt to limit the competition it faces, a spokesperson for its cloud service unit AWS said in an email.

Marcus Jadotte, Google’s vice president for policy and government affairs, had a similar critique.

In a tweet, he stated that “the promise of the cloud is flexible, elastic computing without contractual lock-ins.”

Customers ought to be free to switch between platforms and select the technology that best suits their needs rather than Microsoft’s, according to Jadotte.

Amazon set to acquire Roomba maker for $1.7 bn

Amazon set to acquire Roomba maker
  • iRobot is the company behind the Roomba household robot vacuum.
  • iRobot stock soared by around 20% in pre-market trade on Friday.
  • The deal is Amazon’s second billion-dollar acquisition in as many weeks after buying One Medical.

The two firms announced on Friday that Amazon (AMZN) had reached an agreement to acquire iRobot, the company behind the well-known Roomba vacuum, in an all-cash deal valued at around $1.7 billion, including debt.

The agreement, which is still subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, has the potential to broaden Amazon’s selection of robotics and strengthen its position in consumers’ homes.

Astro is a household robot that Amazon unveiled last year. The 20-pound, $999 robot that resembles a dog zips around the house recording live video as it learns your routines.

Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon Devices, noted that the iRobot team has “shown over many years its ability to change how people clean with devices that are incredibly practical and imaginative.”

“I’m eager to collaborate with the iRobot team to develop ideas that will improve the quality of life for customers.”

Following the 2002 release of the original Roomba, iRobot went on to create other iterations of robot vacuums, mops, and air purifiers that will now be included in Amazon’s product line.

According to Neil Saunders, Managing Director of GlobalData, a data analytics and consultancy company, the acquisition of Amazon “represents a further incursion into the field of home automation.”

He said, “It is simple to envision how Amazon would integrate items like Roomba into the Alexa and Prime ecosystems so that users have one single point of monitoring and control for numerous duties and activities.”

The agreement marks Amazon’s second significant billion-dollar acquisition in as many weeks.

A deal to buy primary healthcare company One Medical from the e-commerce behemoth for an estimated $3.9 billion in cash was finalized last month.

Following the announcement, iRobot stock soared by around 20% in pre-market trade on Friday.

Electric truck maker Rivian cuts 6% of its employees

Rivian cuts employees
  • Rivian to slash over 800 employees.
  • CEO RJ Scaringe cited concerns such as inflation, increasing interest rates, and rising commodity prices for the decision.
  • The company gave departing workers 14 weeks of normal pay.

According to an email issued by CEO RJ Scaringe to Rivian’s about 14,000 employees, the company, which is financed by Amazon, is cutting off about 6 percent of its workforce as it adapts to how the “world has significantly changed.”

On Wednesday, the business informed about 840 of those workers that they would be leaving.

Scaringe cited concerns such as inflation, increasing interest rates, and rising commodity prices for the startup automaker’s decision to reduce its staff.

Rivian’s three original models, the R1T truck, the R1S luxury SUV, and an electric delivery van for which Amazon, a significant Rivian investor, is the main customer, have only recently begun production.

The R1T pickup and R1S SUV have garnered favorable reviews from critics, and the truck was named Truck of the Year by MotorTrend.

The firm has seen some difficulties ramping up its manufacturing, with Scaringe citing supply chain concerns and the competitive labour market in particular as difficulties.

Although Rivian presently produces its electric vehicles in a former Mitsubishi facility in Normal, Illinois, the manufacturer is already preparing to build a second facility close to Atlanta.

Up to 7,500 workers could potentially be employed by the Georgia business.

Our purpose is more vital than ever, and we are in a strong financial position, but in order to reach our full potential, our strategy must support our steady growth as we move closer to profitability.

Scaringe announced the layoffs in an email to the staff.

The company, which is based in Irvine, California, gave departing workers 14 weeks of normal pay and continued healthcare coverage until the end of the year.
